With the London Olympics being such a big recent talking pint and with the Queen’s Jubilee and Will and Kate’s marriage, London has been the center of a lot of positive attention lately and has been very much a presence on the international stage. As such you might have thought it would be interesting to visit the country yourself, and there will no doubt be an influx of tourism as a result of all this attention. And if you’re in the big smoke, then you should definitely consider doing a night out to sample the local nightlife. Here we will look at some tips on how to do this and how to get the most from a London night out.

Travel and Timing

London being a big city is highly busy and crowded and can also be a little costly to get around. Getting a taxi then is not a smart move if you want to keep prices down and avoid a lot of stress (though of course you might like the idea of travelling in a London black cab), which means you need to take the tube.

And this is why I highly recommend going on your London night out earlier than you might do a night out at home. Head into central London for 5 or even 4, and you can this way start drinking early and get a good seat before the bankers and other business men and women start to arrive.

This has several other advantages too – firstly it means you will be there for the happy hor drinks and this way you can save huge amounts of money that you would otherwise spend on even a single drink so you can ensure you’re in good spirits early on. Then you will head to the club for around 9.30 or 10 – missing the expensive entry prices that tend to come into effect around 11, and you’ll be able to head back around 12.30am/1am after a good night of dancing and still get the tube home to where you’re staying very cheaply and with no hassle.

Where to Go

The best place to go for your full London experience is Covent Garden. Covent Garden is a fantastically scenic area that’s within walking distance of some of the other central areas too like Leicester Square. It has plenty of great places to eat, but also a lot of brilliant clubs and bars. A few exciting and different places to visit are Adventure Bar – a bar/club set underground where the staff set fire to things and get half undressed creating a very crazy atmosphere, Roadhouse  – a club with lots of great rock music and cheese, and Foundation Bar – where you can drink cocktails out of teapots and test tubes and enjoy a dance floor with its own live Saxophonist. Alternatively if you want to try something a bit different you might want to sign up for the Medieval  Banquet where you can watch a brilliant show while drinking out of chalices and eating with your hands.

Of course there are plenty of other great areas to visit in London too, such as Camden which has a brilliantly artistic and alternative vibe, or Kingston for a huge Oceana with multiple floors and different themed rooms. If you just want some quiet drinks meanwhile with some atmosphere, then the O2 can offer a lot of brilliant cocktail bars, while you can also get a lot of nice drinks at the Westfield Center in Shepherd’s Bush.

The French Riviera is an emblem of luxury, fame and glamour for many of us and it is undoubtedly one of the most exciting areas of France. In the summer it is alive with the rich and famous thanks to some of the most beautiful towns, cities and of course the weather and the beaches. Here we’re going to look at some of the best the French Riviera has to offer.

Nice

The capital of the French Riviera Nice is the fifth largest city in France and one of the most exciting places to spend a summer on the Riviera. The city became a popular tourist destination in the 19th century thanks largely to an influx of British traveller’s seeking the warm Mediterranean sun. The beach may be largely pebbled but the city is beautiful. The Promenade des Anglais is one of the most famous sights and provides a beautiful beach side walk. The Orthodox Cathedral is well worth a visit and the medieval town centre is the perfect place for a leisurely afternoon stroll. Here you can find the remnants of the old Chateau and a rambling collection of narrow alleys and beautiful ochre houses. In terms of places to stay apartments in Nice provide you with a real sense of luxury but the many five star hotels are equally impressive and elegant.

Cannes

Cannes is famous as a millionaires playground and is one of the most outwardly extravagant destinations on the Med. The May international film festival is perhaps the most famous draw for the rich and famous and tourists more generally but the town has a rich warm atmosphere throughout the year. The seafront promenade and La Croisette and the Vieux Porte around the bay are a fantastic place to while away your afternoon’s while Le Suquet which forms the central part of the old town is a fantastic series of rambling streets and medieval buildings as well as the impressive 11th century castle. Nearby you can access the popular Iles des Lerins via a brief ferry ride and enjoy some fantastic beaches. In terms of staying here in France, villas are at their most luxurious and hotels aren’t far behind. Further inland you can find cheaper accommodation and numerous camping grounds.

St. Tropez

St. Tropez is one of the most laid back and stunning parts of the South French coast. It manages to retain village like charms despite being an incredibly popular destination. The port and surrounding streets are messy in an ever endearing way and the beautiful buildings and very traditional French culture mean that St. Tropez is one of the best destinations in France all year round. The 11th century citadel with its museum is perhaps the most interesting sight but the views are the most impressive thing about it. The town hall is fairly impressive but really the culture is the most interesting and exciting thing about visiting this town. The real pleasures for many though are the beaches with St. Tropez being in close proximity to some of the region’s most beautiful and popular beaches. In particular Les Graniers and the beaches on Baie des Canoubiers are particularly impressive.

Aran Islands emerge from the depths of the ocean at the western coast of Ireland. They represent the harsh and unforgiving landscape. There are three in total: Inisheer, Inishmaan and Inishmore and are located west of Galway Bay.

The islands are created by the limestone, which is in many places furrowed by thousands of cracks. Originally, scientists believed that the islands are remnants of glacial activity, but now it is believed they were modeled by a strong erosion. Today they are islands without any trees.

On the islands the main spoken language is Irish and local people still care about their traditions and customs. People living here symbolize the kind of relentless self-sufficiency. Since the Aran Islands were always isolated from the mainland by Atlantic Ocean, the life here was rather primitive until the 18th century. The most important source of livelihood of local people was fishing and sheep farming. With the influx of tourists the life here began to change rapidly. There is still a strong tradition of the original way of life, which you will not find anywhere else in Ireland. This is the only place where you can enjoy the true atmosphere of Irish pubs, art and rural.

The biggest of Aran Islands is Inishmore with its length of 14.4 km. It has a natural small port Kilronan. The port is a great attraction for tourists, because in addition to the spectacular view of all sorts of boats it also offers a small marketplace where you can buy some of the typical fishing sweaters that are knit on the island. Here you can get by a regular ferry from Rossaveal – a village 20km far from Galway City. You can move through the island by a minibus, or you can hire a pony and trap. But if you want to experience the true atmosphere of the island and its rugged landscape, go to explore it on foot or by bike.

The most visited place is undoubtedly Dunaengus – the port of King Aengus. You can see there a huge semicircular stone fortress, which was built probably more than 2000 years ago. This place is usually overcrowded with tourists. If you prefer a quieter place then you should go to Dún Dúchathair, which is a black fort situated about 3 km from Dunaengus. On the island of Inishmore, there’s a lot of other places that are worth seeing – churches, fortresses and ancient buildings that have a mysterious spirit and flair.

Cheerful and relaxed atmosphere is on the Isle of Inisheer, which is slightly smaller than Inishmore. You can walk through it within an hour. You will feel like on a journey into prehistory and into the farthest corners of the Earth. The life here runs like a hundred years ago. Here you can learn what the real Ireland is about.

Every year, countless people make their way to the village of Východná which can be found in the foothills of the Kriváň Mountain in order to enjoy the festivities as well as catch a glimpse of the local folk art which is prominently displayed throughout the village.

Východná Heritage Festival, Slovakia - 1

It was back in 1953 when the Východná Heritage Festival was first held. Originally, the festival was held in an open air field that overlooked the village; however, within the last decade a large theater was developed in the area in order to house the annual event. Every year, usually during the first weekend of the month of July, the Východná Heritage Festival is held in the newly constructed open-air theater.

Due to the fact that the Východná Heritage Festival is now considered part of the International Council of Organizations for Folklore Festivals and Folk Art, more than 1500 performers come to the festival every single year in order to entertain almost 100,000 people who regularly attend the annual event.
