Family vacations are the best part of the year. To spend time surrounded by the closest and most loved people in your life is something that can not be compared to any other experience. When there are kids in the family things can get a little tough. There is much to be planned and predicted and still the unexpected situations can not be fully avoided.

Children have special needs and expectations, and they have to be at least partly satisfied otherwise the vacation can turn into torture for everybody present. What can be interesting for you will probably be no big deal for the little ones and the opposite – children enjoy things in which you see no sense.

travel-from-toRome – the capital of Italy – is one great destination for visiting. There is almost no one in Europe and in the world that will not love to see this old and beautiful city. And the best part of the offer is that is as interesting for the children as it is for you with its numerous ruins and long stories about the past battles.

The Coliseum should be the first place to start with. It is one major monument, significant part of which is kept till today. Being one of the major buildings in the ancient Rome, it is still keeping the central position in the modern life of the capital. The Coliseum is situated in the heart of the city on the right bank of the river, crossing it, which is Tiber. This is good because you will not wander too much until you find it. It is almost fifty meters high so it is easily seen from most parts of the city. The children will love to jump in the wholes, where were the old corridors of the Coliseum or up and down the tribunes, forming very good for playing stairs.

The next stop can be the Fountain di Trevi – one unique piece of architecture. It is situated in the center of the city as well and is considered to be one of the most romantic places in the planet. It may bring you back to the memories of the beginning of your life as family and wake-up sweet memories for great moments in your life. It is interesting with the combination of details and ornaments in its architecture. The original time of its building is going back to the Baroque times.

Saint Peter’s Square – the republic in the republic – this in one part of Rome which will leave both you and your children with wide open eyes and mouth. On the way to the incredible Vatican you can do some shopping or stop at the numerous restaurants and bars for a rest. The city of the Pope inside will offer many nice spots for observing like the statues of the saints, with you will see wherever you look. St. Patrick’s Basilica is one point of interest inside the square which deserves special attention. Leave some time to visit the Vatican museum, which is situated just adjacent to the Basilica.

Last children can see the ruins of the Roman forum. It is close to the Coliseum and the complex of the forum consists of several smaller and bigger monuments. Former center of the political life of the city, today this is a venue for long walks, observation and endless games for the kids, who can run up and down and hide in the numerous places, which will seem good for this purpose.

Caught in the headlights of so many architectural wonders, visitors to Italy’s capital city often overlook the secret side of the Eternal City.  But if you’ve had enough of the Colosseum, St. Peter’s, and the Trevi Fountain, we’ve found some lesser-known attractions that show you a completely different Rome.

The Keyhole of the Priorato di Malta

A keyhole might not sound terribly interesting, but the one in the arch-headed central portone of the Villa of the Priorato di Malta in Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta is well worth a look.  Peer through it and you’ll get a perfectly framed view of the dome of San Pietro, an effect seemingly intended by the architect, Piranesi.

Centrale Montemartini

If you like your culture uncrowded, Rome can be a difficult place to be.  Not if you visit the Centrale Montemartini, however.  Here, you can wander around, unimpeded by camera-toting tourists in an ingenious exhibition space in the former Giovanni Montemartini Thermoelectric Centre, a remarkable example of industrial archaeology converted into a museum.  Closed Mondays.

The Porta Portese Market

The Porta Portese, near the end of Viale Trastevere, is a classic Roman flea market where you can pick up bargains in everything from jewellery to pottery, and kitchen implements to bicycles.  The market takes place every Sunday from 6.30 a.m., but you’ll have to get there early to snap up the best deals.

Villa Doria Pamphili

It is one of life’s unsolved mysteries why tour groups do not flock to the Villa Doria Pamphili, but it is fortunate for us that they don’t because this delightful oasis in the Monteverde quarter of Rome is largely overlooked.  Stroll freely through Its French-styled garden (the largest landscaped public park in the city) among sparkling fountains and quirky statues and admire the enormous 17th-century villa.

Chiesa di Dio Padre Misericordioso

Even the biggest fan of religious buildings could suffer church fatigue in Rome, as it’s impossible to go far without stumbling into yet another flamboyantly ornate place of worship.  The Chiesa di Dio Padre Misericordioso is not your ordinary church, though.  Situated on Piazza Largo Terzo Millennio, it features three massive sail-like arches and a whimsical bell tower that certainly do not fit the usual ecclesiastical stereotype.  Visit at sunset, when the light floods the massive windows of this unforgettable landmark.

Municipal Rose Gardens

If you’re in Rome during May and June, and you’re struck by an incredible perfume emanating from Viale del Circo Massimo, you’ve found Rome’s Municipal Rose Garden (Roseto Comunale di Roma).  Home to more than 1,000 varieties from over 20 different countries, the Rose Garden makes a comforting stop after a visit to the historically brutal Coliseum nearby.  Look out for the the green-petaled Chinensis Virdiflora and the stinky Rosa Foetida.

Porta di Roma Shopping Center

One of Europe’s biggest shopping malls, the Porta di Roma is a 150,000-square-meter retail heaven off the GRA, the road that rings Rome.  Car hire is a good option for anyone considering a visit to this centre, which features more than 200 shops, numerous restaurants, four tennis courts, two football pitches, and an indoor gym with a swimming pool.  And you can save your feet for the Ancient City:  The mall is furnished with a series of moving sidewalks, escalators, and upholstered seating.

Ristorante-Caffe’ Lo Zodiaco

For one of the best views you’ll get of historic Rome, it’s hard to beat this charming cafe on Viale del Parco Mellini.  High above the city, it offers panoramic views but is a little off the tourist track.  It is particularly romantic in the evening, when meals are served by candlelight beneath the enormous windows that frame the cityscape.

Villa d’Este

If you weren’t convinced already, a visit to the Eternal City  illustrates just how comfortable the life of a Roman Catholic clergyman could be.  Villa d’Este is a testament to the the power and opulence enjoyed by the Church’s upper echelons.  Built in the 16th century on the order of Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este, this palatial estate encompasses some of Europe’s loveliest gardens in Europe and exemplifies Renaissance culture at its grandest.

Join the evening passeggiata

Masters of style, the Italians have turned their dinner amble into the premier social event of the day.  During the evening passeggiata (“little walk”) between 5 and 7pm, crowds parade the city streets to be seen fare la bella figura, (“cutting a beautiful figure”).  You may not feel suitably attired to take part, but you can always watch.  Via del Corso is passegiata central, but every locality has its own minor version.

Spring is the best time to visit this beautiful city. The spring season continues from March through May. Another time, that is suitably appropriate for the visit is the fall season when the weather is perfect for exploring the city at leisure. Since summers are comparatively hot and humid, visitors mostly avoid these two seasons for their travel. This time, the city is full of tourist crowd, and it is difficult to get hold of preferred seats and preferred rooms in a hotel. Winters, on the other hand, are quite chilly, and it becomes difficult to venture out. Most of the time, tourists have to stay cooped up in their hotel rooms and the excitement of the vacation wanes. Although, there are some travelers who visit this city during Christmas celebrations, as, at this time of the year, joy and festivities galore, many visitors tend to avoid the holiday rush.

As soon as the flight lands at the airport, visitors can travel directly to the Station Termini instead of standing in long queues waiting for a private cab. Private taxis should only be used when visitors are carrying heavy luggage. Public transportation in the city is not only fast and efficient but highly affordable. Budget travelers mostly use this network of transportation ensuring accessibility to the tourist attractions much easier. Enjoying these attractions is convenient by booking cheap flights to Rome.

Europe has a plethora of different faces which add various charm to its artistic uniqueness – all of them forming the ancient continent as fetching and boundless tourist destination satisfying all kinds of desires for history, past, art, cuisine, fashion, shopping and entertainment in all its known and unknown forms. Europe offers endless ways to be explored, and every ‘flirtation’ has nothing to do with the other just like every destination, so the only tough choice standing in your way is which way to go.

And since every journey has to start glamorously and also has to end up this way, Italy is probably the best introduction to Europe’s fascination and splendour being the most convincing representation of an ancient civilization that reached the peak of human abilities. And modern Italy knows how to cherish its rich historical legacy and how to integrate it into the contemporary vision of the country.

vacationhomesRome is captivating with its fast paced daily life of a capital city and renowned remnants of ancient times scattered through the whole city. Roman culture made one of the greatest and indisputable contributions to the rich cultural life of the continent, and exploring its basis can only give us an idea on where the foundations of this culture lay.

Rome is the place to indulge yourself with la dolce vita pleasures: top notch food, wines and wardrobe renewal – exquisite boutiques of the Italian designers; fluffy ice-cream and foamy cappuccino are just a small part of the things that you can try out. The eternal city, as they call it, possesses eclectic mix of stupendous landmarks and dynamic lifestyle being among the most majestic and romantic places on earth. Similarly to the Ancient Rome, today’s Rome is also built upon seven hills. The central area is called Campo Marcio (named after the god of the war – Mars) and it is the place where the training of the army has been held centuries ago; currently the area is a treasury chest of some of the most eminent sights. Rome’s historical center is part of the cultural heritage of UNESCO with its splendid castles, Roman ruins, refined statues and centuries old basilicas.

What makes Rome more unique than other cities is its incomparable number of landmarks; besides the gorgeous remnants of the Roman Empire, Rome preserved several Medieval neighbours, intricately projected squares, vivid markets and, last but not least – Saint Peter Basilica in Vatican city, being the biggest, richest and most flamboyant church in Italy. Keep in mind that in order to enter its premises, you need to be dressed properly.

The Roman Coliseum is the biggest amphitheater in the Antiquity; it has been opened in 82 AD with festive games proceeding for 1000 days. The Coliseum is an architectural and engineering miracle, symbol of both Roman majesty and cruelty and a present for the Roman citizens. The spectators sat in accordance with their rank, social status and sex. The emperor himself had his own marble box on the first row; the senators used to take the seats with the best view around him. The next most attractive seats had been occupied by the richest and most influential citizens followed by the ordinary men; the women from the populace took the worse places in the upper sectors. The games started out as glorification of the gods but quickly lost their religious twang, and only the spectacle remained, often a bloody and a fierce one. Among the most popular were the battles between gladiators and between animals. There are also fights where animals tear criminals to pieces.

I have yet to book a flight to the Eternal City, but I have already compiled a list of the Rome vacation spots that I am looking forward to seeing.

Top Spots to Visit in Rome

The first things that usually come to mind when you mention a Rome vacation are explorations of the famous city of the Roman Empire. Roma is the capital and the largest city in Italy where everyone gets to live La Dolce Vita. The centre of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and this is the place that my heart is set to see. Some of the must-visit spots here include the site of the ruins in the Colosseo. It’s said to connect the Piazza Venezia and the Colosseum, with the structure being built as far back as the early 1930s.

The Pantheon which dates back to 125 A.D. is another thing that I’m looking forward to seeing. There’s also the Seven Hills of Rome, the piazzas and the sumptuous local cuisine that I’m looking forward to sampling.

Other Events Held in Rome that You Should Not Miss

Now, if you’ve already had your fill of some of the most famed tourist attractions in Rome, there are events that you absolutely should not skip. Schedule your Rome vacation in time for these events so that you can have your fill of everything that the city and its people have to offer:

The summer festival in Rome

Starting from the month of June and extending all the way through September, the summer festival in Rome is one of the most sought-after events in the city. Here, you will have your fill of some of the most awesome sporting events, sample what the music and film industry has to offer, and maybe even rub elbows with celebrities!

Castel Sant'Angelo, Rome, Italy

The La Festa di San Silvestro

If you would like to welcome the New Year in the Eternal City, you’ll be just in time for this luscious feast in Rome. Fireworks will usher in the New Year at the Piazza del Popolo, and you can have your fill of delicious Italian wines.

The Rome Film Festival and the Rome Jazz Festival

Held annually every October, the Rome Film Festival showcases hundreds of local films from Italy and around the world. During your Rome vacation, you can also enjoy jazz music during the jazz festival. Famous jazz singers and musicians from all over the globe flock to the city to enjoy a common interest which is music.

These and more are the events that you should definitely look forward to when visiting Rome. If you’re anything like me, book a flight now and have a grand time exploring one of the best and most beautiful cities in the world.

Now you know what are the must see sights, so the only thing left is to actually plan your trip to Rome (interesting to know is that the Danish term is rejser til Rom). In case you need some more travel tips, drop by my blog – Channel Voyager.

During a European cruise, you have the opportunity to see some of the most amazing European destinations. At the top of this list is Rome, an ancient city full of modern appeal. Extend your trip by planning to spend some time in the Eternal City.

Rome’s Main Attractions

During a first-time visit to Rome, there are a few main attractions that must be seen including the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Trevi Fountain.

Luxury Boutiques

Step foot in Rome and one of the first things you will notice is how fashionable the locals are, even when out running simple errands. How could they not be with their streets lined with the likes of Prada and Dolce & Gabbana? The most prestigious place to do some shopping is along elegant Via de Condotti. Here you will find luxury boutiques from some of Italy’s most famous fashion designers including Versace and Armani. It is a real experience to walk into Bulgari or Fendi and make a purchase in the city where these brands were founded.

Upscale Dining

Many people plan entire trips to Rome just to eat. While other areas of Rome specialize in rustic dishes, restaurants in Rome are as refined as those in New York City — but with that distinct Italian flair. Beyond dining in the latest and greatest restaurants, Rome also offers the opportunity to engage with food and wine. If you’re interested in cooking, how about signing up for a cooking lesson with a local chef? If you want to expand your wine knowledge, there are many tastings (some paired with food) that will be both educational and fun. There are also many walking tours led by local experts focused on traditional Roman food.

Relax at the Spa

Part of the pleasure of Rome is strolling through Campo dei Fiori or Piazza Navona after dark, soaking in the architecture and atmosphere. After all that walking, you’ll probably be ready for a serene spa day. This capital city has a range of decadent spas to choose between, including Cavalieri Grand Spa, De Russie Wellness Zone, and Hassler Roma Spa. Do a little investigating before your arrival and you could plan a spa day that includes a romantic couple’s massage. These spas are very popular and in demand, so be sure to make your reservations in advance online to ensure an appointment on the day and time you desire.

Rome’s Little Pleasures

It’s easy to fill your days in Rome with so many museums, shops, and boutiques. But part of the fun in Rome is slowing down to enjoy the city’s little pleasures. Instead of rushing to dinner, how about sitting down in a square for an aperitivo? For a little culture, you can get dressed up for an evening at the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma. The Italians are known for their sweets, so after dinner or the theater, why not stop into Gina, a restaurant known for its dolci? After a few days, you might start thinking like an Italian, beginning your day with an espresso and joining in on the daily evening stroll.

Rent a Luxury Apartment

If you really want to see how the Romans live, step into their shoes. Rent a luxury Rome apartment and explore the local neighborhoods. Here you can take fashion inspiration from the locals, discover off-the-beaten-path boutiques for shoes and handbags, and linger of a glass of wine at lunch in a local ristorante. A luxury apartment will provide generous living space and a kitchen for stocking healthy snacks and drinks. When researching, keep your eye out for rentals with special touches such as a soaking tub, a balcony with views, or rooftop access.

Regardless of where you stay and what you do, there’s nothing like a trip to Rome.  Take your time and enjoy it!

The first structures of the Roman Forum date to the 7th century BC, and over the next 900 years, became the center of the Roman Republic. Built on a grand scale with civic center, covered market and many religious buildings, it is one of the most significant ruins of ancient Rome in spite of the fact that very little is left standing.

Location

The Forum is located in a valley between the Palatine Hill on the southern border and the Capitoline Hill on the western border. On the east is the Velia, which was leveled in antiquity and two hills Quirinal Hill and Esquiline Hill on the north.
The best place to view the whole complex is from Palazzo Senatorio which is behind Piazza del Campidoglio. After gazing at the ruins and imagining the ancient grandeur and enormous size walk through the broken columns and stones with a guidebook and plenty of time.

Description and Purpose

Filled with beautiful statues and architecture, it was the showcase of Rome for centuries. The Sacra Via or main road through the Forum connected the Arch of Titus, the Temple of Castor and Pollux, the Temple of Saturn and the Temple of Vesta. The presence of these many significant buildings and monuments testify to the importance of the Roman Forum to the city life.

The Forum was designed by Vitruvius and contained Rome’s key buildings including the Arch of Septimius Severus built in 203 AD and the platforms for public speeches, the Roman Forum Rostra as well as the Curia. The prows of captured warships decorated the Rostra and the triple arch had reliefs that depicted Rome’s victories in war.

The Sacra Via was the culmination point of the heroic military processions when victorious generals entered the city though the Triumphal Gate. The Forum is the oldest part of the city and many great and famous men walked on the same stones that are there today.

Where did it go?

It was for centuries the center of the world with a senate house, law courts, business district and market, and even with only the stones and ruins that can be seen today, it still lifts the heart and mind. After the fall of the Roman Empire in the west, the Forum became a cattle pasture at the end of the 4th century when it was buried and forgotten.

The Roman Senate building or Curia is the largest brick building in the Forum that still has a roof. The original marble floor and tiered seats for senators is still there. The arch of Titus celebrating victories in Jerusalem and the arch of Septimius Severus celebrating victories in Iraq and Iran are on opposite ends of the Forum. Eight magnificent columns of the temple of Saturn which was built in 17 BC remain.
The lead and bronze tiles and clamps were stripped and stolen, the marble blocks and, incredibly, the beautiful statues were burned to make lime for cement. This magnificent place remained forgotten until the nineteenth century when it was appreciated again.

The Roman Colosseum is one of Rome´s most iconic sites. It represents the superb engineering and architecture of the Roman Empire as well as the fascinating history of the city of Rome. Indeed no visit to Rome would be complete without a visit to the Colosseum.

History

The Colosseum was commissioned by the Emperor Vespasian in the year 72 A.D. and later completed under the rule of his son, Titus in 82 A.D. The final modifications were completed during the reign of Domitian, the brother of Titus, who ruled from 81-96 A.D. The original name for the Colosseum was the Flavian Amphitheater, which was derived from Flavius, the family name of the emperor and his sons.
Unlike other amphitheaters built before it, the Colosseum was built in the heart of Rome as opposed to in the outskirts. It was literally erected in place of the lake that Emperor Nero had designed in the landscaped gardens of his villa Domus Aurea. The area was previously densely inhabited but after the Great Fire of Rome of 64 A.D. destroyed the homes in the area, Nero commandeered the land to build his villa. The choice of building site represents a symbolic return of the land to the people after it had been appropriated by Nero.

Uses

In ancient Rome, the Colosseum was used to host gladiatorial contests, wild animal fights, executions, dramas, reenactments of battles and other public spectacles. At the inaugural spectacle in 80 A.D., over 9,000 animals were killed in wild animal fights. The gladiatorial contests and animal fights continued for several centuries. The last known gladiatorial contests were in the year 435 and the last known animal fights were held in 523.

During the medieval period, the Colosseum served as a castle, a cemetery and a workshop. Later, during the 16th and 17th centuries, the Catholic Church began to show interest in the Colosseum. One church official proposed setting up a wool factory in the amphitheater to provide employment to prostitutes. Another official managed to authorize its use to host bullfights though the authorization was later revoked. Pope Benedict XIV consecrated the Colosseum because he claimed it was the place where Christian martyrs had died years before although no historical evidence supports this claim. Subsequent popes and Benito Mussolini promoted restoration and excavation projects as well.

Structure

The size and excellent preservation of the Colosseum rarely fails to impress the visitor. The amphitheater is elliptical, measuring 88 meters long and 156 meters wide. The 80 arched entranceways provided access to the 55,000 spectators who could be accommodated in the amphitheater at any time. The seats are arranged in tiers. Spectators in ancient Rome were distributed among the tiers according to their social strata. Separate areas were proportioned for senators, the non-senatorial noble class, plebeians and wealthy citizens. Interestingly, actors, gravediggers and former gladiators were banned from the Colosseum.

The Colosseum Today

Today, the Colosseum is one of Rome´s principal tourist destinations, attracting millions of visitors per year. It is one of the most well-known symbols in Rome and is well worth a visit for any tourist in Rome.

Attractions in Rome

Rome is filled with a number of tourist attractions, you will never run out of places to visit, only time.  One of the most recommended attractions is the Colosseum which has to be one of the most popular tourist attractions in Rome (it gets very busy in the peak season). Built in AD 80, the Colosseum held many gladiatorial and wild animal fights and today, there are men dressed in gladiatorial costume to help set the scene as to how it was like back then. On Sundays the road leading up to the Colosseum, the Via dei Fori Imperiali is closed to traffic and therefore it is nice to stroll up to the Colosseum, there are plenty of souvenirs to buy from the vendors along the road.

One of Rome’s most beautiful sqaures, the Piazza Navona, was originally built as a stadium for athletic contests. Until the late 19the century the square was flooded to be used for mock naval battles and other aquatic sports.  It is now filled with lavish cafes and three Baroque fountains. Don’t miss out on the delicious ice cream dessert, tartufo. which you can have at one of the cafes.

A third tourist attraction you won’t want to miss is the Pantheon.  It was built 1,800 years ago and until 1436 was the largest dome in the world at 43 metres high.  With marble columns and brick walls, the Pantheon was originally a temple for pagan gods but was converted into a church in 609AD. It now contains the tombs of the artist Raphael and many Italian kings.  The Pantheon borders the Piazza della Rotonda, which has a central fountain and obelisk.
