Walcher Waterfall is the largest waterfall in Austria and considered the highest waterfall in Austria. However it has three main steps, 50, 100 and 100 meters tall, between which there is a lot of small waterfalls and cascades. The total height of Walcher Waterfall is 500 m.

We can find it in the Land Salzburg, in the Hohe Tauern National Park, at the beginning of the mountain trail Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, near the village Ferleiten. Walcher Waterfall is accessible on foot from parking spot in Ferleiten, from where you can get to the first part of the waterfall. Then you can go ahead to the other parts of the waterfall following the trails.

The whole trip takes about 3-4 hours. However if you still have some free time, you could also visit a local park Wildpark Ferleiten where you can see many interesting natural attractions as well.

Stuibenfall Waterfall was created about 8000 – 9800 years ago during the glaciers melting. At that time there was a thawing of permafrost which moved the huge masses of rock. The stream Horlachbach was created after a landslide of approximately 3 billion cubic meters of rocks from the Tauferberg area to Horlachtal valley. There was thus created a large water reservoir from which the water broke the way and thus created a Stuibenfall Waterfall.

You still can see the rocks, which originally formed the dam of the lake. Stuibenfall Waterfall is 159 meters high an it is therefore the highest waterfall in Tyrol and the fourth highest in Austria.

Stuibenfall Waterfall is easily accessible from the village Umhausen, where you can also visit the archaeological park of Ötzi Dorf (Ice Man Village). The whole trip is also suitable for the children and take approximately 3 hours. If you still want to visit the archaeological park, be prepared for an hour and a half more. Stuibenfall Waterfall is open all year round for free.

Large paid car-park is available at Ötzi Dorf. At the Stuibenfall Waterfall there is also climbing arena available. It is 450 m long hedged way, that leads just at the left side of the waterfall. Reportedly it is also suitable for the children from 10 years and older.

Kmeťov waterfall is approximately 80 meters high and it is therefore the tallest waterfall in Slovakia, located in Koprova valley in the High Tatras. The waterfall has two steps, which fall through a crack rock threshold. The waterfall is created by Nefcerský stream, which is above it at an altitude of 1245 m and is 1.5 m wide. The highest waterfall can be seen during the trip through Koprova Valley.

Koprova valley is a 12 km long valley with numerous side valleys. It is situated between the Western and High Tatras under the western slopes of the dominant peak Kriváň (one of the Slovak symbol). Koprova valley and the surroundings of the peak Krivan do remember the old mining tradition, especially associated with gold mining activities.

Hiking trails along Koprova valley allow tourists to admire the waterfalls and lakes. It is possible to ascend to the saddles and to the Kôprovský peak. At the lower part of the forested valley, the trail is created alongside the Kôprovský stream.

At twenty-seven meters, the tallest waterfall in all of South Wales is none other than that of the Henrhyd Falls. You will find the falls located along the southern most edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, just outside of Powys.

The Nant Llech is a small and peaceful river that meanders its way to the edges of Farewell Rock. It is here that the waters of the river make the 27-meter plunge over the edge of the rock face.

Henrhyd Falls, Wales, UK
Henrhyd Falls, Wales, UK by Dave Mack

The Henrhyd Falls are very well-known; not just in the UK, but throughout the world as well. Up until just recently, the area was a popular destination for those who lived in the UK and just wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle of inner city life. However, since the falls appeared at the end of the recently released film, The Dark Knight Rises, more and more visitors from all over the world have made the trek down into the gorge.

To get to the Henrhyd Falls, you will need to park your car and take a steep hike down into the very deep gorge lined with oak and ash trees. There is a small bridge at the bottom which will take you to the opposite side of the Nant Llech. From here, special care must be taken as the path narrows and becomes uneven.

There is only one way down into the gorge and one way out so special care must be taken when choosing to make your way down to see the Henrhyd Falls. The path will take you down to the base of the waterfall and if you continue to follow it, the path will take you behind the falls.

The area that Henrhyd Falls is located in is aptly dubbed the Wales Waterfall Country as there are countless falls that can be found throughout the Brecon Beacons National Park. For someone who is planning on visiting the Henrhyd Waterfall, make sure that you bring the proper footwear for the trek down into the gorge.

Take your time and make sure to check out the many other spectacular water falls that can be found throughout the area before you leave.

The tallest and one of the most interesting waterfalls in all of Sweden, is none other than that of Njupeskär. This 93-meter tall fall can be found in the canyon that has been cut into the bedrock by the Njupån River. The whole area around is protected by the Fulufjällets National Park which has been established just recently in 2002.

Because the depth of the canyon, the waterfall is shrouded in darkness nearly all year long. At the base of the Njupeskär, you will find countless species of lichens and mosses that can only survive in the moist dark environment. However, during the middle of the summer light guys reach all the way to the bottom of the canyon; but only during the wee hours of the morning.

Njupeskär waterfall, Sweden
Njupeskär waterfall, Sweden by m.prinke

When it comes to getting to the Njupeskär, you will have to take the four kilometers journey. However, because either gravel or boards cover most of the trail, the hike is actually very easy on the feet; even when you are wearing regular shoes. There are many easy to follow signs located along the trail that will help guide you to the waterfalls.

One of the first things that you will notice as you make your way to the Njupeskär, is the more than 400-year-old Spruce tree that can be found alongside the path, called “Old Tjikko”. It is one of the world’s oldest trees. Much of the entire Valley is lush and green and is home to a wide variety of plant species. There are also countless animals that can be seen throughout the Valley. It would be impossible to visit the region without also hearing the sounds of the three-toed woodpecker slowly digging a hole into the side of a tree trunk to catch a juicy worm.

Once you arrive to the waterfalls, you will encounter another trail that will take you down to the foot of the canyon. The breathtaking views from the top of the falls are definitely worth the trip, but getting down to the bottom of the Valley will offer the most rewarding experience possible. Unlike the past to Njupeskär, the past leading down to the base of the canyon is a little more difficult walk. Make sure that you stay on the path because straying away from the marked areas can be quite dangerous.

Brook in Fulufjällets Nationalpark, Sweden by m.prinke

Do not worry though, there are several nice cabins along the way where you can stop and rest your feet. Take a breather and admire the views afforded to one within the canyon. Once you have got enough rest, continue making your way down to the foot of the Njupeskär and feel the cooling mist on your face. From there, you will be able to continue following a footpath through the forest leads to the nearby Njupeskär Café.

Choosing to visit Njupeskär is definitely worth the trip. The experience of the deep and narrow canyon is definitely a unique one. So when you choose visit Sweden, do not forget to make your way to the Valley of the Njupån River.

There are just so many interesting things you can enjoy and see once you travel to France. And while many people choose to visit the major cities of the country, a growing number of tourists have opted to make their way to the French countryside to see with the nation has to offer.

In the Pyrénées Mountains, there are a number of glaciers which had been slowly receding for centuries. This continuously melting ice has resulted in the creation of the Grande Cascade de Gavarnie. It is considered to be one of the tallest waterfalls in France and even one of the largest in all of Europe. During the summer months, when the melting of the glaciers increases, several other waterfalls form nearby.

Grande Cascade de Gavarnie, France
Grande Cascade de Gavarnie, France by Jens Buurgaard Nielsen

The receding glaciers feed the nearby Spanish Lake of Lago Helago. This particular Lake has no surface outflow such as a stream, river or creek. Instead, the glacial waters of the lake seep into the ground before making their way to the waterfall. As a result, the unique experience afforded to one who visits the Grande Cascade de Gavarnie is definitely a rewarding one.

It is important to point out, that while many popular waterfalls throughout Europe are now turned on and off at specific times of the year as a result of them being harnessed for hydroelectric power, the Grande Cascade de Gavarnie is not. The waterfall itself stays on year-round and while it is used as a source of hydroelectric power, the generators are well below the level of the falls.

The amazing geology and spectacular views afforded to one who visits the region only make the trip more enjoyable. Every year, countless visitors from all over Europe and the world make their way to the area just to view the Grande Cascade de Gavarnie as these waterfalls are definitely one of the finest examples of natural splendour in the world.
