If you’re looking for peace, tranquillity and solitude, then you could do worse than head for Pembrokeshire in south Wales…or more accurately, one of the five nearby islands that lie off its coastline.

Puffin, Skomer
Puffin, Skomer by Richard Toller

Four of these – Skokholm, Ramsey, Grassholm, and Skomer – are nature reserves, and the fifth is home to a Trappist monastery, where monks of the Reformed Cistercian Order make their own perfume and chocolates amidst the spectacular scenery of Caldey Island.

These islands are a bird-lovers’ paradise, where half the world’s population of Manx shearwaters nest and breed, and some of the estimated 86,000 burrows on Skokholm alone have been made by puffins.

Stronghold of the Gannet

The tiny Grassholm Island is a stronghold of the gannet; 80,000 of these gull-like birds have made their home here, and although inaccessible to anyone on foot, a local boat will take you close enough to experience the sight – and sometimes overpowering smell – of these huge seabirds.

In the 1930s, naturalist and adventurer Ronald Lockley lived on Skokholm, and published a best-selling account of his and his wife’s experiences as sole occupants of this little patch of paradise.

His ‘Dream Island’ may be long forgotten by all but the most avid of his literary followers, but small numbers of visitors are still allowed onto the island to see the farmhouse he renovated with driftwood, and walk the paths and clifftops he knew and loved so well.

  • While you’re in the area: Tintern Abbey near Chepstow is well worth a visit – a place that inspired both the poet William Wordsworth and painter J.M.W. Turner
  • So too is St. David’s Head, where Iron Age farmers left behind traces of their presence for generations to see at Warrior’s Dyke; and Arthur’s Quoit, a huge slab of stone said to have been thrown by the legendary king from a nearby hill, and which today is held in place by a solitary, upright piece of rock.

Modern-day archeologists believe it to be the capstone of a burial chamber that may date back some 5,500 years.

  • Chepstow Castle, founded by William the Conqueror’s contemporary William Fitzosbern within a year of the Battle of Hastings, incorporates the oldest surviving Norman fortification in the whole of Britain.

Perched high above the banks of the River Wye, Chepstow - now superbly-preseved, grade one listed ruins – was probably the very first stone castle in the country.

There are some holiday regions around the world which are jam-packed with exciting nightlife, lively activities and ultra-modern hotels. They attract those who are looking for a little white knuckle devilment amid a wild crowd of revelers, and usually feature plenty of 24/7 action to keep the party atmosphere going from the moment the tourists arrive until the second they decide to pack up and go home.

But of course, this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Millions of travellers prefer to find locations which offer a more tranquil way of life, surrounded by beautiful scenery and with plenty of peace and quiet thrown in. For them, one of the most welcoming destinations of all is located in Eastern England, and it remains one of those places in which time appears to have, if not stood still, been meandering along in a sedate manner for many decades.

The Norfolk Broads isn’t a hidden gem or a closely-guarded secret, it’s a vibrant and extremely popular tourist destination that attracts visitors from all over the world. It’s a location that is something of a rarity in the modern world; somewhere which offers tourists all the up to date facilities that contribute to a wonderful holiday, but in a quiet and understated way that underlines something that East Anglian people have known for centuries – that life is not a race.

Smell the flowers, taste the coffee, enjoy the scenery

Dotted throughout the area are picturesque villages and hamlets that would not look out of place on a chocolate box, and which have changed little over the passing years. The Broads themselves are waterways that provide boat-users with a golden opportunity to soak up some truly spectacular scenery at a pleasantly slow place. Locations such as Horning and Ranworth are stunning, and have become popular bases for tourists from across the globe.

The local pubs and restaurants offer visitors an old-fashioned warm welcome from the moment they arrive. There are plenty to choose from, providing a wonderful selection of Norfolk beers and of course a superb choice of freshly-cooked food. Cromer, a town that’s on the coast to the north of the region, is famous all over the world for the quality of its crab, so be sure to give it a try.

As you might expect from an area that’s well-known for its slow pace, driving around the Norfolk Broads isn’t suitable for boy racers. The roads are fine and allow for easy passage between locations, but you should expect to take it at a leisurely rate. After all, there is some wonderful scenery to take in along the way and, of course, it really isn’t a race!

Lake Garda holidays are perfect for the entire family. Whether you want a romantic weekend away or a fun family-friendly holiday, there is something for everyone. As the largest lake of Italy, Lake Garda offers spectacular scenery and breath-taking views of the nearby Alpine mountains. The shores of the lake are surrounded by lovely groves of olive and lemon trees, as well as beautiful rows of flowers. While the scenery is one of the most captivating aspects of Lake Garda, there are also plenty of things to do.

Camping at Lake Garda

One of the best ways to experience the beauty of Lake Garda is to camp on the lake. There are numerous campsites such as those offered by Eurocamp and Keycamp, which are situated right on the edge of the lake. You can simply step out of your tent and head to the beach for a swim whilst camping at Lake Garda. Here are a few of some the best campsites near Lake Garda.

On the Lake: Fontanelle is a peaceful campsite that is set on the shores of the lake and is also close to some of the area’s main attractions. The facility is well-maintained and offers a swimming pool; fishing and a children’s play area.

Family-Friendly: While not situated directly on the lake, Altomincio Family Park is still close enough for travellers to easily visit the lake. This park is a popular choice amongst families with swimming pools, waterslides, boat trips, twelve playgrounds and a cinema.

Luxury Camping: SelectCamp Camping Weekend is a lovely campsite for both children and adults. The site offers something extra for those who like to camp in comfort. The luxurious lodge tents are spacious, and fully equipped with showers and toilets. On-site amenities include a laundry, swimming pool, children’s pool, Internet café, two playgrounds, satellite TV and a pizzeria.

There are many countries in the European Union which may lay their own claims to having the most spectacular scenery with some of the world’s most spectacularly positioned campsites to match. But when it comes down to facilities and organisation, the French campsites are the best in Europe if not the world for me.

Camping, France

In France, “le camping” is something of a religion. Families take everything but the kitchen sink to their favourite destinations – often setting up for a whole month of alfresco living.
Almost every commune has a “camping municipal” a publicly provided campsite – which are cheaper than the private ones and usually have excellent facilities. These can be particularly useful if you’re only staying for one or two nights as you travel around. A couple of good Vango sleeping bags and a cheap tent are all you’ll need any time between May and September.

Where you decide to go camping in France is entirely dependent on what you most love to do. France is a very diverse country with varied landscapes.

In the north, the coastline is rugged, while the south coast offers classic Mediterranean stretches of golden beaches.

Inland, the landscape is lush with landscapes carved by famous rivers such as the Loire and the Dordogne, whilst the Alps offer a mountainous landscape beloved by outdoor sports enthusiasts in every season for different reasons. You’ll need you best Merrell gear during any season here.

Also, the Vendée, Royan and the South-West along the Atlantic coast are perfect for family holidays camping in France. There are huge stretches of open sandy beach and the sea is perfect for swimming and water sports during the summer. Be warned, though, it can be exposed in these regions during the hottest months as the beaches are so open and the landscape generally flat.

Wherever you decide to camp in this magnificent and hugely varied country – you won’t be disappointed by the camping facilities.

Bon voyage!

The National Park Hohe Tauern was established in 1981 and is Austria’s first National Park. During the following decades the National Park developed into the largest nature reserve in Central Europe, with an area of over 1,834 km2. The National Park Hohe Tauern lands in the three provinces of Tyrol, Salzburg (biggest share) and Carinthia.

The National Park includes the Central Alps with the highest mountain ranges of Austria, including Mount Großglockner (3798 metres high) and Mount Großvenediger (3666 metres high). The “Großglockner Hochalpenstraße” is an alpine road to near the mountain top and offers spectacular scenery. On the way upwards (or downwards), several museums tell the story of its construction in the 1930ies (mostly to fight unemployment and support tourism), the ecology of the region and other aspects of the “Tauern” mountains.

The Großglockner Hochalpenstraße is Austria′s second most popular attraction after Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. Beyond this busy part of the park, there are plenty of areas that offer excellent hiking opportunities. The Krimml Waterfalls are another famous sight in the Hohe Tauern.
