There are so many things to see in Ireland, narrowing it down to a driving category may be one way to rein it in. There is good transportation in general, but some places are easier to reach by car.

Flying to Ireland will necessitate car hire once you get there, but the airports have dealers in convenient locations. You might get a brand of American car you never heard of before. The major manufacturers have different models in European countries that may have a bit more style even if they are basically the same as the American versions.

The Dingle Peninsula, Ireland
The Dingle Peninsula, Ireland by Bjørn Christian Tørrissen

The Dingle Peninsula is a good example of a driving tour. Starting in Tralee, go west and around the peninsula ending at Castlemaine Harbour. Take in the Gallarus Oratory, a stone chapel built by monks some time after 600 A.D., that still stands in excellent condition.

Another trip that car hire easily accommodates is just south of Dingle in the Ring of Kerry. Starting at Killarney on the Iveragh Peninsula, circle west and around to Killorglin. Muckross House, just over three miles from Killarney, is a 65-room estate with lovely gardens. Queen Elizabeth visited the estate in 1861.

These two peninsulas are some of the most beautiful places on earth, and National Geographic agrees. Driving is the best way to see them because there are so many possibilities for sight-seeing and photography all the way around both areas. Rain or shine, these locales have been photographed extensively by professionals and visitors for decades. Being able to stop and get out of the car any time is invaluable. The right photograph can be framed and enjoyed for years.

The coastal areas around the entire country are quite photogenic, and car hire touring is the best way to stop and take advantage of the scenery at a whim. Tour buses whiz by fields with ancient stone walls and hillsides of patchwork squares in different shades of green.

There are mountain vistas in various places in Ireland, as well, and seeing them by car is a sure way to enjoy them at leisure. County Wicklow has impressive mountain areas most easily accessed by car. There is no public transportation up into the mountains, so seeing the whole county is easiest by car.

Also in Wicklow is the Powerscourt Estate and Waterfall. It takes time to see all of the gardens, the house and the waterfall, so a car allows for an entire day of sightseeing. Don’t worry about a tour bus leaving without you; go by car and enjoy it fully. This is another site that has been photographed too many times to count.

Powerscourt Waterfall, Ireland

Glendalough, also in Wicklow, is an important historic site in a glacial valley. The name means “glen of two lakes.” Ireland is blessed with unparalleled beauty, and this is one more place in which to witness it in panoramic views from the hills. The remaining chapel and other structures from the seventh century are good reasons to go, and the lakes are unbelievably picturesque.

Many visitors come down to Wicklow from Dublin to hike, but the whole county has attractions that should not be missed. The shoreline is stunning as well. Don’t miss any of it. Hop in the car and see all of Ireland’s majestic views at your own rate.

This has been a guest post from Skedaddle, your best friend when it comes to planning road trips.

St. Martin’s Church – St. Martin’s Church dates back to the Roman period in England’s history. It is one of the first churches established by the Romans in England.

Stratford-upon-Avon

If you are a fan of Shakespeare, then Stratford-upon-Avon should be on your list of trips to take while you are in England. Home to the Royal Shakespeare Company, you can see a performance of one of his plays or visit his birthplace. Although Stratford-upon-Avon can be full of tourists during peak seasons, if you travel to Warwickshire on a weekend trip, you may be able to avoid crowds.

Salisbury

Salisbury in Wiltshire is the home of Stonehenge. Although you will not be allowed to walk among the stones in Avebury, you can visit the historic site of the mysterious stones and walk around the area. Nearby Salisbury Cathedral was established in 1258. It is one of the earliest medieval cathedrals in England and has the tallest spire in the country.

Cambridge

If you are in the United Kingdom to attend school, then you should not pass up the opportunity to visit Cambridge, located north of London in Cambridgeshire. Established as one of the finest learning institutions in the world, Cambridge is easy to visit and walk through. Cambridge University was established in 1209 and serves as the cornerstone for the other colleges of the university, including King’s College, Trinity College and St. John’s College.

Stroll through the lanes of King’s College or visit the ADC Theatre, which is the oldest university theatre in England. If you are interested in World War 2 history, visit the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial. It was established in 1943 to honor Americans who gave their lives in England while fighting the second World War.

Hadrian’s Wall

Hadrian’s Wall is a World Heritage Site and the location of the wall that divided the frontier of England from the rest of the world during Roman occupation. It runs 73 miles from east to west and is home to numerous Roman ruins, including garrison towns and roads.

Tintagel Castle

Located on the western coastline of Cornwall, Tintagel Castle is where King Arthur was born according to legend. Explore 13th century ruins of the castle, which was once home to the Earl of Cornwall. Visit Merlin’s Cave and find out more about the story of Tristan and Isolde and their connection to the legend of Arthur.

Rich in history and legend, attending school in the United Kingdom is the perfect opportunity to explore many of the sites that provide the foundation for much of Western History. Other places to visit include Parliament, Kew Gardens, Edinburgh Castle in Scotland and the industrial cities of Midland and York.

When you ask people about the best places to visit in Britain, you will generally end up the same feedback which includes Big Ben and Buckingham Palace in London, Stonehenge in Wiltshire, The Lake District, Edinburgh Castle and Mount Snowdon in Wales. Sure, these attractions are excellent and I would recommend anyone that hasn’t visited them to do so at some point in the future. However, Britain has much more to offer than these clichéd and often over-populated attractions, it is a land filled with beautiful and interesting things – things that I would never want you to go without experiencing. That is why I have put together this list of Britain’s hidden gems, in the hope that you visit them and then tell your friends to visit them and they wind up full of tourists and I am forced to scour the country in search of more beautiful places! It’s a labour of love!

Anyway, here goes…

Bamburgh Castle, UK
Bamburgh Castle by James West

Bamburgh Castle, Northumbria

Britain is home to a number of famous castles, but few can claim to be quite as impressive as Bamburgh Castle in the north-east of England. This giant building is one of the largest inhabited castles in the country and takes pride of place of the Northumbrian coastline. Bamburgh Castle was once home to the kings of Northumbria and is still a place of fascination to historians and archaeologists who can often be seen digging for artefacts and anything else that provides information on the long history of the castle. This historical landmark should be visited by everyone.

Fishing Cove, Cornwall

Fishing Cove is a secluded a beach as you will ever find – this despite being several hundred metres from a car park! The small beach is a place loved as much by seals as it is by skinny-dippers and naturists and is the perfect place to enjoy a sunny summer afternoon. Fishing Cove, would not doubt be one of the most popular places in Cornwall, were it not for access. The pathway down to the beach is steep and can be slippery but well worth tackling to experience the golden sand.

Dunster Castle, Somerset
Dunster Castle, Somerset by Chilli Head

Dunster Castle, Somerset

Dunster Castle is much like something out of a fairytale with turrets and towers aplenty overlooking beautiful Exmoor. The castle itself is made all the more picturesque by the medieval town that surrounds it and the National Collection of strawberry trees that must be seen (but not eaten). Regular events are held at the castle and you can choose to take a tour around the grounds and inside the vast building itself, tracing more than 1,000 years of history in the process.

The Temple, London

London is home to the majority of Britain’s most famous attractions, but many hidden gems also populate the city streets; one such attraction being the Temple, a building which is hidden in plain sight between Fleet Street and the Embankment. Both an ancient church and a base for members of London’s legal profession, the building was named after the Knights Templar. The Temple is eerie as it is wonderful.

Harz National Park known in German as Nationalparkverwaltung Harz is located at the border of three provinces in central Germany. The National Park is mostly forested – Upper Harz is covered by coniferous forests, Lower Harz, on the contrary, mostly by deciduous forests (originally the area was divided into two national parks). Above the upper limit of the forest, at an altitude of about 1100 meters above sea level, you can see scree, alpine meadows and bogs. Harz National park has been established in 2006 and covers an area of 247 square kilometres.

Once planning your trip to Harz National Park, beware of the cooler and rainy mountains – although this is not a high mountain range, but due to its geographical location is under constant onslaught of moist ocean air from the North Sea. Local climate is therefore similar to high mountains, reaching the altitude of about 2,000 metres above sea level. Be also prepared for a huge number of tourists, Harz National Park is one of the most visited places in Germany.

Among the most beautiful places to visit are Rübeland cave, the highest peak of national park – Brocken (1,141 m) which is also the highest peak of Northern Germany, Hohneklippen crags, Eckerstausee lake, Falkenstein Castle, Harzgerode Castle, hill top resort of Sankt Andreasberg, or saltwater spa and climatic health resort of Bad Harzburg.

Marsascala (Wied il-Għajn) is a town located at the Marsascala Bay on the southeastern part of the island of Malta. It is a popular travel destination.

Marsascala history dates back to the 17th century, when there was a small and insignificant fishing village. It had a strategic position, which in 1614 was used by Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller of St. John – Fra Alof de Wignacourt. He rebuilt the town into a defensive fortress St. Thomas Tower, which protected this part of the island against the Turkish invasion. The village suddenly became a closely guarded place. Now, the fort does not fulfill its function any more, but it’s just a restaurant.

The Coast of Marsascala Bay is lined with a long promenade, where you can find many cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops – it is a centre of all social life. In the vicinity of the city there are constantly growing new villas and weekend houses. Especially the residents of the capital – Valletta, which is quite far away, use to spend a peaceful end of the week here.

Coast is flat and rocky. You can find sandy beaches in the neighbouring St. Thomas Bay. It offers ideal conditions for swimming, relaxation and water sports. The landscape around the city is made up of fields of orchards and vineyards, which give the place a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere.

Lake Dwejra, also known as the Inland Sea, is located on the western coast of the Maltese island of Gozo. It is separated from the sea by the steep cliffs but connected by a narrow natural rock tunnel. Dwerja is a popular natural swimming pool with salt water and also popular place for divers.

This magnificent lagoon is one of the most beautiful places for scuba diving in the world and once you get there you certainly find out why. In good weather you can ask the local fishermen or use any boat service to take you through the tunnel where you can see the caves and dramatic cliffs, and two other natural attractions – The Azur Window and Fungus rock.

Azure Window is the famous natural rock arch, which towers majestically over the coast. The Maltese people call this, about a hundred meters long stone slab, which lies on two pillars, Tiega Zerga.

Another natural attraction is Fungus Rock – a cylindrical block of rock. Fungus Rock is currently uninhabited, but in the 17th century it was an extremely important site, because there is growing the specific mushroom with the Latin name Cynomorium coccineum, which have medicinal effects. The mushroom comes from North Africa, and this is the only place in Europe where such mushrooms grow. This can help in the treatment of stomach problems and hemorrhoids. It was used as an aphrodisiac and diminished bleeding. It has powerful disinfectant effects.

Knights of St. John guarded this rare mushroom very carefully, and who tried to steal it, was often sentenced to death. Between a rock and the mainland there were ropes and the mushrooms were transported to the mainland by cable cars. Coast guard tower Qawra was built on the island just to protect this site.

Between the Inland sea and Azure window there is a small chapel of St. Anne which was built in 1963 on the original site of the old church. If you continue further to the south along the coast, you find the Crocodile Rock.

During the years there were too many tourists coming to see Dwerja Inland Sea in Malta which contributed to the degradation of this place and left an impact on the environment.
However this site is really unique and probably doesn’t have a competitor in Europe.

Zell am See is a beautiful mountain town, located on the western shore of the lake Zeller See. It is a popular resort for summer and winter sports. Its location between the lake and mountain Schmittenhöhe makes it one of the most beautiful places in all of Austria.

Already in 740, Salzburg’s monks founded a settlement at this place called Cella Bisontio, which ensured them prosperity mainly in salt trading. Local people were moving the salt on mules through Hochtor to the south, where they changed it with the wine. Hochtor is a place lying now on the high Alpine road Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, which was completed in 1935 and begin at Bruck, about 4 km from Zell am See. In 1348 the village acquired the right of market town, but the real boom came up with the railway which was built here in 1875. This developed a tourism and mountaineering here.

Zell am See is the capital city of the Zell am See district in the Salzburger Land (the Austrian state of Salzburg). It is situated at an altitude of 757 meters and has around 9700 permanent residents. The town is surrounded by massive mountain giants, reaching heights of about 3000 meters above sea level. This stunning surroundings not leave visitors rest and certainly not hiking lovers. Winding streets full of shops, restaurants and Zell am See hotels offer pleasant atmosphere. Also history lovers can admire many sights in Zell am See.

The oldest building is a tower Vogturm built probably at the end of 10th century. Tower is also sometimes called Kastnerturm, according to trader Johann Kastner, who bought the tower in 1866. In its interior there is now a small museum of local history Heimatmuseum. A major monument of Zell am See is also a parish church of St. Hippolyte from 11th century, which was rebuilt several times over the centuries and in 1770 to its current Baroque style. Inside the church there is a Gothic altar and the frescoes from the 13th and 14th century.

City Hall can be found in the Rosenberg Castle, built in the late 16th century. It has the four corner towers and a circular central tower. The town is located not far from the another castle Prielau from the 15th century, which currently operates as a luxury hotel.

Nearby mountain Schmittenhohe (1965 meters high above sea level) is also a popular tourist site. You can climb up on your foot, a hike will take about 3 hours, or take a lift and then enjoy the view of the snowy peaks of the Hohe Tauern. They are around 3000 meters high – e.g. Grossglockner and Großvenediger. Mountain Schmittenhohe is ideal starting point for hiking and in the winter it is a great place for skiing.

They were built in the 17th century, after Thirty Years’ War. However at this place, there was the castle already before the Thirty Years’ War, but the castle was destroyed by Swedish people. The history of the castle has been linked with the Olomouc archbishop who built it as his summer residence. The castle has its Chateau garden which was after the Thirty Years’ War transformed from the original fruit and vegetable gardens into the Baroque garden. Later it became a park with many rare trees, lakes and beautiful places. There is the Flower Garden with antique statues and a central roundel. Since 1995, Castle and Gardens in Kroměříž are classified as a national monument and in 1998 were registered on the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the Scotland Highlands, you will find the popular Glen Coe. Many people insist that the coe is perhaps one of the most beautiful locations in the entire country. The area is a narrow valley with towering mountains on either side.

More than four hundred twenty years ago, there was an active super volcano that existed in the area. A fierce eruption occurred back in the Silurian period which created most of the cauldron-like formation. After the end of the last ice age, a giant glacier had formed in the region and as it receded, it carved out the coe.

Glen Coe, Scotland, UK
