French barge cruises can take you just about anywhere you want to go, allowing you to visit landmarks, experience the culture, and even enjoy some of the finest of French cuisine. Thus, there are vast amounts of sites and experiences to visit while you’re in France, with each city possessing its own unique flavour of culture and cuisine, and amongst them is the highlighted city of Paris. When we think of France, we have an image in our mind of the Eiffel Tower or even the Notre Dame Cathedral, but there are some sights that you might not be as aware of.

French open market

Paris has been a home to the open markets for centuries. During the 5th century, the city of Paris (known as Lutetia at the time) opened its first market, known as Palu, to allow locals to buy, sell, and trade with one another and merchants from afar.

Today, there are over 90 open markets across the city of Paris, each offering its own unique flavour to the city. From there, open markets spread to other towns, each providing its own touch of exclusivity when it comes to the treasures you can find if you know what to look for.

The open markets have everything to offer. You might be searching for something unique to the Paris environment to dress up your home or attire, or maybe just a few gifts for your friends. Items can range from exotic cloth material, clothing, beautiful, one-of-a-kind scarves, hand-crafted jewelry, and even a few necessities you forgot to pack for the trip (oops!).

Every market has a different venue composed of different merchants, so no two markets are the same. If you didn’t find what you were looking for in one market, it’s probably time to move on to another in search of the right opportunity. And the truth is: if you couldn’t find it, you weren’t looking hard enough.

But it may not always be the products you’re actually looking for. Perhaps it’s the culture and learning experience that the open market presents that truly drives your eagerness to explore these fine cities. It’s even a great opportunity to really practice your French. And you’re definitely going to put your haggling skills to the test as you do a little bartering to practice your finesse. After all, getting the perfect deal for the right price is half the fun. As a helpful reminder, keep in mind that the markets are crowded, so be cautious where you keep your wallet or purse.

And the best part about exploring these vast, open markets is that you don’t always have to worry about lugging around too many goodies. You can always return to your comfy cabin in the barge to lighten the load and rest your feet for a while.

Enjoying the French culture is more than just seeing the sights. It’s meeting the people and interacting with them through the open markets. Here, you can really get to know the heart of Paris as you share the experience of a French cruise with your friends and family.

When people think of France, the first thing that most often pops into their mind is Paris, with its shopping avenues, Notre Dame, and of course, the Eiffel Tower. As enchanting and infamous as Paris is, there is so much more to France. In this article we will go on a tour of the country, with its top must-see locations around the country.

1. The Palace of Versailles

If you are staying in Paris for a portion of your visit, then just 20 kilometers away is situated one of the most opulent memorials to royalty – The Château de Versailles. Built by King Louis XIV, the palace is compromised of extensive landscaped gardens and sprawling, decorative castle grounds. It is recommended to take an audiotour of the castle grounds, or perhaps even a guided tour, as the history and stories behind the palace are both extensive and fascinating.

2. Bordeaux

The city of Bordeaux is listed as a World Heritage Site, as “an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble”. The city, and its surrounding region is famous worldwide for its excellent wines. It is also considered as France’s “Little Paris” thanks to its many cultural, architectural, and historical monuments. It is a lively town, with many young people as it contains the country’s largest university. Thanks to the youthful population, the town has a thriving cafe and night life scene. Paris is renowned as being one of the most romantic destinations in the world, and you might clearly envisage candlelit dinners, boat trips along the river Seine and enjoying the Eiffel Tower’s light show on a warm summers evening, as the ideal holiday. However, the summer isn’t the only time that this beautiful city can be enjoyed, and Christmas is the ideal time to explore Paris’s festive markets.

Once you’ve arrived in Paris, there are many markets to explore, and during the holiday season you’ll find that stalls pop up throughout the city. Little groups of wooden chalets offer a wide variety of delicacies and gifts from all over France, and they have become a traditional part of the Parisian Christmas season. Whether you’re on a family outing or are indulging in a wintery romantic break, the markets are an ideal place to find a few Christmas gifts and keepsakes. From homemade treats, including sausages, gingerbread and mulled wine, to handcrafted toys and gift ideas, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The Christmas markets of Paris are found scattered throughout the city, and one of the largest takes place on the Avenue des Champs- Elysées. In 2012, it opens on November 19th and stretches between the Place de la Concorde and the famed Champs- Elysées roundabout. Elsewhere, if you’re looking for a festive market ensconced in modern architecture, visiting La Défense is ideal. Here, you’ll find 350 stands in a vibrant and Christmassy atmosphere, all offering mouth watering foods and gifts to tempt you.

If you’re travelling with children, then Paris offers some ideal festive markets that are aimed towards keeping youngsters amused too. The Trocadero’s Christmas Market and Ice Rink has over 120 stands, but also offers snow villages and an ice-skating rink to enjoy. Meanwhile, Santa’s Village at Saint-Germain-des- Prés won’t fail to keep the family entertained.

With Paris being so simple to get too, it’s easy to make a day trip to the French capital. A channel crossing is ideal if you want to really feel like you’re going abroad, allowing the British coastline to fade away, and the thrill of nearing a new nation to cause excitement. For families, such a route is ideal, allowing children to have space to stretch their legs and indulge in the adventure. Meanwhile, sailing across beautiful seas with the spray below and blue skies above will truly get any romantic trip well underway.

Christmas is a great time of year to take a holiday, and though most people try to spend December 25th with close family and friends, enjoying a few days off earlier in the month is a great way to get into the festive spirit. The Parisian markets are a wonderful place to browse and shop whilst letting the Christmassy ambiance thrill you. And, if you’re looking for the perfect wintery day trip this year, heading to see the Paris markets will give you an entirely new take on this beautiful European city.

Although spring is supposed to be the time when Paris is at its most romantic, autumn is when it is at its most magical. It is in early autumn, just as the trees are beginning to turn from the greens of summer to the multitudinous hues of yellow, red and brown; when the parks and open spaces in the city take on a different ambiance; and when the weather is still warm enough to enjoy a stroll through them; that city breaks in Paris really beckon.  It is also a time when staying in Paris is cheaper than in the high season, and getting there has never been easier or less expensive since you can bus travel to Paris.

Of course you can spend all of your time visiting the usual tourist destinations. Even if you have seen the Eiffel Tower and the Notre Dame Cathedral many times before; even if you have previously walked the length of the Champs Elysees and you are familiar with the engravings on the Arc de Triomphe at the end of it; if you have already walked your feet off traipsing though the many chambers in the Louvre; and you have whiled away the time in several of Montmartre’s old cafes; no visit to Paris is complete without at least refreshing some of those experiences. But do make at least a little time to visit some of the many Parisian Parks.

Le Jardin du Luxembourg is one of the favourite parks with the locals. Amongst the many botanical displays you will find statues of France’s Kings and Queens, a wonderful Florentine palace, guignols (which are traditional French puppet shows), and ponds where you can hire a boat.

The Tuileries Garden just behind the Louvre dates back to the 16th century. It stretches from the Champs-Elysées to the Louvre and as well as its many autumnal trees and shrubs you will find many artefacts including sculptural works by Rodin and Maillol.

If you have a botanical interest than visit le Jardin des Plantes in the Latin Quarter where you will find literally hundreds of specimen plants and shrubs that look at their best during the early months of autumn. There is also a small menagerie there.

Jardin des Plantes, Paris, France

You may also care to venture as far as the Bois de Vincennes at the eastern edge of the city. This is a huge park and woodland with lakes, winding paths, botanical exhibits, a fairground and a zoo. You can even hire a bicycle there.

These are just a few suggestions, but you might also wish to visit the less well known Buttes-Chaumont, Parc Montsouris which boasts in excess of 1,400 trees, the huge open space of the Bois de Boulogne, or the modern Parc de la Villette.

You are quite likely to find that Paris in the autumn beats Paris in the spring hands down. To book a bus travel to Paris see idbus.co.uk.

More and more people are booking a cruise as part of their annual holiday. There is a wide choice of cruise types available to suit all needs and the common cruise in demand seems to be the romantic cruise for couples.

It is very common for a couple to seek a vacation abroad together to escape the hectic lifestyle at home. Whether it is to get away from the children or work, a romantic trip can help to put the spark back into a relationship.

Cruise Ship

But what are the most popular cruises in Europe for two people seeking a loving holiday? Here are the top 4 hotspots.

Dublin in Ireland

When looking for a cruise, choose an itinerary that stops by Dublin in Ireland. It is the capital and most populous city in the country and has a wealth of things to do including shopping facilities and a charming mix of medieval, Georgian and modern architecture to explore. It has a wealth of history and culture and after all the sight-seeing, you can cosy up together in a traditional Irish bar whilst easting traditional Irish cuisine.

Inverness in Scotland

Inverness is a city in Scotland and it is the perfect backdrop for a romantic getaway with peaceful highlands to enjoy. Situated on the banks of the River Ness, it is very picturesque and quiet; and you can even watch a school of dolphins frolic in the nearby Moray Firth.

Paris in France

Paris is renowned all over the world as the city of love. It is one of the best cities for couples to snuggle under the Eiffel Tower, wander down the quaint cobble-stone streets, and visit the elegant and classic French fountains. Can you think of anywhere better to rekindle the magic than in the romantic capital?

Greek islands

The Greek islands offer unbelievable beauty especially Mykonos, Santorini and Athens. It is widely reported that the best sunsets in the world can only be viewed in Santorini and the island offers fantastic views of the volcanoes as well as quaint villages to explore.

In contrast, Mykonos has gorgeous cobble-stone streets and has the trademark as a ‘Little Venice’. It is beautiful to see the little houses with balconies, windows and door built right on the sea.

If you plan on celebrating a special break with your loved one, why not choose one of the European destinations mentioned above for a romantic, fun holiday.

It’s just the two of you, the world is your oyster you can go anywhere, do anything. Every city in the world is perfect for a couple’s getaway. Here’s a pick of the best in Europe.

Paris

Paris is probably the most romantic city in the world, it’s as if it wants couples to be in love here, and indeed fall in love. Every street corner has a story to tell.

Paris at night, France
Paris at night, France by agaw.dilim

The Notre Dame Cathedral is a magnificent sight 81 metres high and nearly 150 metres long, with an even more impressive interior, its vaulted ceiling disappearing 38 metres into the gloom.

The building is the famous location of Victor Hugo’s tragic tale The Hunchback of Notre Dame. You’ll have a tremendous view of the whole city from the dizzying heights of the Eiffel Tower’s observation deck more than 270 metres up. Did you know than a quarter of all European visitors to the tower live in France?

Some Parisians will argue that the better view of the city is from the steps of the Basilica of Sacre-Coeur.

On a hill in the north of the city the view on a nice day is spectacular, but the district is more famous as the hangout of artists and thinkers – most notably Renoir, Toulous Lautrec, Modigliani and Picasso.

And don’t forget the most famous painting in the world, Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, with pride of place in the Louvre.

There are Metro stops everywhere, so you’ll never have to walk to each stunning location.

Venice

It just wouldn’t right to go to Venice and not to take a ride on a gondola. It might be a bit of a stereotype, but can you think of a better way to see the world’s most famous canal city? You can even have your very own personal serenade as you glide along the water.

Canal Grande, Venice, Italy
Canal Grande, Venice, Italy by admin

Some of Italy’s most important art is in Venice with works but the city’s great masters – including Titan, Carpaccio and Tintoretto – on display at the Gallerie dell’Accademia.

The evening is a beautiful time in the city, when at certain times of year the setting sun casts a pink glow over the city, as Venetians flock to their favourite bars for an evening aperitivo before a sumptuous meal.

Duck away from the major tourist spots, where you’ll pay a fortune for a slice of pizza of plate of antipasti, and you’ll come across some hidden gems where your taste buds will love you for the rest of your life.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is hugely popular with Brits skipping through the Channel Tunnel for a long weekend. It’s a vibrant city with the perfect mix of culture to keep you busy all day, and a nightlife that will exhaust you until morning.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Amsterdam, The Netherlands by Chris Yunker

Arriving at the Central Station you are right in the heart of the city, just a few steps from Dam Square, surrounded on all sides by the city’s most important buildings – the Royal Palace (which was briefly the home Napoleon Bonaparte when Amsterdam was the Third City of the Empire); the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), one of the most visited exhibition spaces in Holland, and the National Monument to commemorate the victims of World War Two.

The most famous of these victims is Anne Frank, the young Jewish girl who hid for two years in with her family and four other people.

Canal tours are the best ways to see the city, with stops that include Van Gogh Museum.

Madrid is the largest city in Spain and is also its capital city. It is considered as the best destination in Europe for arts and culture. Madrid doesn’t have Rome’s coliseum or Paris’s Eiffel tower, but its own specialty is its people. The people in Madrid will make you feel like you belong among them, they are a blend of helpful people, kind, hospitable and well cultured. That being said the city of Madrid truly has a great amount to see, and the 10 things which are absolutely essential for every traveler to see in Madrid are:

Royal Palace, Madrid, Spain
Royal Palace, Madrid, Spain by Konstantinos Dafalias

1. Madrid’s Royal Palace

The largest palace in Western Europe and probably the most beautiful is none other than the royal palace in Madrid. The palace holds many artistic treasures in the form of eighteenth century furniture along with priceless paintings and tapestry by Tiépolo Velázquez, Goya, Giordano and Mengs. A must visit because it is open to the public on all days in the year except on the occasions of special ceremonies and proceedings.

2. La Puerta del Sol

This is the central square of Madrid and is a short walk from the plaza mayor. It’s on the top 10 list due to the celebrations which take place in this location on New Year’s Eve. The square boasts the famous clock which everyone in Spain turn their eyes to. Millions gather on the square and will guzzle down a glass of wine for each of the 12 chimes at midnight on New Year’s Eve. This celebration is conducted every year in the blistering cold and is thoroughly enjoyed by every individual present there. The celebration is broadcast throughout Spain live every year.

3. The Debod Temple

What is a temple dedicated to gods Amon and Isis doing in Madrid? Many have asked this same question. An authentic Egyptian temple built in the year 2BC was shifted to Madrid in 1968 as a donation by the Egyptian government to the Spanish people. If the temple was not shifted from its original location in Egypt, it would have been submerged underwater from the construction of the Aswan dam. Along with the significance of the temple the site on which it stands is historic too; the site was host to revolts and riots during the 1936 Civil war.

4. The Prado Museum in Madrid

This is perhaps Madrid’s top and most famous cultural sight. Already ranked as one of the world’s top most art galleries it host works by revolutionary artists such as Raphael, Rubens, and Bosch. At the time of its inception the Spanish queen was impressed by the Louvre in Paris and wanted to boast her own country’s collection. At that point in history when art was given mass importance throughout the land this competition between both museums lead to a truly astounding collection and display of the best each country had to offer.

5. Retiro Park

Retiro Park is to Madrid as central park is to New York City. This is the most popular park in Madrid and is situated behind the Prado museum. The attraction in the park is the large lake where you can go boating. There are entertaining street performers in the park as well. The locals however use this park with the sole purpose of being lethargic. “Lazing around” transcends into an art form in this park.

6. La Gran Vía

This is possibly the most popular street in Madrid, often mentioned in many book and seen in many international movies this street boasts lavishly decorated building with great architecture. This large street was made with a view to solve the problem of a chaotic maze which previously had the same location.

7. The Rastro Flea Market

Every Sunday from 9 am to 3 pm in the center square of Madrid one of the most symphonic yet chaotic scenes can be seen. It is said to be the largest flea market in Europe hosting a variety of products both old and new. Over 3500 stalls stretch through many streets in the city’s working class neighborhood, it turns into a great place to practice some hardcore haggling skills. This great plethora of shopping, socializing, eating, drinking and generally having some Sunday fun was all brought to life at sometime during the middle ages.

8. Plaza de Cibeles

The fountain of Cibeles is a monument dedicated to the Goddess Cibeles who is the Greek goddess of fertility. This icon has been adopted by the football team of real Madrid and is found on all their football wear. This is often a hangout joint for football fans during and after matches. The football players themselves are in the tradition of visiting the fountain to meet their fans after they play a major tournament or championship.

9. The Basilica of San Francisco el Grande

The basilica is dedicated to our lady of the angles and is located near the royal palace. With the biggest dome in Spain and the 3rd biggest in Europe the basilica is truly a marveling sight. This one basilica host three chapels and each one is adorned with paintings done by a different yet equally famous artist of the time.

10. Fountain of Neptune

This fountain of Neptune who is the Greek God of the seas; is seen many times in several movies and is testimony to the hold Spain had on the seas during the crusades and to the strength of the Spanish navy. This statue is a counterpoint to the Cibeles fountain. Both at a point used to face each other but the government later decided to turn them to face the city.

Paris …

The name itself suggests an indulgent escape from reality. No place on earth is more romantic than Paris. One of the things that spring to mind is the sultry intrigue of this alluring city and the way it weaves its magic. The Moulin Rouge conjures up pictures of high-kicking girls dancing to the Galop from Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld, as depicted on the famous posters by Toulouse Lautrec. Not much has changed, the girls have got more glamorous, the routines more breath-taking and complex, but the exhilaration and the Ooh la la naughtiness of the leggy glamorous ladies in fantastic costume can-canning their way through the night is still the same.

Paris by Night

Paris has got a sparkling magical quality at night. There is nothing more exhilarating than taking an evening tour around Paris and recognising all the landmarks so etched in our consciousness. Covered in a blanket of night and sparkling so dazzlingly, Paris is a priceless gem.  Dress up in Paris style chic to feel part of it and experience the magic. The evening starts off with the Paris Illuminations tour. The Eiffel Tower is mesmerising and spellbinding in its splendid coat of many dazzling lights and colours. You will also see the Paris Opera in all its charismatic splendour. The Féerie Show

The tour ends up in the Montmartre area, at the famous Moulin Rouge show with its breath-taking exterior. The opportunity to watch the Féerie Show and take in the dazzling Paris nightlife will enchant and delight. It is like being on a movie set. The show itself is enthralling with its gorgeous dancers in their exotic costumes putting on a glitzy cabaret. Forget Las Vegas, with its copy-cat ways. This is the real deal. Every other show is just an imitation. The Moulin Rouge has put on spectacular shows since 1889. The place is steeped in tradition. Sip a glass of champagne while you watch the fascinating show with countless routines with fantastic costume changes, from girls (and boys) doing the splits, miniature ponies, to dancers wrestling snakes in a big water tank. You will be thoroughly entertained for two hours and after the show you will be taken back to the vicinity of your hotel, still tingling with the excitement of having watched the world’s top cabaret show.

Package

This package is made even more attractive by the fact that you will get the tour and the show for the price of a normal Moulin Rouge ticket alone.  This special evening will be not soon forgotten, its magic will stay with you for a long time. It is not called the city of romance for nothing.

Some of the best memories people have of their school days are the trips to foreign cities.

Yes, there was an educational aspect to the long weekend, or week if you were really lucky, but for the most part it was great fun just heading abroad to a new and exciting city.

So, what are the best destinations for a school trip to Europe?

Paris

When you’re young (or even as an adult) Paris is one of the most enchanting cities of the world. It has a well-deserved reputation as a city of romance, art, music and culture.

Paris, France

While the romance will be strictly off the cards for the youngsters they will all have heard of the magnificent Eiffel Tower; erected in 1889 and standing 320 metres tall it is the most recognised icon of Paris, and indeed France.

Not far from here is the Louvre, Paris’ stunning, not to mention enormous museum and of course the home of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, her curious smile put to canvas more than 500 years ago.

Don’t forget Notre-Dame Cathedral, the centre point of Victor Hugo’s famous tale “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame” and the resting place of the Unknown Soldier, the Arc de Triomphe.

As the first major destination once you’ve passed through the Channel Tunnel, Paris is by far the most popular, but don’t forget about the next two great cities.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a fabulous city, made up of 90 islands created by miles of canals, with 1,280 bridges connecting them all together.

The best way to see the city is by canal tours which stop at all of the major landmarks. One of the most famous stories of World War Two is The Diary of Anne Frank, a German-born girl who sadly didn’t survive the war following her arrest in 1944 when her family and four other Jewish families were discovered hiding in a cramped house. The house in now a museum, a testament to Anne and all of those who didn’t survive.

An impressive stop that must not be missed is the Royal Palace of Amsterdam. Built in 1855, citizens of the city were so impressed by its grandeur they declared it the eighth wonder of the world. It was once even home to the French king Louis Napoleon.

Brussels

It might be famous as the home of the European Parliament, but for literature fans out there you’ll be more excited by its connection to Hergé and his famous creation, the intrepid journalist Tintin.

The city is festooned with tributes to Belgium’s most famous cartoon character. There are walks, statues, museums, and even hotels that pay tribute in some way. Check out this list of Tintin related sights and landmarks.

Of course, let’s not forget that other thing that Belgium is famous for, and a favourite of children, chocolate! In November 2012 is the first Belgian Chocolate Fair, which will be kicking off Chocolate Week, how can you resist?

These cities are great for children of all ages you get a real taste of (chocolate) and exciting European cultures.

France is known all around the world as a romantic destination.  Most of its visitors head to the famous capital, Paris, to see landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, Champs Elysee, or the Louvre Museum.  What tourists don’t know is that somewhere north-west of France, a place called Brittany exists.  Brittany, previously regarded as the Little Britain, used to be a separate monarch which eventually united with France during the 1500s.  Now, this Celtic nation is known for its huge historic monuments and local traditions that can captivate the hearts of its visitors.

Megalithic sites at Carnac, Brittany, France by Steffen Heilfort

One unique and fascinating location in Brittany is the Megalithic sites at Carnac.  Found at the southern part of Brittany, these sites showcase prehistorically arranged standing stones that amount to more than 3,000 pieces.  These perfectly aligned megaliths are believed to be a Roman army that was magically turned to stones by Merlin.  Tours are arranged by local travel agencies for the convenience of the tourists.  Aside from seeing these megalithic sites, tourists can plan to extend their oneness with nature by camping in Carnac or by taking windsurfing or sailing lessons at the Bay of Quiberon.  At Carnac, you are sure to be amazed at how the standing stones were arranged at a time when technological machineries were not yet available.

Another area in Brittany that is a must-see and must experience is Locmariaquer.  Locmariaquer, about 7 miles away from Carnac, boasts of its beaches facing the Atlantic Ocean.  Similar to Carnac, Locmariquer also has prehistorically arranged megalithic stones that were believed to be erected during the Neolithic period.  It also has a burial monuments and statues that are thousands of years old.  The gargantuan stones that are aligned make visiting tourists believe in the existence of giants.  However, touring the other sights of Locmariaquer will refresh tourists’ religious beliefs as there are several churches around the area that were built hundreds of years ago.  Some of the churches are worth visiting are the Notre Dame de Kerdro, which was built in the 1000s by the Quimperle monks, and the Chapelle du Moustoir, which was built in the 1700s.  Don’t think that Locmariaquer will only satisfy tourists’ spiritual yearnings; this place can also satisfy tourists’ gastronomical needs.  As Locmariaquer is located near the bay, its coastal area is a source of the freshest and even the rarest oysters one can find.  Tourists can attest that this area has the best oysters as oyster cultivation in Locmariaquer dates back to the 1800s.

Finally, touring France will not be complete if one doesn’t take sight of at least one of the many existing castles in the country.  Brittany is one area that still has well-maintained castles that can bring visitors back in time. One of the worthwhile castles to be visited is the Fort La Latte that is located in Cotes-d’Armor in Brittany.  The view of this castle from either side is pristine waters of the Atlantic.  The structure has even been used as a location of some Hollywood films.

Now that you know of the unique sites and activities to do in Brittany, plan your trip now!
