Acireale – a place of the most beautiful carnival in Sicily | Italy

City of Acireale (Aciriali – in Sicilian), is located on the terraced slopes of volcanic origin, between the last foothills of Mount Etna and the Ionian coast, in the province of Catania. It has 52 000 inhabitants. It is well-known mainly for its thermal springs, also of volcanic origin, thanks to which a city grew up into the modern spa.

The main feature of the town is Acireale Cathedral. It dates from the 16th and 17th century, however it was rebuilt in the 18th century. The facade is from the 17th century, which is the work of Giambattista Basile and has a beautiful portal of marble and alabaster (17th century). The majestic interior has a dome and is richly decorated with frescoes (created in the 18th century).

The city’s heart is a Piazza del Duomo, where this cathedral is situated. There is also the Palazzo Comunale, which is building from the second half of the 17th century built in a typical Catalonian Baroque style. There is also a Basilica dei Santi Pietro e Paolo from the 17th century. It boasts a beautiful architectural design with ornamental decoration.

You should visit also the public gardens and Villa Belvedere. Here you can enjoy really a beautiful panoramic view of Mount Etna and the sea. You can then take a pleasant walk through beautiful scenery and exciting surroundings, along the steep slopes of The natural reserve La Timpa and get to a picturesque fishing village – Santa Maria la Scala.

Acireale is also known for a famous Carnival, which attracts people from around the world. It is considered the most beautiful carnival in Sicily. For 2012 it is planned from the 4th to 21st of February.

The city has two patrons – St. Venera (celebrated on the 26th of July) and St. Sebastian (celebrated on the 20th of January).

Montepulciano – a medieval and Renaissance hill town in Italy

Montepulciano is an Italian city situated in southern Tuscany. Today the town has about 14.000 inhabitants. It is located at an altitude of over 600 m and is built in the hills on a narrow limestone ridge. In the center of Montepulciano, you can visit many churches and Renaissance palaces, which were built with the participation of Florentine architect Antonio da Sangallo the Elder. The city is also famous for its local wine – Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which is one of the best wines in Tuscany.

Among the most valuable sights in Montepulciano you can find Sant’Agostino church or ancient gate Porta al Prato. On the Piazza Grande there is the Gothic palace Palazzo Comunale from 14th century. From its tower you can enjoy a beautiful view of the surroundings. Other palaces worth visiting are Palazzo Neri-Orselli, which is now a museum and a gallery, or the Palazzo del Monte Cantucci from 16th century. Not far from the center of the town you can visit a church of Santa Lucia. On the slope below the town of Montepulciano there is situated Renaissance pilgrim church of San Biagio, built by Antonio da Sangallo. In its interior you can see the original artistic decoration.

Modena – the capital of engines, Italy

The city of Modena can be found in the southern end of the Po River valley. While the history of the town goes back to the prehistoric era, it is mostly known as the home of the finest Italian sports cars. The Ferrari 360 Modena and the color Modena Yellow is named after the town.

In the city of Modena you will find the factories for all of the top sports cars in Italy. The Ferrari and Lamborghini are the most notable of these manufacturers. But the town is also home to De Tomaso, Maserati and Pagani. The corporate headquarters of all but Lamborghini are also located in Modena.

The first inhabitants of Modena were the Villanovans. They would be followed by the Ligurian tribes as well as the Etruscans. While the exact date that Modena was founded is not known, the existence of the town has been known since the 3rd century B.C. The Gaulish Boii were known to have revolted against Hannibal shortly after his invasion of Italy.

In 183 B.C., the area would be re-founded and called Mutina. It was at first used as a military stronghold and as a result, was sacked by the Ligurians in 177 B.C. then rebuilt once again.

Today the largest military academy in Italy can be found in Modena at the Baroque Ducal Palace; most officers in the Italian service are trained at the palace. The nearby University of Modena which is also a popular university in the nation dates back to 1175.

There are many different museums located throughout the city of Modena. However, perhaps the most popular of these are those which house the collections of the finest and most exotic sports cars that the world has ever known. There is also a museum which is dedicated to the many fine archeological finds in the area surrounding Modena.
