Monastery of Kykkos – one of the wealthiest and best-known monasteries in Cyprus
Kykkos monastery is the richest and most famous monastery on the island of Cyprus. It is located in the western part of the Troodos Mountains and north of the town Milikouri. The monastery was founded in around 1100 and is built in Byzantine style. The monastery includes a large surrounding land. In the monastery there is an interesting collection of icons. Most valuable is the icon of the Virgin Mary, allegedly painted by the evangelist Apostle Luke. This icon is one of the last three surviving. Additional icons come from the Russian Orthodox churches.
