The Algarve is a popular summer beach destination, but what about during the off season?

Although the weather will not be as hot in the wintertime, it will still be between 17-20 degrees during the day time in this region of southern Portugal. If you find temperatures of 30 degrees uncomfortable then this time of year might actually be a more enjoyable time for you to visit. It will not be hot enough to work on your tan every day but it will still likely be one of the warmest places in Europe. There might be a few rains during your holiday and the temperatures will drop in the evenings, but there are many advantages to visiting the Algarve in the winter.

First of all, you will be able to get the cheaper off season rates at many of the hotels and resorts which will save you a lot of money. There will also be fewer crowds so that you will not have to search for hours to find a vacant sun lounger or wait for a table at a restaurant. Although some of the local businesses will have shorter hours or might close during the winter months, there will still be plenty of selection. This is also a great time to visit the Algarve with kids, because the lack of crowds will make it less hectic and much easier to travel.

Another advantage is that while everyone else is enduring the freezing cold back home, you will be enjoying the pleasant temperatures and sunny days of the Algarve.

If you are planning a getaway to the Algarve this winter, here are some ideas of what you can do while you are there:

Go Golfing

The weather in the Algarve is warm enough to golf all year round and you might find it more pleasant to tee off in these cooler temperatures rather than the peak season heat. There are many excellent golf resorts in the area such as Monte da Quinta Club, Four Seasons Fairways and more which offer beautifully manicured professional courses.

Go Hiking

The weather will be just fine for hiking around the beautiful Portuguese countryside. Explore the winding country lanes and discover waterfalls in the forest, olive groves and picturesque seaside fishing villages. There are many coastal cliff walks all along the stunning Algarve coast, but these can sometimes be dangerous so always follow the marked path.

One of the best places to hike in the Algarve is the Ria Formosa Natural Park. This protected wetland is one of the most significant natural habitats for birds in Europe and many different species stop here on their migratory routes. There are several guided walking trails throughout the park that you can explore.

Listen to Some Live Music in Algarve, Quarteira, Portugal by run4unity

Take a look at the event listings in the area that you are staying and try to catch some live music while you are in the Algarve. Many pubs and restaurants might have performances of Fado, which is a traditional Portuguese style of hauntingly beautiful folk music about life near the sea.

Enjoy the Food

Of course, no trip to the Algarve would be complete without sampling the delicious food that this part of the world has to offer. Seafood is especially delicious in the Algarve as it is so fresh in this coastal region. Another tasty dish is Piri-Piri chicken which is tender barbecued chicken with a fiery North-African influenced spicy coating. No matter what the weather is like outside, you can always spend hours lingering over good food and wine with friends in a welcoming local restaurant.

A holiday in the Algarve in the off season can still be packed with fun, so why not check out some of these fun activities during your winter getaway?

If you are visiting Four Seasons Fairways or another Algarve resort this winter, here are some off-season activities you might enjoy.

Cycling

Cycle your way to your own set of “thunder thighs” with an afternoon of mountain biking. If you don’t have your own set of wheels, not to worry – outfits like Cycle Highlands can get you out of the Granite City and onto the trails.

They even offer special guided packages like the “Secret Singletrack” and “Discover Mountain Biking” to help you along whether you’re a beginner or an old pro.

Mountaineering

Lace up for a challenging hike in the Scottish mountains outside Aberdeen. There’s a number of companies in the area – like Alpha Mountaineering for example – that offer guided walks for all ages year round.

Conquer the summit with an afternoon of hillwalking or scale the mountainside on a rock climbing adventure, the Highlands have plenty of high peaks to oblige you.

Think there’s no snow in Scotland? Think again. You can carve it out on the hills year round without ever worrying about the weather at the Aberdeen Snowsports Centre – this snowflex fun park has everything from rails to moguls for skiers and snowboarders to enjoy.

If you’d rather keep it conventional and feel the wind in your hair, a hotel in Aberdeen can serve as the perfect base for some of Scotland’s best hills come wintertime.

Situated in the Cairgorms, Lecht ski centre is less than two hours from the city centre and boasts some 18 runs for those of us who want to get bundled up in the great outdoors.

Zip Wire

Test your fear of heights and penchant for monkeying around at the Go Ape – Crates Castle. Zip, climb and swing through one of Scotland’s most beautiful forests on your tree top adventure – perfect for a family day out.

This treetop obstacle course isn’t for the faint of heart – at its highest point, the course is 8.6 metres off the ground, and has a Zip Wire some 125 metres long.

Kitesports

Remember when you were a kid and you’d head out to the park on a windy day and watch in awe as it glided around the sky? Maybe not. But either way – kitesports takes adventure sports to the next level. From powerkite to kitebuggy, kiteboard and kitesurf , Synergy kitesports offers courses to help you harness Scotland’s wind power and feel the rush.

Located on the Island of Sicily, Mount Etna is the highest point on the island. Standing at 3,350 meters above seal level, it is considered to be the largest active volcano in all of Europe. It is hard to determine the true height of the volcano since it changes every time there is even the smallest of eruptions.

While lava tends to flow from the volcano on a fairly regular basis, very few times throughout the island’s history has the lava actually made it to the sea. There are a number of peaks located around the slopes of Mount Etna. Because of its activity, during the days of the Greeks, Mount Etna was considered to be the home of the God of Fire, Vulcan. It was also believed to be where the Cyclops lived.

Because of its height, snow falls on the peak of Mount Etna during the winter months. As a result, it is one of only two locations on the island of Sicily where one can go skiing. The other one is in the Madonie Mountains. Skiing during the wintertime is a common occurrence, especially by the local population of the island.

There are a variety of different plant species that can be found along the slopes of the volcano. The most common trees that one can see are oaks and pine trees. The most commonly found plant in the foothills of the mountain is the Broom Plant which can be found everywhere.

There are many streams and ponds that can be found along the slopes of the volcano as well; especially in the denser wooded areas. Here you will find a number of amphibians such as frogs, turtles and toads. There are also a number of salamander species that live in the waters of Mount Etna. The largest lake that you can see along the slopes of the volcano is that of Gurrida Lake.

While there are roads that lead up into the upper portion of Mount Etna, the volcano is best explored on foot where vehicles simply cannot reach. There are a number of different nature trails that lead up into Mount Etna. On the western slopes of the mountain is the Monte Gallo to Rifugio della Galvarina trail, to the north is the Casa Pirao to Monte Spagnolo trail, then there is also the Monte Nero degli Zappini Nature Trail and the Mount Zoccolaro Nature Trail.

One of the more popular hiking trails up the slope takes you from Casa Pirao, up into Monte Spagnolo. The hike will take nearly five hours round trip. That does not include the times that you will want to stop, get something to drink and take some photographs of the awe-inspiring views. Do not forget to take enough water with you as well as something to eat.

On the island of Majorca, which is situated between Spain and the coast of Africa, one will find the mountain range known as the Serra de Tramuntana. It is the main mountain range on the island and has also played a crucial role in the formation of not just Majorca, but also the remaining islands in the archipelago. Due to its cultural and physical importance to the island, the Serra de Tramuntana is an UNESCO site today.

The tallest point in the Serra de Tramuntana can be found at the Puig Major which is situated more than 1445 meters above sea level. Not only is it the tallest point in the mountain range, but is also the tallest point in the entire Balearic Islands archipelago. The second tallest point which stands at 1364 meters above sea level is that of Puig de Massanella.

It is interesting to point out that the climate upon the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range is significantly different than that of the rest of the island of Majorca. On an average, the vast majority of the island receives less than 400 millimeters of rain per year. However, as much as 1500 millimetres of rain are received a year within the Serra de Tramuntana Mountains. As a result, the mounds also play an important role in ensuring that the island has sufficient drinking water. It is also the only point on the island which receives snow during wintertime.

Due to the fact that the entire mountain range is a UNESCO designated site, it is also protected and is utilized as a nature reserve in order to prevent the further deforestation of the island and ensure that many of the rare and endangered species that call the island home, continue to do so for many more centuries to come.

The picturesque beauty of the Serra de Tramuntana is one of the main reasons why countless people make their way up into the mountains. From many of the viewing positions along the sides of mountain, anyone is afforded some of the finest views of the entire Balearic Islands archipelago. Needless to say, the awe-inspiring views have inspired countless people over the centuries.
