Using Social Media To Get Travel Discounts
There is a lot of controversy over how useful social media is for marketing. I have “liked” many companies and organizations, but if my custom newsfeed becomes cluttered with updates from them, they are promptly removed. I’ve happily won things on facebook, and even though I enjoyed the product, I haven’t felt compelled to buy anything else from them. For people looking for deals on anything, there is a good chance you’ll find discount codes and special promotions through social media. Here is where to start, to find the best deals on flights, hotels, and car rentals.

I’m still getting the hang of using Twitter to actually send out info, but I do get a steady stream of tweets from people and companies I follow. The great thing is that you can organize the companies you follow into lists so you can check them when you are looking for travel, ignore them when you don’t need them. You can go to www.farecompare.com and enter the name of your home airport, click follow and it will take you to their twitter page for that airport. Follow it to receive tweets whenever the fares drop. A similar site called www.airfarewatchdog.com which is part of the TripAdvisor family of websites, also tweets about seat sales. Certainly, if you have an airline you use frequently, follow them so you will hear about sales right away. Find a huge directory of companies that tweet on www.wanderlisting.com/category. Search in twitter for deals by typing in specific terms like Seattle hotel deals. Hotels often tweet deals from their websites.
This one is simple, you need to like your favorite hotel pages, in fact, nearly every company in the travel industry has a page so go ahead and like any that are relevant to you and put them in a list.Watch for these companies to issue updates about seat sales, limited time offers, bonus points, and contests. Like the pages of any loyalty membership programs you belong to, so you don’t miss any great offers for extra points or mileage.
Sign in to www.trippy.com by using your facebook account and you will find yourself on a pinterest type site, dedicated to travel. You can follow well known travellers to see their feeds, create your own travel boards, and follow your facebook friends. Use the create a trip feature and get input from friends who have been there. You can even check rates and book your trip through trippy.
Another travel related social site is www.gogobot.com, and again, you can sign in with your facebook account to access travel tips from your peers or anybody who has been to the destination you are interested in. One of the best ways to save money is to get what you paid for, and reading reviews from recent customers is one way to make sure you don’t pay for a palace and end up in a dump.
Because Facebook already consumes too much of my time, I haven’t signed up for foursquare. From what I understand, it is another great source of information, and you should use it to do a search for anywhere you are headed to see if there are special offers or bonuses available for checking in through the website or app.
Forums
Often, when I do google searches for anything tech related, I find my answer in a forum discussion. There are some good travel forums. For motorcycle travel, I always read www.advrider.com because there are ride reports for absolutely everywhere with current information, deals and rip offs. You don’t necessarily have to join the forum to search, but if you have a question that hasn’t been answered you have to log in so you can ask. A good forum for frequent flyers is www.flyertalk.com. Here, you can find everything you need to know about using miles and credit card bonus points.
