Heritage Open Days in Birmingham | United Kingdom
Every city has its secrets. And in the United Kingdom, cities from all over celebrate Heritage Open Days as a way to share their secret history with both residents and visitors by opening up buildings that are normally shut to the public. This can include stately home and castles, to factories, to city halls to temples and churches. And, of course, all of this is free of charge. This year, Birmingham has a lot of interesting sites on the list, plus some other events that will be perfect for families looking to learn more about the region.

Architectural Heritage
The Birmingham Conservation Trust has opened buildings in the past especially for special tours. Last year and the year before, the Coffin Fittings Works took visitors on a journey through the region’s industrial past. Historical sites aren’t the only buildings featured in the programme. If you’re more science-oriented in your interest in architecture, the Zero Carbon House is also registered to open for 2012. This house of the future meets Level 6 requirements for the UK Code for Sustainable Houses and is entirely carbon neutral. Plus, its interior design is out of this world.
A few sites also offer special interactive events to mark the day. Martineau Gardens and the Birmingham and District Beekeeping Association will be offering a chance to find out all about the craft of beekeeping. With the current plight of bees in today’s ecosystems, this crash course on beekeeping will be of interest from everyone to conservationists to handicrafters. On a similar note, last year Urban Harvest (https://www.urbanharvestbham.org/) also featured apple pressing and a crash course in Autumn fruits.
Getting Around
If you’re not entirely familiar with the city, there are still ways to get the most of Heritage Open Day. Local tour services, such as Birmingham Tours, often offer special tours for the day, which are great if you are unsure of the best route to take through the city. This way, you can get a look at the best of what the day has to offer without fiddling around with maps.
If this all sounds like the kind of event you’d travel for, be sure to book a Birmingham hotel soon! The Birmingham Heritage Open Day this year takes place September 8th through the 9th so there’s plenty of time to start planning a trip. You can check out the Heritage Open Days website for more information on what sites will be open; the announcements should start rolling in around the middle of July.
