Family vacations are the best part of the year. To spend time surrounded by the closest and most loved people in your life is something that can not be compared to any other experience. When there are kids in the family things can get a little tough. There is much to be planned and predicted and still the unexpected situations can not be fully avoided.

Children have special needs and expectations, and they have to be at least partly satisfied otherwise the vacation can turn into torture for everybody present. What can be interesting for you will probably be no big deal for the little ones and the opposite – children enjoy things in which you see no sense.

travel-from-toRome – the capital of Italy – is one great destination for visiting. There is almost no one in Europe and in the world that will not love to see this old and beautiful city. And the best part of the offer is that is as interesting for the children as it is for you with its numerous ruins and long stories about the past battles.

The Coliseum should be the first place to start with. It is one major monument, significant part of which is kept till today. Being one of the major buildings in the ancient Rome, it is still keeping the central position in the modern life of the capital. The Coliseum is situated in the heart of the city on the right bank of the river, crossing it, which is Tiber. This is good because you will not wander too much until you find it. It is almost fifty meters high so it is easily seen from most parts of the city. The children will love to jump in the wholes, where were the old corridors of the Coliseum or up and down the tribunes, forming very good for playing stairs.

The next stop can be the Fountain di Trevi – one unique piece of architecture. It is situated in the center of the city as well and is considered to be one of the most romantic places in the planet. It may bring you back to the memories of the beginning of your life as family and wake-up sweet memories for great moments in your life. It is interesting with the combination of details and ornaments in its architecture. The original time of its building is going back to the Baroque times.

Saint Peter’s Square – the republic in the republic – this in one part of Rome which will leave both you and your children with wide open eyes and mouth. On the way to the incredible Vatican you can do some shopping or stop at the numerous restaurants and bars for a rest. The city of the Pope inside will offer many nice spots for observing like the statues of the saints, with you will see wherever you look. St. Patrick’s Basilica is one point of interest inside the square which deserves special attention. Leave some time to visit the Vatican museum, which is situated just adjacent to the Basilica.

Last children can see the ruins of the Roman forum. It is close to the Coliseum and the complex of the forum consists of several smaller and bigger monuments. Former center of the political life of the city, today this is a venue for long walks, observation and endless games for the kids, who can run up and down and hide in the numerous places, which will seem good for this purpose.

This past December, I was lucky enough to be granted the privilege of spending my winter holidays amongst the intricate statues and magnificent architecture of the beautiful city of Barcelona, Spain. With my own determination to raise my vacation to the highest level, I opted for a luxury trip and experienced everything I could first class.

Barcelona from above
Barcelona from above by Monika

The pampering on my holiday trip began with my sleeping quarters. If you’ve ever tried to plan a trip to Barcelona, you’ll know that there are a ton of tempting accommodations waiting to hook you in. From gorgeous mansion hotels with three-story pools and more native Barcelona foliage than a Spaniard forest itself to rustic-themed apartments housed in incredible ancient buildings overlooking Barcelona’s bustling streets, it can prove to be quite difficult to choose somewhere to sleep.

Personally, I was especially drawn in by a little bed and breakfast off Calle Pau Claris called Boutique Bed & Breakfast. From the neat, informative website, the place seemed to me like an amusing twist between a quaint parlor bed and breakfast from the late 1800s and a modern, “with-it” techno retreat. The site employed grand use of the term ‘cozy’ in their descriptions, yet also proudly featured an image of an Apple Macbook Air laying open on one of their beds. As someone who can’t stand to live without my iPad, Twitter, and morning cappuccino, the bed and breakfast description boasting free WiFi and advanced modern coffee facilities made me quickly find my way to the “Reserve Room” button. Thankfully, Boutique didn’t disappoint in the slightest. My little suite was, in fact, cozy with a distinct modern feel, and the staff was incredibly friendly. Despite the fact that Boutique Bed & Breakfast was not really a ‘luxury’ accommodation, I felt more refreshed and relaxed than I believe I ever would have with a three-story pool outside my window.

The real luxurious aspects of my trip, however, began with the first activity I partook in my first morning in the awe-striking capital city. Under a bright December sun, I spent the morning being pampered by Rosa at Barcelona Massage, an excellently priced deluxe massage studio which offers a relaxing variety of exotic massages derived from countries and cultures all over the world, from Mayan to Silk to Sea Shell massages and a wide range of body scrubs too.

Feeling giddy and a bit light-headed from my fantastic Silk massage, I was ready to party, so I opted for a night on the town at the Coppelia Club. I’d heard great things about Coppelia online before I arrived, and I was not disappointed. Coppelia manages to give patrons a first-hand Spanish club experience while still maintaining an elegant, classy feel that is nothing like the get-down-and-dirty, grimy filth nightclubs I’ve come to despise in America. Modern and chrome-finished, I enjoyed a delectable eucalyptus honey infused vodka premium while perched on a barstool feeling incredibly sophisticated and right at home.

The next afternoon, after sleeping until almost noon (which I blamed on jetlag but which also might have had something to do with my eucalyptus honey vodka) I felt compelled to conquer the bright blue waters I’d been admiring ever since my plane touched down on Barcelona soil. Through the kindness and luxurious accommodations of Barcelona Yacht Charter, I was able to enjoy a fantastic afternoon on a twelve passenger sailing yacht, slicing through that tantalizing blue water at god-speed, lying on the deck giggling to myself with a bottle of sparkling champagne.

My yachting, spa, and nightclub adventures were probably the three most interesting parts of my holiday in Barcelona. The rest of the week I spent eating delicious Spanish cuisine, drinking rich wine straight from the Spanish vineyards, and lying out on the beach, longing to sail those clear blue waters again. In conclusion, well, let’s just say I’ll be getting back on that Barcelona-bound plane next December, and I might just end up extending my stay beyond a meagre seven days.

Spring is the best time to visit this beautiful city. The spring season continues from March through May. Another time, that is suitably appropriate for the visit is the fall season when the weather is perfect for exploring the city at leisure. Since summers are comparatively hot and humid, visitors mostly avoid these two seasons for their travel. This time, the city is full of tourist crowd, and it is difficult to get hold of preferred seats and preferred rooms in a hotel. Winters, on the other hand, are quite chilly, and it becomes difficult to venture out. Most of the time, tourists have to stay cooped up in their hotel rooms and the excitement of the vacation wanes. Although, there are some travelers who visit this city during Christmas celebrations, as, at this time of the year, joy and festivities galore, many visitors tend to avoid the holiday rush.

As soon as the flight lands at the airport, visitors can travel directly to the Station Termini instead of standing in long queues waiting for a private cab. Private taxis should only be used when visitors are carrying heavy luggage. Public transportation in the city is not only fast and efficient but highly affordable. Budget travelers mostly use this network of transportation ensuring accessibility to the tourist attractions much easier. Enjoying these attractions is convenient by booking cheap flights to Rome.

A Bit of Romance

If you want a bit of romance you know where to go, don’t you? Actually, the whole country is extremely good for romantic breaks but the word Venice springs instantly into the minds of most couples who want to enjoy an unforgettable break. Even if you have read a thousand stories about the place and seen hundreds of pictures of it you will still be bowled over by the setting and the atmosphere.

A Lot of Art

Art is all around you when you go to Italy and nowhere more so than in Florence. This famously beautiful city holds some of the most exciting art treasures known to man. If walking from one museum to another and looking from one stunning piece of art to another is your idea of heaven this is a fantastic choice of destination. As it is in Tuscany you can expect great food and lots of friendly hospitality.

A Whole of Sight Seeing

The only problem with Rome is that there is just so much to do there. This is fine if you have plenty of time to wander around and see the famous sights but in shorter breaks the overwhelming number of things to do can be just too much to take in. The Coliseum, the Roman Forum, the Vatican and the Pantheon are just some of the amazing tourist attractions which have fascinated visitors here for centuries. If you want to feel as though you are steeped in history while on holiday then you can’t do much better than go to Rome, as long as you have the time to enjoy it all.

A Huge Amount of Freedom

Going on a camping holiday has always been a popular choice with those people who want to enjoy a lot of freedom while they are away. This type of break is especially recommended for families and those who want to enjoy their family holidays on a relatively tight budget. Camping in Italy is increasingly common now as there are lots of top campsites across the country. A quick look at a travel site like Eurocamp or Keycamp ones will give you a good idea of what to expect once you get across there.

Although the political capital of Poland is of course Warsaw, the student and tourist capital of the country is without doubt Krakow. Consisting of some of Europe’s most beautiful medieval architecture and more bars per square mile than any other city, this cosmopolitan college town offers something for everyone.

While you could easily spend a few months exploring the many corners of Krakow, should you be heading there just for a week, or even for a weekend, there are a number of key experiences that really should not be missed. I will now outline seven perfect ways to spend your time in this beautiful city.

1. People Watching at Rynek Glowny

Those that just want to sit and watch the world go by, would be hard pushed to find a better place in the whole of Europe. Krakow’s main square is not only the largest in Europe, it is also lined with over forty outdoor bars and restaurants. Regardless of whether you want to enjoy a light breakfast or an evening beer, you are sure to find the perfect place to sit and simply take in the scene. Day or night, the square is a hive of activity with an eclectic mix of both locals and tourists, bikes and horse drawn carriages.

2. A Romantic Meal in Kasimeirz

The old Jewish district of Kasimeirz is one of Krakow’s most dynamic and cosmopolitan areas. At it’s center is, of course, a small square lined with bars and cafes but the real prize can be found in the many winding streets packed with quaint cafes and small art galleries. Incredibly popular with both students and tourists alike, no visit to Krakow would be complete without at least one night exploring this side of town. It is also the best place to go for romantic meal for two.

3. Explore the Hectic Nightlife

The two best places for a night out in Krakow are the Rynek Glowny area and Kasimeirz. The area around the main square is the part of Krakow that officially has more bars per square mile than anywhere else in Europe and there are countless clubs that don’t close until dawn. Kasimeirz on the other hand, while still offering it’s fair share of clubs, is known for it’s many chilled out student bars ideal for a few drinks in a significantly quieter environment.

4. Shopping at Galeria Krakowska

Located immediately next to the cities main train station, this shining example of just how fast Poland’s economy is growing immediately dispels any misconceptions that tourists may have about Eastern European cities. Encompassing three floors, countless fountains and an endless selection of designer clothing stores, those who love to shop will feel perfectly at home here. A wide range of dining options are available on the top floor, making the shopping center the perfect place for a relaxing day out.

5. Explore Poland’s Tragic Past

Although Krakow offers visitors many illustrations of the atrocities of World War II, few are as harrowing as excursions to nearby Auschwitz. What remains of the largest German concentration camp has been open to tourists for many years and the wide range of tours available are both harrowing and highly educational. Although certainly not a pleasant day in the sun, a visit to this museum of one of humanities darkest times is not something that you are ever likely to forget.

6. A Romantic Walk Along the Vistula River

Culminating in the towering Wawel Castle, a stroll along the Vistula river is a wonderful way to spend a sunny day or a romantic evening. And thanks, to it’s convenient route, pointing the way from Rynek Glowny to Kasimeirz, the walk can easily be fit into even the shortest of visits to Krakow. Should you have the time however, why not hire a bike and really take advantage of the peaceful views on offer.

7. Visit the Tatra Mountains

The popular mountain town of Zakopane is just a two hour bus ride from Krakow and not only offers some fantastic hiking opportunities in Summer, it transforms into the most popular skiing resort in Poland each Winter. Many people are surprised to learn that Poland actually offers some tremendous skiing opportunities and unlike the Swiss Alps, a few days in the snow can be had on a backpackers budget. A word of warning however, don’t take the train which for some strange reason takes twice as long as the bus.

Venice – this beautiful city, famous for it’s network of canals and gothic architecture is unfortunately also famous for being one of the more expensive cities in Europe to visit. It’s easier than you think however to plan a break on a budget, especially with cheap flights to the nearby town of Treviso.

Accommodation

Staying on the outskirts of Venice is generally much cheaper than staying in on the Grand Canal, however the city is small enough to walk around on foot so you won’t be far from the centre of the action. Some of the best budget accommodation can be found in guest houses where the owners pride themselves on providing cheap and clean rooms for as little as £18 a night. Alternatively you can stay in the mainland area of Mestre for a fraction of the cost of a Venice hotel but you may wish to consider transport costs in and out of the city.

Eating Out

Head to the markets for a bit of lunch if you are eating on a budget. There are a number of outdoor markets near Rialto that packed with fresh fruit and veg, delicious breads and pastries and seafood.

If you are eating out in the evening avoid the main tourist squares such as the Piazza San Marco. Here you may be charged by the restaurant just for sitting down, and you can be sure that they will also charge you heavily for the little bowl of bread left on the table. Instead look for the restaurants on the edge of the city, especially if there are locals dining. Try the Trattoria Alle Due Gondolette in the Sestiere Cannaregio for some outstanding local cuisine and seafood for around €12. Portions are big and there is no cover charge either.

Don’t forget that some of the finest pizza and calzone to be found can be purchased from the numerous street stalls around the city. Grab yourself a slice, sit down by the canal and watch the world go by. Even better when followed by some of Venice’s famous gelato!

Travel

By far the best and cheapest way to travel round Venice are the network of public transport boats known as Vaporetti. You can buy passes for the Vaporetti that are valid for from 12 hours to up to a week depending on how long you are staying. A 12 hour ticket is €16. Just remember to validate your ticket using the machine each time you get on and off the boat or you may be fined by the inspectors. The Vaporetti routes can take you all over the city, down the Grand Canal and even over to the island of Murano where you can watch glass-blowers creating some stunning works of art.

Seeing the Sights

The most wondrous sight in Venice is the Carnival which is celebrated all over the city during the month of February. There are events throughout the city and many of them are free – there’s no need to book one of the over-priced tours that are offered by so many agents. The official Venice website has a downloadable brochure of what’s going on during this special time from masked parades to music.

If you are thinking of visiting some of the famous tourist attractions, how about the Basilica di San Marco which is free? Many of the churches such as the Santa Maria della Salute are also open to visitors and host some amazing artwork and architecture.

And finally…

Even if you’re a hopeless romantic, BlueTrips.co.uk recommends you avoid the gondolas like the plague. You can eat and drink for a couple of days on the cost.. Instead pop a little Vivaldi on your iPod when you’re cruising around on the Vaporetti and I promise you won’t miss out! If you enjoy taking a break near the water, why not have a look at Dongo on the shores of Lake Como, still in Italy?

The first Sunday of October is traditionally the day of the oldest marathon in Europe which annually takes place in Košice, Slovakia. Košice Peace Marathon, as it is named, is the second oldest marathon in the world (just after the famous Boston Marathon in USA – 1897). History of this athletic grandpa dates back to 1924, when the first run was held with only eight participants. Košice Peace Marathon managed to survive also the bad times during the World War II and now it is a traditional run of more than 6,000 runners from all over the world.

It is certainly the biggest sporting celebration of Košice, when the whole city turns into a marathon atmosphere. The preparations of the exciting street circuit starts already few weeks in advance. Those of you who are not so brave to run all the 42 km long track, may try the half marathon in the length of 21 km or mini-marathon in the length of 4.2 km. The marathon includes also companies’ run and 20 km long races for skaters, wheelchair users and handbikers. In addition to the main competition there is a rich cultural program, so the visit is also suitable for non-runners.

You can register for the run during the whole year and the registration fee is €30-€50 (depends on the time of registration). You can do so online on the official website of Košice Peace Marathon (at least a week in advance) or personally – the last opportunity to register is this Saturday.

Organizer offers very cheap accommodation in student hostels or you can use the overnight services of one of the many hotels in Košice.

So if you still don’t have plans for this weekend, then come to the most beautiful city in Slovakia and enjoy unforgettable experiences.

Copenhagen is a beautiful city with an amazing atmosphere, which is multiplied when sitting over a beer or wine in a port or in a picturesque corner of old town. Copenhagen offers all. Although Copenhagen is still in motion, it’s not a hectic or rushed – but looks very kindly, and perhaps a bit lazy. When the sun shines, the garden restaurants are open, and lot of people come to eat, drink and have fun.

In the capital of Denmark you can find literally everything you could imagine about culture. Thanks to absolutely flat plain, which is so typical for Denmark, Copenhagen is the perfect place suitable for the construction of beautiful castles and palaces. From the Royal Palace Amalienborg Slot, through Rosenborg Castle and Christiansborg Palace to Borsen palace.

What you definitely should not miss are many small museums in the city. Museum of Danish design, fabulous Museum of Hans Ch. Andersen, Karen Blixen Museum in a short distance from Copenhagen…etc… But on a small area of Copenhagen there is still squeezing something else – it is independent State of Christiania that was founded in the 70′s of 20th century.

For the lovers of modern architecture there is a new library building named the Black Diamond, or a brand new opera house built as a gift for Danish people.

Perhaps the best feature of Copenhagen is the possibility of long walks through the city – through the Pedestrian Zone Strøget or through some of the parks.
