The better thing to describe the country you’re living is to observe it from a different prospective. Only after you go outside your Home Country you can discover its features and its greatness. This is what happens to Emilia Romagna and Romagna Riviera (better known as Riviera Romagnola) in Italy: every time someone gets back home from Romagna, in particular Italian people, he discovers what a great place it was.

Emilia-Romagna is in the Northern Italy, placed between Lombardy and Tuscany and one of its boundaries is the Adriatic Sea. This Italian region is one of the most developed regions of Italy from different points of view such as economic, cultural, gastronomic and touristic. It’s in Emilia-Romagna where famous Italian brands such as Barilla, Maserati, Ferrari or Ducati have their headquarters. It’s in this region where Parmigiano is produced and wine such as San Giovese is created to enjoy every dinner. Moreover Emilia-Romagna is the region where the playful Riviera Romagnola is.

This coast is well known by Italian people for their weekend outdoors and as the perfect place to go if they want to have some fun. In fact here you can find many different coast cities one next to each other where the most famous are Rimini, Riccione, Bellaria-Igea Marina and Misano Adriatico. These cities offer a wide range of golden beaches, restaurants with typical dishes, events, good hotels and a lot of different options to live a wonderful holiday at every age following your passions.

Most of young people find in Riviera Romagnola the perfect place to take a holiday breakaway with sunbathing, nightlife in the most beautiful discotheques of Italy and a lot of live concerts for free in café or in public square. Sportive travelers can find the perfect place to visit the famous Imola and Misano circuits where celebrities such as Valentino Rossi trained and raced with their motorbikes. If they are not keen on motors they can benefit of wonderful bike itineraries to discover the green and characteristic backcountry and take the best photographs of Italy. Families can find in Riviera Romagnola a lot of services also on the beach to make the kids have fun in a safe place and parents have some relaxing hours in wellness centers or at the seaside.

On the other side all the Italian food lovers can taste the best of Italian dishes such as Piadina, tortellini, lasagna and tagliatelle made by traditional Sfogline (women who prepare pasta in the most traditional and Emilian way). Never forget that great Italian chef started their career here in Romagna to learn how to do great pasta just from flour and water.

Plan your holiday in Riviera Romagnola it’s also really convenient: this region is well known by Italians for the great hospitality that people have and all the hotels have a certain look and feel that makes you always feel like you’re in a top venue but paying a smart price. For this reason, if you plan your vacation in Riviera you can also screen some three stars hotels because most of them have a good mix of services for all the family, a private access to the beach and a staff that can speak English, French and German without problem and make you feel like you’re home. People here also have the tradition to make you discover the best corners of their cities and the history of it helping you to plan a daily itinerary based on your needs and hobbies.

Talking about the cost of fun you will also discover that Riviera Romagnola is cheaper than other Italian cities because here the cultural nightlife is something that hosts sometimes include in holiday packages or take in consideration seriously. In fact in July all the Riviera Romagnola cities every year organize a big event called Notte Rosa (Pink night) that take place simultaneously on a weekend. It’s a big party where all the “guests” wear a pink accessory to be part of it and celebrate all night long attending free concerts in every corner of the cities and have fun in all the shops, café of the coast and watching fireworks.

In wintertime Riviera Romagnola is particularly warm and can offer a lot of good places to taste great Italian food, museum to visit and many other activities to play sport or have a cultural trip.

If you take a trip to Riviera Romagnola or Emilia-Romagna you will come back with great memories and the feeling you discovered an old friend you can’t wait to see again.

Not long after we were married, my husband and I spent a romantic week in Venice.  It was so enchanting that I promised myself we would come back one day.  Little did I know that we’d be returning with two kids in tow.   We visited two cities and one island and found that it wasn’t difficult to find friendly and enjoyable places to take our little ones.  Here are our favorites:

Rome

No vacation with children is complete without a trip to the zoo.  The Bioparco is one of the finest zoos I’ve ever visited.  There is a stunning array of animals including amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.  My children were especially fond of the capybaras and the pygmy hippopotamus.  However, the Bioparco is more than just a zoo.  It’s also a botanical garden featuring many exotic plants from around the world.  There’s a sweet little train that runs throughout the zoo and gives tours.  It was a fun way to give our feet a break.

The Sistine Chapel may seem like an unusual place to take your children, but at four and seven, my children were both in awe of the impressive architecture and the stunning artwork.  As a former art nerd, I couldn’t help but tear up as I viewed Michelangelo’s frescos and Raphael’s tapestries.  No matter what your age, this beautiful chapel is well worth a visit.

It’s almost a requirement to visit ancient ruins when in Rome.  While the Colosseum might seem like the obvious choice, I recommend the Pantheon.   Built in 27 BC by Marcus Agrippa, the Pantheon was a temple for all the gods of ancient Rome.  When you enter the building, the first thing your eyes are drawn to is the massive cupola.  Despite its age, the Pantheon’s dome is still the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome.  The oculus opens into the sky allowing natural light (and sometime rain) to enter the building.  It is truly breathtaking.

Venice

The Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale) is an absolute must see in Venice.  I recommend taking a guided tour so you can get a detailed history of this magnificent palace.  My husband and I enjoyed the art and architecture while our children were most excited by the Bridge of Sighs and the prisons.

Take a relaxing ride in a gondola on the Grand Canal. It’s the best way to see the gorgeous architecture of Venice.  My son was so soothed by the water that he fell asleep in my arms!

The Lido di Venezia is a fabulous place to let your kids be kids.  They can play in the sand and surf while you and your partner enjoy a private beach hut.  Be sure to get some delicious gelato while you’re there!

Sicily

Ancient ruins aren’t just a Roman specialty.  The Temple of Concordia is amazingly preserved and the grounds are positively lovely.  Surrounded by olive and almond trees, there’s a real sense of serenity surrounding the ruins.  Local legend is that newlyweds who visit the temple on their wedding day will have a peaceful marriage.

The Museo Archeologico Regionale Eoliano was so entertaining that we spent four hours exploring its fascinating exhibits.   With artifacts spanning 5000 years, there is so much to see that it might seem overwhelming,  Take your time and look over all the exhibits, be sure to visit the church and climb the steps to see the dazzling view from the cliffs.

If you’re traveling in Sicily during the summer, a great way to beat the heat and see something endlessly captivating is to visit the Catacombs of St. John.  My daughter was so enthralled that it was all she would talk about for weeks afterward.  The tour is incredibly informative and the guide speaks English extremely well.  Although there are no bodies, photography is still prohibited.

Learn Italian in Rome with group language classes

Classes organized in group are one of the best ways to learn the Italian language in Rome. Besides the tutorial program. Schools in the capital are happy to provide administrative assistance with issues related to accommodation and local tours. For students who would like their relatives to take a visit it is possible to arrange thematic excursions for the whole family: food and wine tasting, culinary tradition, art gallery tours and more.
The classes are led in spacious rooms with a warm, cozy atmosphere. The groups are small enough to let each student practice and improve their spoken and written skills with native speaking teachers.

The Most Exciting City in the World

Rome offers its visitors an endless spectrum of cultural and social activities: museums, art galleries, churches, religious and archeological sites. Church of San Luigi dei Francesi located on Via Santa Giovanna, the Roman Empire Vatican Museum, the Pantheon building on the Piazza della Rotonda are just a few hidden gems to find in this monumental city.

For those who are looking for a party time, Rome offers a rich nightlife entertainment: bars, pubs and live music venues are spread all over city. Most night outdoor activities are concentrated in the downtown: the area around Piazza Navona and Via della Pace with its cafes and surrounding alleys. Another dynamic place is San Lorenzo at the location of the main university where the pubs are swarmed with young people, creating a lively and informal atmosphere.

During the summer, there are many open-air events such as concerts and music festivals. The evening will be incomplete, though, without enjoying some delicious ice cream in Rome’s finest restaurants, such as Dal Siciliano (Sicilian style) or the famous Gelateria Il Dolce Sorriso located on Via Arenula. To get the best of the Italian authentic cuisine, students can try Osteria del Cavaliere and enjoy a brunch with a salad buffet for a reasonable price.

More than just a language

Time spent in Rome accompanied by systematic group studying, will not only contribute to a successful language acquisition, but also expose the students to new cultural traditions and etiquette, which is a world of its own.
Taking a trip to Italy’s capital in order to learn is a great way to combine business and pleasure. Watching the city life outside the language class window will inspire anyone to keep on learning, and using the language on Rome streets will make it easier to absorb vocabulary and build confidence.

Make sure to include Parma in your next itinerary to Italy! This city, in the Emilia Romagna region in the North of the country has been made famous by its’ gastronomic exports, but has much more to offer than just fabulous food. We will get to the food a little later…

Parma has been around since Pre-Etruscan times, and was already an established area in the Bronze Age. The Roman colony was founded in 183BC, together with Modena. It has had a turbulent history, being occupied and destroyed many times before the latest damage the city suffered during the German occupation from 1943 to 1945, when several monuments were damaged by the Allied bombardment. However, Parma was relatively lucky to escape without widespread devastation and there are still a great number of monuments to be seen today. The city is also home to the oldest university in the world!

Parma and Architecture.

If you are fond of Art, Architecture and Culture, this is the city for you, and you will need at least 2-3 days to see all there is to admire, and also visit the world-famous opera house, the Teatro Regio. This is the home of Verdi and Toscanini, and opera lovers flock here to hear their favourites; the Opera season runs from about April to December, with a festival in October.

There is a lot of Art to be seen, if you keep reading this article you will find out all the Parma tourist attractions! The best place to start would probably be the Pilotta Palace in the historical centre of the town. This Palace now houses some of the most important collections in the city, including the National Gallery where you can see artwork by Correggio, Parmigianino, Leonardo, Tintoretto, van Dyck and many others. While you are there also visit the Bodoni Museum, home to everything to do with Printing and then move on to the Palatine Library to see amazing collections of old books. The Pilotta Palace also houses the Archaeological Museum, worth a visit if you are interested in old artifacts.

Next on your list should be the Piazza Duomo, where you can visit the 12th century Romanesque Cathedral, filled with renaissance art. Entrance is free and you can visit from 9 – 12.30 and 3 – 7 pm. Be sure to see the Assumption by Correggio in the central cupola.

After viewing the Duomo, walk to the close-by Baptistery, a combination of Romanesque and Gothic styles, and home to several frescoes dating from the 13th and 14th centuries.

There is another great art collection to be seen at the Court Villa of Mamiano where works by Rubens, Tizano, Goya, Monet, etc can be viewed.

Enough about the culture…I am sure you get the picture! Parma also offers great shopping! If you like antiques, head for the Borgo Nazario Sauro, a small winding road near the centre, where you can explore one antique dealer after the next. This is a great place to find something special to take home.

Parma and gourmet food.

Parma is known all over the world for its most famous exports, namely Prosciutto di Parma (Parma Ham) and Parmigiano Reggiano (Real Parmesan Cheese), and you really must try both of these and even take some home, but Parma also has several other gastronomic specialities that you should try, so look out for some of the following on restaurant menus: Anolini in Brodo – this is a dish of little pasta parcels filled with beef, Parmesan, poached in a delicious broth; it is a speciality of the town! Also try Tortelli di Erbetta, pasta filled with ricotta, Parmesan and spinach – quite delicious and good for vegetarians.

If you want to try your hand at some Parmesan cookery when you go home try and find the book: “Parma – A Capital of Italian Gastronomy” by Guilano Bugliali – it is fully of wonderful local recipes.

It is possible to go on a tour to see how Parma Ham and Parmesan are made, and you should not miss this experience to round off your visit to the city.

Picture the scene: it’s a scorching hot summer’s day in Abruzzo and the sun’s rays are beating down. You may be relaxing in your villa’s private garden with a cold refreshing drink in hand, and the kids are playing outside, but they’re getting more and more restless. What you need is a fun, outdoor activity that all the family can enjoy…something that will bring lots of laughter and smiling faces…what you need is a fun-filled day out to Aqualand!

Aqualand is a spectacular aqua park in Vasto that is perfect for all the family – adrenaline seekers, nature enthusiasts and sun worshippers alike! About 50 minutes drive from Villa Ducale in Abruzzo, it is ideally situated so you can visit when you have a day free, without having to plan in advance. This is especially convenient, as we would recommend you visit a water park on a fairly warm, sunny day to make the most of the water-fuelled fun.

For those of you that love the thrill of water slides, you will discover around a mile of slides at Aqualand, ranging from the terrifyingly-exciting Kamikaze vertical drop slide or the high speed hill slide where you can race to the finish against your family and friends, to the gentler ride along the slow-moving rapids. There are even a couple of mini slides especially for babies and younger children, so they too can enjoy the excitement of the water park.

Aqualand also offers 3,000 square metres of swimming pools to enjoy, including everyone’s favourite – the wave pool! There is even a whirlpool where you can sit amongst massaging bubbles, perfect for lifting any stress away. Isn’t that what holidays are for after all? So whether you want to ride the waves, have a relaxing swim or complete some lengths for a bit of exercise, there is a pool for you.

There are so many more attractions than just swimming pools and water slides to discover at Aqualand, however. For example, you can choose to watch a musical or dancing show at the Aqualand Theatre or take part in some sports and fitness, including the gym. There are also lots of wide open green spaces where you can enjoy a spot of sunbathing, reading a book or eating an ice-cream.

Another favourite attraction you will find at Aqualand is the petting farm. With many different animals including ponies, donkeys, rabbits and goats, the whole family, especially the younger children, will adore being able to pet the cute animals.

As you can imagine, at the end of a day out at Aqualand everyone will be feeling extremely tired after lots of laughter and exhilarating fun. And when the kids are fast asleep in bed early, you can enjoy a nice relaxing evening – that’s if you’re not fast asleep too!

Family vacations are the best part of the year. To spend time surrounded by the closest and most loved people in your life is something that can not be compared to any other experience. When there are kids in the family things can get a little tough. There is much to be planned and predicted and still the unexpected situations can not be fully avoided.

Children have special needs and expectations, and they have to be at least partly satisfied otherwise the vacation can turn into torture for everybody present. What can be interesting for you will probably be no big deal for the little ones and the opposite – children enjoy things in which you see no sense.

travel-from-toRome – the capital of Italy – is one great destination for visiting. There is almost no one in Europe and in the world that will not love to see this old and beautiful city. And the best part of the offer is that is as interesting for the children as it is for you with its numerous ruins and long stories about the past battles.

The Coliseum should be the first place to start with. It is one major monument, significant part of which is kept till today. Being one of the major buildings in the ancient Rome, it is still keeping the central position in the modern life of the capital. The Coliseum is situated in the heart of the city on the right bank of the river, crossing it, which is Tiber. This is good because you will not wander too much until you find it. It is almost fifty meters high so it is easily seen from most parts of the city. The children will love to jump in the wholes, where were the old corridors of the Coliseum or up and down the tribunes, forming very good for playing stairs.

Coloseum, Rome, Italy

The next stop can be the Fountain di Trevi – one unique piece of architecture. It is situated in the center of the city as well and is considered to be one of the most romantic places in the planet. It may bring you back to the memories of the beginning of your life as family and wake-up sweet memories for great moments in your life. It is interesting with the combination of details and ornaments in its architecture. The original time of its building is going back to the Baroque times.

Saint Peter’s Square – the republic in the republic – this in one part of Rome which will leave both you and your children with wide open eyes and mouth. On the way to the incredible Vatican you can do some shopping or stop at the numerous restaurants and bars for a rest. The city of the Pope inside will offer many nice spots for observing like the statues of the saints, with you will see wherever you look. St. Patrick’s Basilica is one point of interest inside the square which deserves special attention. Leave some time to visit the Vatican museum, which is situated just adjacent to the Basilica.

Last children can see the ruins of the Roman forum. It is close to the Coliseum and the complex of the forum consists of several smaller and bigger monuments. Former center of the political life of the city, today this is a venue for long walks, observation and endless games for the kids, who can run up and down and hide in the numerous places, which will seem good for this purpose.

Tuscany is rich in heritage, just like the rest of Italy. Its rolling, beautiful landscapes covered in fields make it one of the most attractive spots for holiday apartments in Italy. Resisting an Italian apartment holiday in such a gorgeous place, with so much to see and do, is nearly impossible.

If, however, you are stuck for things to do, we’ve prepared this little guide on what is there to do in Tuscany, to help you make the most of your holiday.

Crete Senesi area, Tuscany, Italy
Crete Senesi area, Tuscany, Italy

If you’re interested in history, you can hardly go wrong. Tuscany is the home of some of Italian’s most beautiful historic cities. Florence, Siena, and Pisa are all located in the heart of Tuscany. Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance, is one of the most visited cities in the world and is home to some incredible art and architecture. There is so much to see and do there that it could take up pages by itself; whether you’re looking for the incredible sculpture of Michelangelo or want to spot some fashionable designs, Florence is an excellent choice.

David by Michelangelo in Florence, Tuscany, Italy

You also simply can’t miss the Leaning Tower of Pisa, one of the trademark images of Italy. Despite the fact that the tower is lopsided, you can still climb right up to the top and look at the nearby city and landscapes. The tower’s lean is stable, making it safe for you to enjoy its famous slant and the view of one of Italy’s many beautiful cities.

If history, art and architecture don’t really suit you, there is still plenty to do. Hiking and walking are both great activities; you can go on a day’s hike to mountains just on the edge of this beautiful region, or walk along the rolling farmland. There are a number of cycling tours, both mountain biking on those same peaks or leisurely bike rides through the countryside.

Shop in San Gimignano, Tuscany, Italy

Finally, if neither of those are your style and you’re seeking pure relaxation, there is plenty of that to be had in a Tuscan villa in Italy. You might choose to enjoy a wine tasting in Chianti or spend your evenings enjoying delicious local food in a series of cafes near your villa. With an abundance of local markets, you’ll find plenty to cook yourself in addition to enjoying elsewhere.

Don’t forget the shopping either; in addition to the shopping destinations in the city centres, you’ll find quite a few outlet shops to net bargains on Italian goods. Moreover, there are quite a few hand-crafted products that you can only get in Tuscany.

Tell us, what do you look forward to most from a Tuscan holiday?

The fancy restaurants, the gondola ride, the evening sky, the museums, the cobbled streets, the square, the cathedral, and almost everything about the place spells of romance. However, do you know it is also the best spot where you can find unique souvenir items to cherish? Look at the following list and try to grab one for yourself or your loved ones before going back home.

Velvet

You may not need too many yards of this fine clothing, but discovering Antica Tessitura di Luigi Bevilacqua in the District of Santa Croce will enchant you with its velvet and damask produce. Let its luxurious texture adorn your chairs and footstools and bring the elegance of Italy to your home.

The Witches Mirror

This item may have been influenced by the Medieval Period when witches were believed to have roam Europe. You will find this crafted by an artisan in the Dorsoduro District. Find him and be amazed by the convex mirrors that transfix the images of those who gaze at it.

Original Venetian Beads

Do not be tricked by mass produced beads that are sold cheaply in souvenir shops. Go for the real beads of glass by visiting Anticlea Antiquatario at calle San Provolo or Paropomisa at Frezzeria, San Marco. Be more charming and the storeowner may consider showing you a glimpse of their own private collection, a rare treat given to those who are patient enough to look for the best Venetian beads in the region.

Featherweight Glasses

Technology may have improved over the decade, but the world’s lightest eyeglasses are made and created at Micromega in Venice. This would be quite a gift for those wearing eyeglasses and you will value it more since it is created by no other than Roberto Carlon, a popular and only creator of feather-weight titanium frames.

Venetian Books

Amazon and Ebay may have given opportunities for people to purchase books online, but classic guidebooks and Venice themed volumes of readings can only be purchased at specialist bookshops in Venice like Linea d’Acqua, Mare di Carta, and Libreria Acqua Alta.

It would require you to do a couple of walks and a few conversations with the locales before you find these shops; but you can always check the addresses online and find their stores addresses. If you have a friend knowledgeable of the area, then it would be a breeze finding these stores. Moreover, you may even find interesting places that are rarely explored by tourists because it is less known to the public.

Have you thought of the places you will like to visit in Italy this holiday? There is a lot to see and things to do there with suitable accommodations like villas in Tuscany making the stay particularly pleasant. Let’s explore what Italy has to offer.

Consider Venice

If there is a city you should not miss when in Italy, it’s Venice! Mixing up at one of Piazza San Marco cafes for a foretaste of Venice’s design as well as the sea is the first thing to do before you go ahead to Basilica San Marco, Rialto Bridge and the Doge’s Palace. If you are an art lover, head straight to Peggy Guggenheim Collection to see some contemporary paintings from the 20th century. Wrap it up with a Gondola ride or go to a famous Carnevale, if you will be in Italy in February.

What about Milan?

What do you know about Milan? Are you aware of the fact that it is the home of the world’s largest Gothic cathedral, the Duomo of Milan? Not interested in cathedrals? Then you should be in a park or in a museum, such as Castello Sforzesco, to see ancient musical instruments, or the city’s famous archaeology museum, which is filled with artifacts from the pre-historical era. La Scala Opera House and Museum is not only a tribute to Opera, but it is also a formidable piece of architecture. Daily guided tours in many languages are offered.

… And the capital city, Rome?

When in Rome, you will have an opportunity to see the many beautiful monuments, old ruins, and historic architecture, which are what so many are fascinated by. Also, do not forget to pay a visit a Vatican – the Pope’s residence has much to offer and you are sure to be impressed with some artistic works by Michelangelo.

Val Camonica is a spectacular valley, located in eastern Lombardy, and one of the largest valleys of the central Alps. This beautiful Italian area is renowned for many things; ancient military history, nobility and industry, and even how fertile its land is! However industry and rich soil isn’t the entirety of the hidden treasure in Val Camonica’s chest; it has another jewel in its crown.

Val Camonica stretches for almost 90 kilometres, and scattered over hundreds of locations on both sides of this expansive valley are the world’s greatest collections of prehistoric rock drawings. This UNESCO World Heritage Site gives us artistic insight into the culture, pastimes, and interests of the ancient world.

The Great Gallery

The Valley lays claim to the most extensive collection of prehistoric petroglyphs on Earth; a rather impressive trophy for a rural region in the Alpine mountains of Italy!

It would seem that the inhabitants of this particular region, for reasons unknown, were intent on documentation and expression through the rock-based art-form. It is recorded that over 140,000 symbols and figures are carved into the Valley’s rocks. This staggering number is thought to have been achieved over a period of 8,000 years, and although UNESCO has formally recognised the previous number of incisions, it is thought that new discoveries raise the total somewhere between 250,000 and 300,000

Subjects of Superstition

The artistic works depict many different themes and subjects, providing an invaluable insight into the thoughts and minds of our creative ancestors.

The subjects of the rock drawings are diverse, and themes give us a glimpse into early agriculture, maps and constellations, as well as mysticism, war and magic! These early drawings are an unprecedented documentation of beliefs, traditions and triumphs.

In some cases, the figures and drawings seem to have been placed with no obvious order or logic, while others have a definite connection.

Visitors can see the showcase of impressive scenes of vibrant dances, historical hunts, ferocious fights, and mystical masterpieces that depict religious rites and ceremonies. These drawings seem to commemorate the culture of times past, however some of them are rather bizarre. The stranger drawings in this vast collection, through archaeologists’ analysis, have been described as less of documentation, and more an expression of ideas and early human thoughts.

A Piece of History

The history of the petroglyphs spans an extra-ordinate amount of time, and many different periods are documented. Making such a discovery would be any historian or archaeologist’s dream!

The first incisions give us a snapshot of a time long before even the Iron Age. While they give us extraordinary pictures of prehistoric customs, the drawings continue throughout history, and even into the modern day! It is thought the custom of rock drawing in this region carried over from generation to generation, even through the Roman and Medieval periods. Interestingly, most of the drawings have been created using similar techniques, even though the tools must have changed somewhat over the timeline.

One amazing scene shows one of the valley’s tribes initiating new females, at a time when they began to meet new people. Their isolation seems to end around 1000 BC, and it was at this time that their art was at its peak. Many battle scenes were carved during this period, and although the tribe was introduced to other members of society – their introductions appear to be rarely friendly!

Conclusion

If any one location has earned its place as a site worthy of world heritage, it is this one.

There is an unparalleled span of ancient and intricate artwork found throughout the rock drawings in Val Camonica. Thousands of people from the world over have already enjoyed this once in a lifetime experience, and have witnessed the site for themselves. Why not count yourself as one of them, and visit the amazing site today?
