For the cultural tourist, Dublin does not disappoint. The city as it stands is a palimpsest of times gone by, with old churches, remnants of the city walls and bullet holes on the façades of stone buildings all harking back to different periods of Irish history. For any tourist interested in history and the arts, Dublin hosts many museums, each housing cultural relics and pieces of art. If you want to get a taste of culture during your stay in Dublin, here are two of the museums that have the most to offer.

The National Gallery of Ireland

The National Gallery of Ireland was established in the 1860s and has since amassed an impressive collection of art, both Irish and European. Before one even enters the building, it’s hard not to pause a moment to take in its external appearance. The gallery is a traditional, noble-looking stone building on the Merrion Square side, while its Millenium Wing, which one can enter from Clare Street, was built in the Brutalist style and presents an ultramodern appearance to passers-by on that side of the building. Some of the highlights from the collection include Caravaggio’s “The Taking of the Christ”, which was thought to be lost until the 1990s when it was found in a Jesuit building in Dublin, Irish painter William Leech’s “Convent Garden, Brittany c. 1912” and the beautiful, expressionist works of Jack B. Yeats, brother to the renowned poet William B. Yeats.

The Chester Beatty Library

This intimate museum is nestled between Dublin Castle and its Coach House. It was established in the year 2000, won “European Museum of the Year” in 2002 and has been described by The Lonely Planet guide as “not just the best museum in Ireland, but one of the best in Europe”. The museum hosts a small, but wonderfully curated collection of manuscripts, ancient texts, prints and drawings and its “Sacred Traditions” section gives a comprehensive and fascinating view of Christianity, Islam and Buddhism. One of the highlights of the collection is one of the first illustrated versions of “The Life of the Prophet”. As well as the permanent collections, the museum hosts interesting temporary exhibitions and has a wonderful little café where you can eat Middle Eastern food as you mull over what you have seen.

If you are planning on staying in Dublin, once you have organised your accommodation, you should read up on some of the other museums in the city as there really is something for everyone, so you won’t be disappointed during your stay in the capital of the Emerald Isle.

Ireland’s capital city is always a sure bet when it comes to attracting visitors and it has also featured in many lists profiling the best cities in Europe. There are so many activities to take part in and places to experience meaning that the only issues truly are how many you can fit into your trip and where you should go first.

Food spots

Dublin offers some great places to eat in, ranging from cheap and cheerful to more expensive and upmarket. High on the list is the Italian eatery Dunne and Crescenzi on Frederick Street South in the Temple Bar area. With its fine wines, coffees and excellent menu choices this is an ideal place to dine at. Another great spot is Chapter One in Parnell Square offering reasonable prices as well as specialities from Irish seafood to sumptuous desserts.

Arts and culture

Among the artistic and cultural attractions is the national photographic archive in Temple Bar so perhaps this is a place to drop in to before or after your visit to Dunne and Crescenzi. Hundreds of thousands of images are stored here with exhibitions available. Also in the city is the Irish Museum of Modern Art (or IMMA) which is located near Heuston Station, in the building of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham.

Music

Also in the Temple Bar area is Andrew’s Lane which used to house plays and performances but has become a music venue in recent years. The vibe here is slightly out of the box, offering innovation not heard on your mainstream radio stations. Another superb venue is the Cobblestone in Smithfield in the north of the city. The Cobblestone is a fantastic pub as well as a setting for some of the finest in local music with distinctive interior design which really adds to the atmosphere.

Where to drink

Part of the fabric of Dublin is its proliferation of establishments in which you can sample the local drinks, which of course includes the finest Guinness. O’Donoghue’s in Merrion Row is an important place in the history of folk music and is always a hit for tourists. On Harry Street you can find McDaid’s with the standard food and drink offerings as well as a particularly attractive interior. For a livelier pub look no further than Kitty O’Shea’s, giving you a vibe more befitting of a holiday resort like Ibiza.

Whether you’re into religion, brews or historic sites, the fair city of Dublin, Ireland, will ensure that you never experience a dull moment during your visit.

Dublin is famous for its pubs, but why not go direct to the source for that pint? The Guinness Storehouse makes the nation’s most popular product: ale. The Storehouse is part of the original brewery which dates back 250 years. It has seven floors of exhibits devoted to the black brew; the tour ends with a pint in the Gravity Bar overlooking the city.

At the pubs you can sing Dublin’s most famous song, “Cockles and Mussels,” about fishmonger Molly Malone. Better yet, visit the bronze statue of Dublin’s most famous maiden as she sells her wares on Grafton Street. Molly Malone wasn’t just a legend; she was a real person who died in a cholera outbreak.

Molly’s statue is across the street from Trinity College, so now is a good time to visit the Book of Kells in the Old Library. The Book of Kells features ornately decorated pages of the Four Gospels in Latin. Trinity College is an important historic site, having been founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I. Famous students include Samuel Beckett and Oliver Goldsmith.

Next stop is a visit to Ireland’s largest church and national cathedral, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, named in honor of the country’s patron saint. The parish church dates back to 1191 and was named a cathedral in 1224. It stands next to the well where it is said St. Patrick baptized converts on a visit. One of Ireland’s most famous satirists, Jonathan Swift who wrote “Gulliver’s Travels,” was dean of the cathedral beginning in 1713.

End your list of the top five things to do in Dublin with a visit to Dublin Castle, built in the early 13th century and is some of the city’s oldest surviving architecture. See remains of an earlier Viking fortress on the grounds. Today, the castle is used for state functions and is the swearing-in place for Irish presidents.
