The thing about hype is that perspective can often be lost about the subject in question. When it comes to the best holiday spots across Europe and those places which are great for sightseeing and exploring, the usual suspects are always at the top of the list.   However, when the leading destinations are those chosen by travellers who have experienced a particular location and all it has to offer, this can give others peace of mind that the trip to a certain city or place has been recommended by genuine people.

This is what is great about Trip Advisor’s Travellers’ Choice Destination Awards, which honour those destinations voted by millions of tourists across the world. So when it comes to planning a school trip or weekend away as a couple, you can check out the winners of the places which lie fairly closer to home.

The leading travel site has already published its results for 2013, with some surprises as well as the popular destinations featuring at the higher end of the European list.   If you have decided to travel somewhere in Europe this year to get a closer look at its history, culture and learn something from the expedition, it would be worth taking a look at the top 25 destinations in Europe – with the winner no shock to most people.

Paris was not only the leading destination in Europe, but it also pipped New York to the highest global accolade too. London had many reasons to be pleased with itself, taking the second spot in the European honours. A spokesperson for the site, Angus Struthers, explained: “These awards honour the world’s best destinations as decided by those judges that really matter – travellers themselves.

Now that the Jubilympics are over it’s vital that UK tourism continues to flourish so it’s great news that London is rated so highly among the world’s and Europe’s best destinations.”   It was good to know that the English capital had so much to offer tourists to these shores, with events like the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Games doing no harm in raising the country’s profile last year.

The top 10 for Europe also included the likes of Barcelona, Berlin and Prague, with Italian cities featuring quite heavily (Rome, Venice and Florence).

There is so much to learn about the nations around the UK, while a trip to one of these breath-taking cities is certainly affordable. Whether you choose to travel on your own, as a couple or as part of a larger group, you can decide on any of these places and not be disappointed.

See what makes France’s capital such an appealing destination for global travellers and enjoy the ideal Paris experience. Stroll along the Seine and take in famous attractions like the Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower, not forgetting to savour the fine exhibitions at the Louvre and explore the rich history of the place.

Alternatively, pick somewhere else on the list and find out why each country has its own distinctive charm and appeal to tourists. Use this guide as a starting point and explore Europe even further whatever your age or interests.

Barcelona is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and it is renowned for having beautiful architecture and vibrant local culture. It is certainly somewhere that every single person should try to visit, but it is admittedly one of the most expensive destinations in Europe. That does not mean that it is out of your budget. Let’s look at how it is possible to visit Barcelona on low budget.

Plaza España, Barcelona, Spain

Travel & Accommodation

As with most trips, the lion’s share of your budget will probably go on flights, airport transfers and accommodation, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Whenever I am planning a trip, my first task is to check out what I have in terms of air miles and rewards cards. If I can get  flight for free, or at least for a discounted price, then that frees up money to spend once I reach my destination!

When it comes to hotel accommodation in Barcelona prices are based on style rather than location, so if you are happy to choose more basic accommodation then it is possible to find something fairly central for a reasonable price. One great tip is to select a hotel which usually caters to business travellers, if you stay here over the weekend or during a holiday than you will get a cheaper rate.

If you are looking for absolute rock bottom pricing then Barcelona also has its fair share of hostels if you are happy to sleep dormitory style and share a bathroom with several strangers.

Finding Low Cost Activities

One of the main things that people always connect with Barcelona is the arts, and culture in general. When we hear ‘culture’ we often think it is going to be expensive, but that is not always the case! One of the most famous sights in Barcelona is Las Ramblas. Perhaps the most famous street in all of Spain, this 1.2km long boulevard runs directly through the heart of the city.

Las Ramblas, Barcelona, Spain
Las Ramblas, Barcelona, Spain by Oh-Barcelona.com

Not only is Las Ramblas a bustling shopping area, but you will be able to see the famous ‘living statues’ and other forms of street entertainment. The living statues are often painted from head to toe in silver, gold, bronze or stone effects. You will be astounded at how still they are, with the best barely breathing or moving their eyes – until that is a tourist drops a coin in their hat or bucket, then they will come to life and offer performances ranging from mime and dance to music and singing. This is fantastic entertainment for just a few euros!

In addition to the lively entertainment offered on Las Ramblas, you will find that many of the museums and galleries are free to visit, or hold regular open days. Some of the places to check out include Museu Picasso which is free on the first Sunday of each month, Museu de la Xocolata (Chocolate Museum) which offers free admission on the first Monday of the month and the Centre de Cultura Contemprania de Barcelona which is free on the first Wednesday of the month. As you can see, it is certainly better to visit Barcelona early in the month!

Another famous tourist attraction is the Magic Fountain at Montjuic, which offers a breathtaking display of colour, lights, music and movement. The Magic Fountain has shows scheduled Thursday through Sunday all year round and is a must see when visiting Barcelona.

In conclusion, I think that it is clear that a budget trip to Barcelona is certainly possible. Once you have secured flights and accommodation, there are plenty of free activities to enjoy. I have listed enough free activities to keep you busy for 5 days in this article alone, which will free up your cash for more expensive activities such as Barcelona Zoo or Camp Nou Stadium. Barcelona is beautiful and now you can enjoy it without breaking the bank.

Few places compare to Europe for history, architecture, cuisine and fabulous scenery. We take a whirlwind tour around Europe, looking at five great destinations that should definitely be on your picking list- you’ll barely be able to contain your excitement when waiting in the airport lounge.

Bordeaux, SW France

Enter the mediaeval turreted gates of Bordeaux and explore the wonderful Parisian-style architecture and winding streets lined with small shops, cafés and historic attractions. Discover the Grosse Cloche, a massive bell hanging in the 13th century Saint-Eloi Gateway above the Astronomical Clock. Stroll the waterfront beside the broad Garonne River, and see the grand buildings on the Place du Palais, cleverly reflected in the Mirror d’Eau water feature.

In contrast, take a tour into the surrounding countryside of Aquitaine and sample full-bodied Bordeaux wines at their famous vineyards.

Munich, Bavaria

Even if you miss Oktoberfest in Munich, which confusingly is now held in September, the city still makes a splendid place to visit. Take a guided tour of the attractions, including the splendid Gothic Neues Rathaus on Marienplatz. Churches, museums, shopping, parks and palaces will fill your day, and if you find yourself in the English Gardens, watch the brave river surfers riding the manmade wave beneath the bridge on the River Eisbach. In the evening, join the lively Bavarian entertainment and bratwurst cuisine at the local Brauhaus.

Bad Gasteim, Austria

A visit to Bad Gasteim in the low non-ski season means first class hotel rooms are cheap, the crowds are gone and you are left to enjoy the delights of this beautiful Alpine valley. Divided by a rushing waterfall, the town has beautiful Belle Époque architecture left over from its days as a popular spa town. Small shops, gorgeous scenery and live music from bands almost every evening add to the charm of your stay.

Just outside the town there are opportunities for lakeside strolls, walks through alpine meadows, bread making on the farm, guided walking tours around Dorfgasteim, hot springs and cheese making demonstrations. The nearby archery course is great fun, shooting life-size target animals along a beautiful footpath enhanced by its woodland setting and banks of edelweiss.

Lake Maggiore, Italy

Make your luxury holiday base in Locarno, a lively city at the north end of Lake Maggiore, just inside the Swiss border. Explore the castle, walk in the foothills of the Alps and pop across the border into Italy.

In the heat of summer, nothing beats a day trip on the famous Vigezzina and Centovallina Railway, returning via a cruise on Lake Maggiore. Catch the slow but scenic train to Domodossola, then the Express train through the Italian countryside to Stresa, on the shores of Lake Maggiore.

Enjoy lunch overlooking the lake in Stresa, or perhaps explore the beautiful furnished palazzo and tiered gardens at Isola Bella before boarding the lake ferry. Sit at the stern and see an endless parade of old villas, churches, chateaux and gardens as the ferry zigzags its way back up the lake, calling in at countless picturesque lakeside villages. Three hours later you will find yourself back in Locarno, just in time for dinner!

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is a wonderful city where you can combine cultural attractions and museums with time at the beach. With 2000 years of history, the Old Town with its cathedral and famous pedestrianized Las Ramblas is a great place to start. The unfinished Sagrada Familia is well worth a visit, the pièce de résistance of architect Antoni Gaudi, who was responsible for many other masterpieces around the city. Base yourself in a hotel overlooking the port and beach at Barceloneta for the best of both worlds!

Sometimes choosing a holiday to please everyone can prove a mean feat; the kids scream for beach fun, your partner yearns for culture and romance, and your friends crave non-stop partying in a metropolitan concrete jungle. So, how can you keep everyone happy? By choosing a holiday that rolls all of that into one, plus a whole lot more!

Check out our top picks for combining city breaks with beach holidays.

Barcelona | Spain

A popular choice for combining a metropolitan city feel with Catalonian sunshine, Barcelona offers everything from golden sands and great food to city living and culture. Every summer, millions of sun-worshippers flock to Barcelona’s beaches to soak up some Mediterranean sun with Platja de la Nova Icaria proving the most popular, probably due to its accompanying beach bars. For a calmer experience, sink your toes into the sands at the Port Olimpic Marina or if you’re into bathing au naturel, try the nudist beach at Platja de la Mar Bella.

For a break from the sands soak up some culture; visit the La Sagrada church, an intricately detailed building that is still being built 100 years after it was started. Head to bustling Las Ramblas for thriving streets, packed full of street artists and tarot readers, as well as La Boqueria food market. If you want to break free from the tourist areas, hire a car and head to Carrer de la Riera Baixa and explore quirky vintage shops and great bars.

Dubrovnik | Croatia

Dubrovnik is rapidly becoming as popular as Barcelona and it’s not hard to see why; urban tradition and seaside charm seem to go down pretty well with holidaymakers.
Protected by medieval walls the city’s white sandy beaches, marbled streets and impressive churches offer culture in abundance. If you’ve got bags of energy slip into a kayak (see https://www.adriatickayaktours.com) and take a tour of the city walls, or enjoy unrivalled views whilst the Adriatic laps at your feet on the beach.

Nice | France

If you fancy a holiday that resembles a postcard then the French city of Nice won’t disappoint. There are plenty of pebble beaches drenched in Mediterranean sun, as well as 15 private beaches complete with changing rooms and loungers along with bars and restaurants. When you’ve perfected your tan get lost amongst Nice’s winding streets and stumble across Roman ruins in the old town. Art buffs will be impressed by the works of Monet, Warhol and more in the city’s art museums and music lovers will adore getting in the groove as the sun goes down on this French delight.

Venice | Italy

When most people think of Venice they picture winding alleys and canals filled with gondolas, but guess what? Venice has beaches too! In fact, more than half of the Adriatic side of Venice is made up of fine, sandy beaches, and the best part? These beaches are such a well-kept secret that whilst couples enjoy romantic gondola rides you can be enjoy the beach in privacy!

Be quick! Experts predict that this floating city will have sunk below sea level in just 70 years.

So, whether you are a beach bum or a city slicker, it doesn’t matter. These European beauties combine it all and now all you need to do is pick one!

Starting your cruise from Spain or stopping off on your voyage in the Mediterranean country has become increasingly popular with the ever growing and expanding cruise market. Even given the economic crises that the EU finds itself in, and this is especially true of a country such as Spain which suffers more than most, the cruise and holiday market has not suffered much from this downturn. Since 2006 the annual amount of revenue that holidaymakers have generated in the Iberian Peninsula has risen by 54% to a whopping 36.7 billion Euro’s. Some 5 million cruise passengers pass through the country every year and the vast majority of these are foreigner cruise goers from all over the world.

With this in mind then we need to examine why Spain has become so popular as a cruise destination? Essentially the country acts as a very useful and strategic gateway to the rest of Europe and Africa as well. A cruise starting from Spain can easily navigate its way through the rest of Europe from other Mediterranean countries such as Italy and Greece to the likes of Germany and France and everything in between. Indeed, many cruises that start off from one of the many ports in the country will often take in the top of North Africa too while Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt very popular destinations for Spanish cruises.

Normally your Spanish cruise will begin to stop off at one of the 3 main ports in the country such as Malaga, Barcelona or Valencia however most itinerary’s will take in at least one of the islands as well with Ibiza or Mallorca very close by or, if you are heading to North Africa, then Tenerife with its volcano’s and scarred landscape is another popular destination.

Gibraltar is a stopping destination that does not usually feature on many cruise routes but is worth a visit all the same. The ‘rock’ has been a point of contention between Spain and the UK for a while now but it is a recommended stop off point for cruises in the area. A cable car ride to the top of the rock can produce amazing views of the surrounding area and the Strait of Gibraltar and Mediterranean in particular. St. Michael’s Cave, 2 caves in actual fact, is also an attraction. The limestone caves have some fantastic natural beauty and a rich history as ‘cave art’ was recently discovered there dating back some 15,000 years.

A cruise from Spain can last anywhere from 1 week to over a month. A week long or 10 day cruise might see you start from Barcelona, take in one of the islands such as Mallorca before taking off to the tip of North Africa and perhaps at least one other Mediterranean country such as Italy as well. A month long cruise could see you go as far as Brazil or South America while also enjoying everything that Spain has to offer from culture in Barcelona to sunny beaches in the Costa Del Sol. A cruise that takes in Spain is as interesting as it is diverse and because the country features so many different climates, activities, cultural heritages and customs then it is one country that it is very difficult to get bored of.

If there is anything that says ‘understated luxury’ better than summer in the Mediterranean, then the people who summer there have yet to be informed. A treasure trove of art, culture, history both ancient and modern, fabulous foodie feasts, delectable wines, and long hot summers, have made this part of the world one of the most popular places to visit. The sheer volume of people who head to the shores of the Mediterranean do not, however, diminish its many charms, for they are as much a part of the experience as pizza, cappuccino, and ancient ruins.

1) Barcelona

Barcelona is the jewel in Spain’s Mediterranean crown. The capital of the country’s Catalonia region, the city blends cultural modernity and a traditional outlook seamlessly. Wandering the city streets, it is entirely possible to get lost in the meandering cobble-stoned avenues, before turning a corner and being presented with a piece of classic and iconic architecture from the city’s most famous son, Gaudi. This isn’t just a culture vulture’s city, however, as Barcelona has perfected the art of beach living. The city stretches right down to the sea, where lounging Spaniards spend their weekends lapping up the sun and sipping on sangria.

2) Sorrento and Capri

On Italy’s Mediterranean coast, the small, perfectly-formed town of Sorrento and the equally desirable island of Capri form the Mediterranean ideal. Set away from the metropolitan madness of nearby Naples, Sorrento and Capri provide oases of calm on the shores of the Mediterranean. From the streets of Sorrento, you can stare in wonder out over the Bay of Naples towards the awe-inspiring and slightly ominous sight of Mount Vesuvius and indulge fully in the Southern Italian lifestyle, which includes wine at lunchtime, an evening gelato, and plenty of people watching. Capri is an island idyll, with the famous Grotta Azzurra capping off its reputation as an ideal holiday destination. Feeling that you’re living the life of luxury isn’t hard in Capri; the place was made for it.

3) Cannes

There are plenty of famous names along the French Riviera, each one as attractive and appealing as the next; St Tropez, Nice, Montpellier, Antibes are just a few. But Cannes is the crème de la crème, with its reputation for famous faces, the film festival, and pampered lifestyles. There’s more to Cannes than chilled wine on the beachfront, however; with a long history of perfume-making, a visit to the town wouldn’t be complete without taking in the fragrant air of the Molinard parfumerie, which dates back to 1849.

4) Malta

Malta provides the perfect island escape in the Mediterranean. Away from it all, in its own little world, Malta typifies what is best about the Mediterranean. Long summers, a fascinating history, and a laid-back lifestyle have all combined to make this a most desirable holiday destination. The island is a cultural mix of North African, European, Arabian and Sicilian influences, making Malta a heady, atmospheric place to spend time. It also has a rich and fascinating history, with some of the oldest free-standing structures in Europe calling the island home, as well as the Ggantija Temples, which are thought to be the oldest known religious buildings, possibly in the world.

5) Corfu

One of Greece’s most famous islands, Corfu still has the languid, Mediterranean attitude that has made it so popular with holidaymakers for so long. Corfu is Greece’s garden, the greenest of the country’s many islands, and it has attracted many famous faces and literary homages in the past – not least of which are Homer’s The Odyssey and Shakespeare’s The Tempest. With its cypress trees, olive groves, and wild flowers in the spring, Corfu is a delightful Mediterranean paradise.

The Mediterranean is a special place to visit whatever the time of year, and with its vast variety of towns, villages, islands, and cities, no two places are the same. There are plenty of Europe tours that focus on these wonderful destinations around the Mediterranean, and whichever one you pick, you can be sure that every single one remains beguiling, bewitching, and simply beautiful.

SPAIN, which is the most varied of all the countries in Europe, pays homage to its history, bullfighting agenda, hedonism, holiday villas, and most especially, ARTS. No other nation in the world produces marvel in their masterpieces like it does – from traditional to contemporary. This country is full of life, culture, and credence. People say that stepping into its realm brings you to another universe as its land beyond the mountains has a character and personality so stunningly different, where the sun beats down mercilessly.

Spanish art is so distinct. It is characterised on experimented pictorial techniques and effects on light and textures. And this kind of exploratory trend finds its roots in painters such as Joaquin Mir and Casas who represent the predecessors of impressionists. Aside from this eccentric style, came the rise of avant –garde led by Pablo Picasso which made blares and hullabaloos. Later then, pop art, minimalism, modern art installations, and abstract expressionism crowded the European Art scene.

Barcelona, as Spain’s most cosmopolitan city and one of the Mediterranean’s busiest ports, also boasts in their arts competence, as shown in their numerous galleries and museums, amidst Europe’s heavy concentration on hi-tech and biomedical business. The racing heart of Barcelona never skipped a bit. Here’s the top 5 art museums/ galleries that Barcelona prides itself on:

  1. Picasso Museum – This museum is located in Malaga City. It was inaugurated on the 27th of October 2003 by the King and Queen of Spain. And because Picasso’s works are too many to display, some are queued outside the museum’s narrow pedestrian for free public appreciation. Alongside the building are bookshops and cafés – all specialising in Picasso’s modern arts.
  2. Joan Miro Foundation – This opened to the public on the 10th of June, 1975. It has been dedicated to artists who saw the opportunity to promote and publicise their works. During when Spanish art was minimal, the Foundation conveyed a different yet refreshingly and dynamic concept of art.
  3. Tàpies Foundation – This foundation is not only an avenue for arts but for education and research as well.  It seeks to protect and distribute all the museum’s significant documents and material, as well as its educational resources so it could help facilitate information about Antoni Tàpies’ contemporary works.
  4. Mies Van der Rohe Pavillon – Exhibitions and lectures are hosted in this foundation. Aside from disseminating knowledge about its designer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, it also features modern and contemporary architecture in general from either a historical or present-day point of view.
  5. Catalan National Art Museum (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya) – It is the national museum of Catalan visual art. It is especially noteworthy for its outstanding collection of Romanesque church paintings, and Catalan arts which includes: 1) Romanesque art; 2) Gothic art; 3) Renaissance and Baroque art; and 4) Modern art.

These are just among the many art wonders of Barcelona where one can visit, enjoy, and relive once again the historical impression set by its artists. Let me quote Octavio Paz’ statement: “Art is an invention of aesthetics, which in turn is an invention of philosophers… What we call art is a game.”

I am still deciding where to go for my upcoming trip. It will be my first time to visit Spain! Many people would probably choose Madrid or Barcelona without thinking of any other possibilities, but I am an active hiker and might enjoy going somewhere different. After mulling over the question for the last couple of months, I decided to go see the Sierra Nevada. It’s a group of mountains at the very bottom of Spain.

I think April will be a good time, before it gets too hot. The closest major city is Granada. I’ll be flying there, maybe with a break in Barcelona. Granada looks to be stunningly beautiful. I am staying two nights in the city and it will probably be in the Parador de Granada, although the Hotel Casa 1800 Granada is supposed to be very picturesque.

From Granada I could head by bus to Capileira, which is a small town that sits at the foot of Mulhacén, the tallest mountain in Spain. There is a Microbus service there. It takes travelers up the mountain on days with good weather. It’s actually becoming a rather popular tourist destination, so I’m not concerned about it being too isolated. I’d rather walk up the mountain, though. Apparently it’s not that difficult and doesn’t require any climbing equipment, just normal hiking gear.

I could take the bus to Beas de Granada (east of Granada). There is a fantastic one-way walk that leads back into the center of Granada. It’s supposed to be one of the best hiking experiences to be had in the Sierra Nevada. The route is about 30 kilometers atop a broad ridge, which might be a little long for me. I’ve also been warned to hike this path in May at the latest due to the heat.

Another option is to travel in June or July. I could go from Granada to Trevélez (which is on the eastern side of Mulhacén) to climb the path to the Seven Lakes, but any earlier in the year and there’s too much snow. Most of the climb isn’t too difficult and I’ve heard that the waterfalls are amazing. It leads up to a place called the Seven Lakes (Siete Lagunas). I’m probably going to choose this one.

There’s actually quite a few other hikes, like a hard one called Vereda de la Estrella. I could also hike from Capileira to Trevélez, but not in winter. There’s so many choices!

One of the other great activities that you can do around the mountainous countryside of Spain is mountain biking. The hilly terrain and dry conditions lend themselves perfectly to this pursuit and there are no rules against doing this.

The Mediterranean has been a favourite travel destination for as far back as the history of man goes, and for very good reasons.  The climate is ideal, providing warmth and sunshine all year round for visitors from cold northern climates.  During the summer, the diverse landscapes scattered throughout the Med from the hills, vineyards and mountains to the enticing beaches encourage visitors from all over the world to visit to enjoy the pristine sands and serene water.  Here is a list of the top 5 Mediterranean holiday destinations that you should definitely visit at least once in your lifetime.

Barcelona

To start off experiencing the Mediterranean in a major city filled with action, fantastic shopping and dining, and a nightlife that is second to none, Barcelona is an ideal place.  During the day, there are many museums to experience filled with the rich history of Barcelona.  One of the most popular is the Barcelona FC Museum, dedicated to the incredibly popular football team – it is the second most visited museum in all of Spain!  At night, you can visit one of Barcelona’s many nightclubs and dance your cares away.

Carassonne

Carassonne in southern France should be on everyone’s list of places to visit when exploring the Mediterranean.  It is a thriving medieval Castle that is filled with Renaissance history.  As soon as you enter through the drawbridge, you will feel like you have stepped into a history book.  The best way to get the full Carassonne experience is to stay overnight so you can have the city essentially to yourself after the many tour groups have left.  Halloween is an especially great night to visit thanks to the house of terror they put on as well as other decorations.

The Algarve

The Algarve is the most popular holiday destination in Portugal and with good reason.  It is very safe, very welcoming, and is relatively cheap.  The beaches are also stunning and clean, which is made even more impressive by the fact that there are over 200km of beaches to enjoy.  English is widely spoken at most of the resorts as well.  If you love playing golf, then The Algarve is a perfect holiday destination as it is home to over 30 courses.  It may shock you to learn that the total population of The Algarve is under 500,000, yet the region receives over ten times that amount of tourists per year.

Crete

Crete is the largest Greek island by area and is an extremely popular holiday destination for tourists.  Every year, over 2 million visitors travel to Crete, the majority of them staying in the capital, Heraklion.  One of the biggest draws is of course the magnificent beaches, but also the tremendous nightlife which will give you plenty to do to fill your days as well as your nights.  If beaches and nightclubs aren’t really your thing, Crete also has some magnificent mountains that are ideal for hiking in.

Cefalu

Cefalu located in Sicily is a beachside village that has a very strong feeling of history.  The streets are all narrow and cobbled and barely provide enough room for a Smart Car to navigate.  Lining the streets are antique shops, craft shops and fruit and veg markets, all of which are worth a visit.  Relatively quiet compared to other destinations, you will be able to enjoy the water in Cefalu without the frantic pace of life in other destinations.  There are a lot of ancient buildings, such as the Cathedral of Cefalu that provide a great experience for tourists too.  Cefalu is also home to numerous bars and restaurants so you will never run out of things to see and do.

If you are planning on visiting the Med for the first time, look into staying at the La Manga Club.  A stay here is guaranteed to make you want to return time and time again.
