When you drive through the French A75 highway which connects Paris with Barcelona, you cannot miss the technical gem in the form of the highest bridge in the worldMillau Viaduct. The bridge crosses the valley of the river Tarn in southern France and was designed by French bridge engineer Michel Virlogeux in collaboration with the British architect Lord Norman Foster. The bridge was officially opened in December 2004.

The Millau Viaduct serves to the speed up and calm the traffic. Before its construction it was necessary first to descend into the valley and then climb again on the other side, which greatly slowed down the transport, and meant a significant traffic load in the valley.

The Millau Viaduct consists of 8 road fields, supported by seven pillars, which have the shape of an inverted Y. The road is 2460 m long and weighs 36,000 tons. Each field is 342 meters long (2 outer field has a length of 204 m), in the middle of these fields there is a pillar. 90 m high pylons rise above the road (each weighs over 600 tons) and with ropes keep the roadway between the pillars. A maximum height of the road above the ground is 246 meters.

The actual construction work began in October 2001, but weather conditions greatly complicated the construction which finally lasted for 3 years.

Millau Viaduct is not only the tallest bridge in the world but also the world’s longest cable-stayed deck.

Carrick-a-rede (‘rock in the road’) Rope Bridge is located near the town of Ballycastle in Northern Ireland, which is a part of United Kingdom. The bridge is 20-meters long and is made of planks and ropes and connects the mainland with the tiny Carrick Island. It is 25 meters above the sea.

The bridge stretched local fishermen here in late April to September for more than 200 years, just for the salmon fishing season, but now there are very few salmon left. Therefore it is now only tourist attraction that is open for the whole year.

However, with approx. 250.000 visits a year it is one of the most visited attraction in United Kingdom.

Warsaw Radio Mast in Poland with a height of 646.38 meters was until its collapse in 1991 the tallest structure in the world. It is still the tallest structure in Europe that have ever been built.

Transmitter has been designed for long-broadcast of the first program of the Polish Radio (PR1). Broadcasting was captured in Kazakhstan, Iraq, Iran, almost all of Europe and North America. Official name of the station was Radiofoniczny Ośrodek Nadawczy w Konstantynowie, Radiowe Center Nadawcze w Konstantynowie or Warszawska Radiostacja Centralna (WRC) w Gąbinie.

The collapse of the transmitter mast

In 1984, during a technical inspection of the mast, the damage was discovered. The reason was vibrations of the construction caused by wind. Technical problems during the change led to build a new, stronger structure, but the idea was not implemented for economic reasons.

On 8th August 1991 at 19.10 hours during the exchange of grounding ropes, that were in poor conditions, the mast collapsed. Upper part of the mast broke and hit the base, lower one then broke in the opposite direction. The collapse led to the destruction of a small crane but none of the transmitters or substation buildings were damaged, no one died or was injured.
