Bask in the beauty of Europe’s many idyllic walking locations, with a vast array to chose from you’re spoilt for choice. When walking you’re surrounded by a constant flux of new and enthralling sights, allowing you to interrogate areas and places where a crowded tour bus can’t reach. With a multitude of choice it’s difficult to narrow down where to go, however the following locations are certainly not ones to miss.

Austria’s picture post card worthy Alpine scenery is undeniably one of the world’s most beautiful scenes, and if you’re going on a walking holiday, this is certainly the place to be. The network of beautiful mountains and the glistening lakes exudes a tranquil ambiance, perfect for any walking holiday. You don’t have to be an expert or hardcore enthusiast; if your legs long for a break you can sit back and relax in a cable car, and feast your eyes on breath-taking, unrivalled views. The famous region of Salzgammergut is regarded as one of the worlds most beautiful areas to date, and it’s not difficult to see why with it’s utopian beauty. There’s a lot more to the Austrian Lake District then simply being aesthetically pleasing, for those with a hungry and inquisitive mind there are plenty of wonders to explore such as the Dachstein caves!

Feel as if you’ve stepped in to a different world in Finland’s Taiga forest, a world you’ll find hard to leave behind. A natural bliss, the forest is full of endangered wildlife like the brown bear and wolverine. With such natural wonders out there it’s hard to resist, with a myriad of lakes glistening in the sunlight-it epitomises everything a perfect walking location should be. The range of wildlife watching, and outdoor activities adds an extra element to your walking holiday, creating an abundance of choice and opportunities to keep you busy!

The famous Tatranska Magistrala inspires awe with its beautiful, unrivalled views of the mountains that surround the border between Poland and Slovakia. The red marked trail of Tatranska Magistrala follows the Tatras from east to west, commencing at the Velke Biele. Prepare yourself for a 16 hours walk at least, so make sure you’re equipped with a sturdy pair of hiking boots and rainproof clothing. Popradske Lake is a beautiful attraction of the trail with its clear blue water. The lake has provoked a lot of interest from travellers and walkers alike- since the beginning of the 20th century, memorial signs were scattered across the mountains to mark the memory of those that had lost their lives. It is often regarded as the “symbolic cemetery” and is worth seeing.

It may be amongst the most obvious of choices, however Corsica’s GR20 isn’t any less remarkable. Writer Paddy Dillon deemed the path one of the top paths in the world, and it’s not hard to see why. Walk amongst a tranquil path with the stunning backdrop of mountains and valleys. The trail consists of two main parts, divided by the north and the south. Expect unbounded beauty in the north, however prepare yourself for a much more difficult hike with steep and rocky paths. In contrast, the south is a lot simpler and easier to walk- suitable for less experienced hikers. Cirque de la solitude is infamous for it’s risk factor; hikers virtually have to descent 300 vertical metres. Many walkers dread this stage of the trail but agree that the triumphant feeling after completing justifies any previous worry or concern.

It’s a little unfair to list climbing highlights in Europe, as other equally great destinations will be left out, but here is just a sample of the best places that you can climb in the Europe. However this time we are going slightly beyond the boundaries of EU.

Mount Elbrus, Russia, Top of Europe
Photo licensed under the Creative Commons, created by Jason Blue-Smith

Mount Elbrus (5,642 m) is in the Caucasus Mountains in Russia. It’s the highest mountain in Europe, and has more than one summit. For less experienced climbers there’s the advantage of lift and cable chairs that take you up to 3800 metres. If you’ve got reasonable climbing skills you can climb from here, but if not, you can do a walking tour from the top of the lift run. You can easily find accommodation in hotels and lodges in the local area.

Matterhorn, Switzerland and Italy

At the borders between Switzerland and Italy, you can put on your climbing shoes to climb one of the most famous mountains in Europe – the Matterhorn (4,478 m). It stands out in the landscape like a giant rock pyramid and is considered by many to be the birthplaces of mountaineering. As such, it’s on most climbers’ must-climb lists.

Mytikas, Olympus, Greece

In Greece, the home of the ancient Greek gods – Mount Olympus – is also a famous climbing spot. To get to the highest peak of Mytikas (2918 metres) takes two days’ climbing. Many people climb up in one day and rest overnight in their tents before descending the next day. It’s not a place for solitude though – it’s a very popular place to climb.

Mont Blanc, Italy, France
Photo licensed under the Creative Commons, created by Vasile Cotovanu

Mont Blanc is found on the border of Italy and France. The closest towns are Chamonix in France and Courmayeur in Italy. It’s the second highest mountain in Europe, with a summit of 4,810.45 metres. Although it’s not the highest mountain, it’s probably the most challenging climbing spot in Europe. Even though a cable car takes you up to 1000m below the summit, the last 1000 metres is a real challenge. You’ll need high levels of fitness and will have to acclimatise to the altitude before completing the ascent.

Even people who go equipped with all the right rock climbing equipment can get into difficulty on Mont Blanc and the mountain rescue helicopter service is kept busy all summer recovering stranded climbers.

Ben Nevis, Scotland, United Kingdom

The highest peak in the UK is Ben Nevis. The Scottish mountain’s summit is 1,344 metres and it’s reached by thousands of climbers every year. It needs good fitness levels and climbing ability to attempt the day’s climb.

Hohensalzburg Castle, landmark of the Mozart city – Salzburg, is the largest and also very well preserved castle in Central Europe. Hohensalzburg Castle was built as a fortress in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard von Helfenstein. Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach (1495 – 1519) extended the fortress, and gave it the present form. In the long history of the Hohensalzburg Castle, the castle has never been conquered. However during the Napoleonic Wars, surprisingly, the defenders surrendered without a fight.

Today Hohensalzburg Castle is open to the visitors during the whole year. Particularly interesting is the medieval royal room and the castle museum. For a tour around the castle complex from 11th century you will need more time. There is also a palace Hohe Stock, Church of St. Georg or several different towers. In the local Gothic rooms you can join the unique concert with candlelight. Since 1892 there is a cable car (Festungsbahn) in operation, which can help you to get up to the castle easily and quickly.

During 20th century Hohensalzburg Castle became one of the most visited attractions in Austria.

You will find the famous Eisriesenwelt Caves located in Werfen, Austria, just south of Salzburg. The cave itself is situated on the side of Hochkogel mountain. It is most commonly referred to as being the largest ice cave in the entire world. Due to the fact that it covers more than 42 kilometres of passageways under the mountain.

It was back during the late Tertiary period when the Tennengebirge mountains were first formed. Known as the Würm glaciation period, much of the Austrian Alps were formed, including that of the Eisriesenwelt cave. With each passing year, as the melting snows trip into the cavern and then froze the following year, the Eisriesenwelt was slowly eroded away over hundreds of thousands of years.

Anton Posselt, who was a scientist from Salzburg back in 1879, is credited with having first discovered the Eisriesenwelt Caverns. Up until this point in time, only the locals in the area knew anything about the cave. It is interesting to note, that Anton Posselt only took the time to explore the first several hundred meters of the cave, as he believed that the cave itself was an entrance to Hell.

It was not until 1912 when further expeditions into the cave would occur. Alexander von Mörk who was a speleologist from Salzburg spent much of the next two years dedicated to mapping out the internals of the cave network. However, as a result of World War I, his expeditions ceased due to the fact that he was killed as a result the bombings.

Eisriesenwelt Caves, Austria

Shortly after the end of the First World War, the Eisriesenwelt started to develop into a popular terse destination in the region. As a result, a number of cabins and walking paths up to the cave were constructed. However the more than three decades the only option to access the Eisriesenwelt caves was to walk on foot more than 90 minutes. In 1955 a cable car was constructed in the region, which allow people to access the Eisriesenwelt caves in less than three minutes.

It is important to remember, that the Eisriesenwelt Caves are composed entirely of ice and therefore the temperatures inside are well below freezing level. As a result, it is important to make sure that you bring the proper clothing, no matter what time of year you choose to visit them. At the same time you must keep in mind that flash photography within the caves are strictly prohibited.

In order to get the most out of your trip to the caves it is important to take the time to sign up to a tour. This will allow you to get the most amount of relevant information about the caves, as well as their formation, and the various monuments and designations that can be found throughout the geological formation.

The caves are closed during the winter and basic admission is €20. For more information check the official site of Eisriesenwelt Caves: eisriesenwelt.at.
