The history of the city and its monuments
The first mention of the town Bovec dates back to the 11th century. Perhaps the most valuable historical monument in the town of Bovec is the Church of St. Leonard from 15th century, which has recently been renovated. Other sights of the city were extensively damaged during the World War I. As the memory of this period there is a museum dedicated to objects of the World War I, situated right in the city centre.

Sports activities and excursions into the beautiful natural attractions
Bovec is mainly a winter resort but also an important starting point for many hiking trails leading trough the Julian Alps. A ski resort is situated on the slopes of Kanin mountain (2587). Even in summer the local lift is in operation. You shouldn’t miss a tour to the nearby waterfall Boka, which is – with its height of 1000 meters – one of the highest waterfalls in Slovenia. It is located 5.5 km from the town of Bovec. In summer you can additionally try here such as canoeing, rafting on the emerald-green Soča River, skydiving, horseback riding, playing tennis and fishing, or even hang-gliding from the Bovec airport.

Tourist information
There are many accommodation facilities in the town of Bovec. In addition to guest houses and hotels there is also a campsite available. You can use the post office, pharmacy, wellness center and ski services as well.

To Bovec you can get using air transport. The nearest international airport is located in Ljubljana. Another option is by bus or car. Train connections are not possible here.

In the Pyrénées Mountains, there are a number of glaciers which had been slowly receding for centuries. This continuously melting ice has resulted in the creation of the Grande Cascade de Gavarnie. It is considered to be one of the tallest waterfalls in France and even one of the largest in all of Europe. During the summer months, when the melting of the glaciers increases, several other waterfalls form nearby.

The receding glaciers feed the nearby Spanish Lake of Lago Helago. This particular Lake has no surface outflow such as a stream, river or creek. Instead, the glacial waters of the lake seep into the ground before making their way to the waterfall. As a result, the unique experience afforded to one who visits the Grande Cascade de Gavarnie is definitely a rewarding one.

It is important to point out, that while many popular waterfalls throughout Europe are now turned on and off at specific times of the year as a result of them being harnessed for hydroelectric power, the Grande Cascade de Gavarnie is not. The waterfall itself stays on year-round and while it is used as a source of hydroelectric power, the generators are well below the level of the falls.

The amazing geology and spectacular views afforded to one who visits the region only make the trip more enjoyable. Every year, countless visitors from all over Europe and the world make their way to the area just to view the Grande Cascade de Gavarnie as these waterfalls are definitely one of the finest examples of natural splendour in the world.

The waterfall itself travels a total distance of 380 meters from its highest point to the pool below. It is separated into three distinct stages of which the upper and lower stages feature a drop of just over 140 meters while the middle stage features a drop of 100 meters. The point at which the Krimmler Ache flows over the edge of the cliff is 1470 meters above sea level.

The Krimmler Ache which feeds the Krimml Waterfalls is a glacial stream which ranges between 20,000 cubic meters an hour during the summer months to only 500 cubic meters per hour during the winter months. It is also important to point out that back in 1987, the largest ever recorded flow of more than 600,000 cubic meters per hour was recorded; affording anyone who visited at the time one of the most awe-inspiring views imaginable.

After the water has fallen into the pool below, then makes its way out to the Salzach River which then flows into the Inn River before finally meeting up with the famous Danube River. Eventually all the waters that cascade over the edges of the Krimml Waterfalls find their way out into the Black Sea.

Tourism in the area can be dated back several hundred years. A number of password created between the upper and lower portions of the waterfall prior to the 1870s. In 1879, in order to improve panoramic view and access the region, the Austrian Alpine club for forth a lot of effort into developing the area in and around the Krimml Waterfalls. Today, close to a half 1 million people visit the falls every single year.
