Since summers are comparatively hot and humid, visitors mostly avoid these two seasons for their travel. This time, the city is full of tourist crowd, and it is difficult to get hold of preferred seats and preferred rooms in a hotel. Winters, on the other hand, are quite chilly, and it becomes difficult to venture out. Most of the time, tourists have to stay cooped up in their hotel rooms and the excitement of the vacation wanes. Although, there are some travelers who visit this city during Christmas celebrations, as, at this time of the year, joy and festivities galore, many visitors tend to avoid the holiday rush.

As soon as the flight lands at the airport, visitors can travel directly to the Station Termini instead of standing in long queues waiting for a private cab. Budget travelers mostly use this network of transportation ensuring accessibility to the tourist attractions much easier. Enjoying these attractions is convenient by booking cheap flights to Rome.

If you have ever been to a Malta museum then you would know that the culture and history of the country stretches beyond the reach of even ancient Egypt, but if you haven’t then now is the perfect opportunity. It has been revealed that four of Heritage Malta’s museums of natural history as well as a host of sites have been scheduled to open their doors free of charge to the general public. This is great news for visitors to Malta interested in its diverse cultural history. While the draw of visiting Malta may have broad appeal with the Museum of Fine Arts for the aesthetically inclined, the Malta Museum of Aviation for budding pilots and even the Malta Museum of Archaeology for wannabe Indiana Joneses; one aspect of all this history is that of the longest freestanding structures in the entire world being a part of Malta’s repertoire.

The Four Malta Museums

The four Malta museums opening their doors throughout Valletta and Gozo include the Folklore Museum, the Gozo Museum of Archaeology, the Gozo Nature Museum and the Old Prison. With such a wide variety to suit any taste, mood or goal, there is no excuse not to take a trip out and see the sights and soak in a bit of cultural history. The museums themselves contain many key exhibitions that many will not experience in a lifetime and Heritage Malta has taken the opportunity to offer massively discounted memberships to the visiting public. The memberships entitle visitors to a host of benefits such as discounted visits, newsletters and events specifically hosted for card holders.

Ancient Pre-History

Not many people realise how many years of history is contained upon the island of Malta; museums feature art from centuries ago while megalithic structures dated to pre-history scatter the country. More than a few World Heritage Sites are situated on the island and the four museums that are opening their doors for free are a great start on a journey of discovery. While the island if teeming with underground tunnels and megalithic structures, only speculation can be made about what their purposes were in ancient times and this mystery is part of the appeal to visitors.

Diverse Cultural Background

The history of Malta is contained within their museums with ancient Phoenicians, Biblical figures, knights of the Crusade and even more contemporary World War history all telling an overall tale of the cultural history of the island nation. Mediterranean does translate into Middle Earth and with Malta at the centre of that, it’s no small wonder that so many important cultural and historical features exist there. A Malta museum is a gateway into millennia of history and the open doors of Heritage Malta’s museums begin that journey for many visitors.

Adding Value to a Holiday

It has always been something that puzzles me, in that why would someone pay out a lot of money to go on holiday, and then spend the time basically repeating how they live their own lives at home.

Mount Olympus, Greece
Mount Olympus, Greece by Gabriel

Check out our list of top five unusual ideas of activities to do during a visit to Greece – throw the beach towel away and embrace all of what the country has to offer.

Mountain Biking

Many companies promote activities such as hiking across the many natural trails that Greece has to offer, so why not get on a mountain bike to explore the surroundings instead? If you do not wish to explore generally, there are several sites across Greece that have specific trails designed for mountain biking, and most of them are open all year round. Among the most popular sites is Mount Parnitha, which is on the outskirts of Athens.

This mountain can be a great resort in its own right, with a casino and several hotels among its many attractions.

Tactual Museum, Athens

One of only five museums of its kind in the entire world, Athens’ Tactual Museum is set up specifically for partially sighted people. The museum contains copies of many famous works of art an ancient artefacts, and people who can see are even offered the option of wearing a mask so they can experience the full spectacle of why the museum was built.

Climb a Mountain

We have already looked at mountain biking down a mountain, but how about climbing one? Situated midway between the cities of Thessaloniki and Larissa, Mount Olympus is one of the most challenging peaks in the whole of Europe. The mountain is accessible to most people, with the vast majority of the climb being a simple hike, although only trained climbers will reach the very highest peak.

As well as climbing the mountain itself, Olympus is surrounded by many charming villages that contain historical churches and other landmarks.

Paintballing

Paintballing has only recently caught on as a hobby in Greece, having been popular elsewhere for many years. Although perhaps not advisable during the height of summer, a visit to Greece can take an added twist of fun should you decide to go paintballing at one of the many centres popping up across the country.

Skiing at Delphi

While the southern resort of Delphi is best known for its mythical ancient ruins and thriving village, it also offers opportunities for skiing. This is perhaps best booked specifically as part of the holiday, unlike our other ideas which can be organised on impulse upon arriving in the country.

Give your trip to Greece a unique twist with our different and out of the box tourism ideas.

One of the leading Greece holiday websites is Touristorama. The website provides all the information you need to enjoy when you visit Greece and the surrounding islands.

The capital city of Italy, Rome’s charms are a unique mix of richly historical monuments and grand contemporary culture. This blend of past and present has made Rome one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and a must see for any visitor traveling to Europe. It is also centrally located within the country, so day trips to other well known Italian cities such as Venice, Naples, and Florence are only a few hours away.

Once in Rome, the options for entertainment are endless. Those that prefer their vacation with a side of history will, no doubt, want to stop by the Colosseum. This ancient elliptical venue was the site of famous gladiator contests and seated 50,000 spectators. Partially ruined today, it still stands as an iconic image representing ancient Roman times.

One of Rome’s more distinctive features is that a separate city resides within its borders. Vatican City, home to the Pope, has a population of only 800, making it the smallest independent state in the entire world. While it was not officially established as an independent nation until 1929, Popes have resided in that general area since 1377. Some of history’s most important art can be found in Vatican City, including Michelangelo’s famous Sistine Chapel.

Italy is known for its pasta and Rome is no exception. In fact, the National Museum of Pasta is located in Rome and alfredo sauce was invented by a Roman chef in 1914. After a day of sightseeing, be sure to hop into a local restaurant for a wonderful selection of pasta dishes. Le Mani restaurant in Tratesvere has some great reviews for its pasta.  It is different from other trattorias (eating establishment in Italy which is less formal than a restaurant) in Rome as it offers dishes not normally found in trattorias. Le Mani is so popular, it is always busy, so booking ahead is a must. It can get very crowded.

Rome has a wealth of hotels and hostels, depending on length of the visit it might be more economical to consider renting one of the many Rome apartments available in the city. Renting one of the apartments offers travelers the luxury of having a home away from home, more space than a hotel room while also having the option to cook meals instead of constantly eating out. A simple online search for Rome accommodation rentals will bring up a list of possible options for renting Rome apartments.

There are many different places to stay when travelling round Europe.  A lot of companies offer short term accommodation rentals in Berlin, Rome, London and you can even rent apartments in Paris.

You will find the famous Eisriesenwelt Caves located in Werfen, Austria, just south of Salzburg. The cave itself is situated on the side of Hochkogel mountain. It is most commonly referred to as being the largest ice cave in the entire world. Due to the fact that it covers more than 42 kilometres of passageways under the mountain.

It was back during the late Tertiary period when the Tennengebirge mountains were first formed. Known as the Würm glaciation period, much of the Austrian Alps were formed, including that of the Eisriesenwelt cave. With each passing year, as the melting snows trip into the cavern and then froze the following year, the Eisriesenwelt was slowly eroded away over hundreds of thousands of years.

Anton Posselt, who was a scientist from Salzburg back in 1879, is credited with having first discovered the Eisriesenwelt Caverns. Up until this point in time, only the locals in the area knew anything about the cave. It is interesting to note, that Anton Posselt only took the time to explore the first several hundred meters of the cave, as he believed that the cave itself was an entrance to Hell.

It was not until 1912 when further expeditions into the cave would occur. Alexander von Mörk who was a speleologist from Salzburg spent much of the next two years dedicated to mapping out the internals of the cave network. However, as a result of World War I, his expeditions ceased due to the fact that he was killed as a result the bombings.

Shortly after the end of the First World War, the Eisriesenwelt started to develop into a popular terse destination in the region. As a result, a number of cabins and walking paths up to the cave were constructed. However the more than three decades the only option to access the Eisriesenwelt caves was to walk on foot more than 90 minutes. In 1955 a cable car was constructed in the region, which allow people to access the Eisriesenwelt caves in less than three minutes.

It is important to remember, that the Eisriesenwelt Caves are composed entirely of ice and therefore the temperatures inside are well below freezing level. As a result, it is important to make sure that you bring the proper clothing, no matter what time of year you choose to visit them. At the same time you must keep in mind that flash photography within the caves are strictly prohibited.

In order to get the most out of your trip to the caves it is important to take the time to sign up to a tour. This will allow you to get the most amount of relevant information about the caves, as well as their formation, and the various monuments and designations that can be found throughout the geological formation.

The caves are closed during the winter and basic admission is €20. For more information check the official site of Eisriesenwelt Caves: eisriesenwelt.at.

Just outside the village of Weissbach which can be found in Salzburg, Austria one will find the 600 meter long Seisenberg Gorge (Seisenbergklamm). This 50 meter deep canyon was virtually inaccessible until woodcutter’s created a pathway through the gorge back in 1831. This was done, in order to make it easier to transport logs through the gorge; however, today it exists as the only means to access the deep ravine.

Seisenberg Gorge, Austria
Seisenberg Gorge, Austria by Aconcagua

For millennia, the Weissbach stream has been cutting its way through the gorge. Even long before reaches the ravine, it affords any visitor some of the most beautiful scenes of rapids and waterfalls as it meanders its way through the forest.

Due to the fact that the Weissbach stream can be extremely torrential during the spring season as a result of thawing snow, access to the canyon is restricted from October to May. For the rest of the year the canyon along with the wooden stairways that take you down into the depths of the Seisenberg Gorge are open to the public.

It can take you more than 30 minutes to walk the length of the Seisenberg Gorge; and that is only if you choose not to stop and admire the awe-inspiring beauty of this natural wonder. However, it is important to point out that there is no other exit out the other side, so you will have to walk back the way you came.

Waters in Seisenberg Gorge, Austria
Waters in Seisenberg Gorge, Austria by vaka0627

While visiting the Seisenberg Gorge may not consume an entire day of your visit to Austria, you will find that nearby there is also the Vorderkaser Gorge which has been carved out by the Odenbach River. While not as long as the Seisenberg Gorge, the Vorderkaser is nonetheless deeper. There are also a number of lakes that can be found near the entrance of the gorge for those wanting to relax and take a swim.

Many of the people who make their way to the area to see the Seisenberg Gorge also take the time to stop by and check out the famous Lamprecht’s Cave which is considered one of the largest caves in the entire world which is entirely accessible by foot. But just remember, that you will need to bring a good pair of walking shoes because the way through the gorge can be rough and uneven.
