The weather may be getting worst but if you can brave the cold and wet then it gives you the chance to enjoy nature at its very best. Britain’s wilderness beauty spots, gardens and wildlife hotspots can often be at their most dramatic and enchanting during the winter months, from the serenity of frozen lakes and the starkness of wintry forests to the spectacle of creatures great and small surviving in the cold, winter opens up a window of unique opportunity to experience days of invigorating and stunning landscapes. So don your waterproofs and warm clothes, here are five of the best natural attractions in Britain to enjoy while the weather is at its worst:

Eden Project, Cornwall, England

Ok, this one is a bit of a cheat as you’ll be able to whip off the winter woolies as soon as you step inside the giant Biome domes, which transport you into the humid climate of a tropical rainforest, surrounded by the flourishing plant life that thrives in such conditions. Plus, the outdoor gardens look stunning all year round as well.

Snowdonia National Park, North Wales

As the name suggests, the peaks of Snowdonia offer a snow-capped winter wonderland for much of the season. While the weather can be hostile at the highest peaks, choose a clear and calm winter day and you will enjoy spectacular views across the park while breathing in the fresh, crisp air. The mountains are dramatic and the scenery is awe-inspiring with walking routes to suit all abilities taking in the mountains, cliffs and coast, while hardy souls will be able to refresh with white water rafting or kayaking in the chilly waters.

Loch Ness, Scotland

The Scottish Highlands offer picturesque winter scenes more consistently than many other other areas of Britain, with a consistently cold and snowy climate throughout winter. It can be unforgiving if you’re not prepared, but if you wrap up warm then you will be rewarded with some of the most inspiring winter landscapes anywhere on earth. Loch Ness is the largest lake in Scotland and one of its most popular and it glistens in winter. Too deep to freeze over, you can still hire boats or enjoy trips on the loch during winter, giving you a unique perspective on the frosty surroundings and historic sights around the banks of the water, or catch it on a frosty morning to see mystical steam rising from the lake.

National Botanic Garden of Wales, Carmarthenshire, Wales

Another attraction where you can escape the cooler climate and enjoy Mediterranean temperatures inside the balmy glasshouse which offers flourishing greenery and flowers in a warm atmosphere throughout the year. The outdoor gardens are perfectly maintained during the winter too and still a beautiful sight, while the glass-like lakes are mesmerising in the freezing temperatures.

The New Forest, Hampshire, England

Walking through the historic New Forest you’ll be following in the footsteps of William I who used the forest as his private hunting ground back in the 11th century. Today you won’t come across many hunters, but you’ll hopefully encounter some tough local residents in the shape of the wild New Forest Ponies, which brave the chilly weather throughout the winter. A host of walks are available to enjoy the forest at its best throughout the winter and you’ll find plenty of pubs complete with log fires and local brews to help you warm up.

The stable temperature reaching 26 °C, humidity 80 percent, tropical plants and colorful butterflies. It is not Equatorial Africa, but the center of Vienna. In the Butterfly House, located in a complex of former emperor’s private gardens between Hofburg Palace and Vienna Opera, you can spend a few hours in the tropical rainforest and admire here more than one hundred kinds of exotic butterflies.

The Butterfly House is the perfect imitation of their natural environment, so they lay eggs here, pupate and turn into caterpillars and eventually became colored beauties, whose wings range can be in some cases up to 30 centimetres.

Butterfly House was built several years ago and now, on 280 m2, it is a home to about four hundred butterflies, that come from special farms in Thailand, Belize, Costa Rica or the Philippines.

Visitors can observe the entire butterfly life cycle. Information boards explaining what they eat, how they develop, or how long they live. The Butterfly House is suitable for both small kids and adults.

Practical Info

The Butterfly House is located in the heart of Vienna’s emperor’s private gardens, about 200 meters from the Vienna Opera. It is open all year round and the basic admission is €5,50. Parking is available at the Opera House.

For more information visit Official site of Butterfly House.

You may need to browse through some Vienna hotels if you would like to stay here and visit other great attractions in Vienna as well, as it is not possible to see all of them in one day.

The Giant aquarium in the city of Hradec Králové, Czech Republic, is located right in the heart of the city and offers to its visitors a direct contact with the tropical nature, relaxation and sport. Giant aquarium was opened already in 1998 as the first public aquarium in Central and Eastern Europe and now it is the largest freshwater aquarium in Europe.

You can see about 40 species of fish with a total number of more than 500. Enjoy a walk through an underwater tunnel and rainforest. If you are tired you can rest at Piranha Cafe – where you can freshen up while observing predatory piranhas. There is also available a family sport area with a ricochet court, sauna and gym, which offers active relaxation in privacy with your family.

In Giant Aquarium you have a unique opportunity to see tropical nature of South and Central America. In the first part of the tour, called AVE NATURA, you can see the exhibition which currently consists of a unique collection of skulls of exotic fish.

In the second part of the tour you get to the tropical rainforest, where you can learn what it means to stay in the tropics – a combination of heat and 85-90% humidity. Here you can admire the beauty of plants such as orchids, Bromelia or Tillandsia in amazing shapes and color diversity and in more than 150 species and varieties. The impression is enhanced by occasional tropical rain and artificial fog.

After passing through the forest you get to the bottom of freshwater tropical ponds with the fish community of South and Central America. Besides the fish that you can know from your home aquarium, you will find real rarities here. The most species belong to the family Cichlidae. You can see here a big, up to 90 cm long fish of the Colossoma Serrasalmidae weighing up to 23 Kg.

The total volume of the exhibition tank is 130 000 liters of water, which means the mass of 130 tons and for your idea it is a weight of about 40 elephant females. The aquarium is 5 meters long and 8 meters wide. The great view from the bottom of the pool is allowed by the tunnel of acrylic glass with a thickness of 6.5 cm, specially imported far from Japan.

Every Thursday afternoon you can see the unique fish feeding with divers in the tank.

The Giant Aquarium is open all year round (except of Mondays) from 9:00 to 18:00 and the basic admission is 120CZK (€5).
