Sibiu

The most physically attractive town in the heart of Romania is this little town called Sibiu. It is divided into two parts; lower town and upper town. The lower town is like a canvas painted with colorful houses that are nicely placed on the cobblestone path. The place is restricted by the fortified defense towers that dominate another attraction of Sibiu; Cibin river. The attractions of the lower town Sibiu are The Bridge of Lies, Goldsmith’s Square, the Stairs Passage and the Haller Bastion. The upper town is historically rich and is occupied by some of Romania’s best monuments. The famous squares; the Great Square, the Little Square and the Huet Square are all located in the upper town of Sibiu. Roman-Catholic Church and Brukenthal Palace form part of the Great Square where one can enjoy the artifact collections. The little tower is linked to the Great Square and one can visit this place for splendid illustration of the town. Huet Square has some of the best gothic buildings and is renowned for the Evangelic Cathedral that features five pointed towers. Apart from all these places; historic churches, indigenous museums and Saxon & Romanian Traditions of Sibiu cannot be missed.

Sighisoara

A small medieval town formed by the Saxons of Transylvania, Sighisoara is an elegant illustration of Romania’s aesthetic sense. The whole town has old buildings, old lanes, old café and old churches wedged with traditional as well as modern populace. The most famous Bran Castle or call it the Dracula Castle in Romania is located in Sighisoara. One must visit the castle which, at one time, was the residence of Vlad the warrior. He was a renowned Gothic fighter who stayed in the Bran chamber for two days, but there is no confirmatory that he lived there. The imaginary character Dracula is based on him and hence the bran castle is also known as the Dracula Castle. Apart from the castle, the 14th century Clock Tower, Sighisoara Square, old passageway, Teo’s Cellar and Scala Coperta are some places of attractions to stopover for exploring. Teo’s Cellar is the most recommended place for experiencing ageing wine and strong spirits. Those interested in folk art can opt for Art Crafts and Tea shop where the owner makes wooden spoons. It’s quite an amusing view to watch him make spoons. Next is the Scala Coperta which is more than 370 years old wooden bridge that stands as a national treasure for Romania. The Sighisoara museum and old passageway have their own charm.

Transylvania Countryside

The countryside is like any other countryside with cattle grazing, bicyclers, horse cart rides and vast green mountainous landscape that makes any place more picturesque.

The Romans called it Arx-Arcis (high fortress), the Arabs renamed it to Medina-Arkos. And it was just Arab civilization that created an unmistakable appearance of the village. At this time Arcos became very important and prosperous town. In the 19th century there were a number of policy changes. Arcos was also a home to José I Bonaparte for some time. Today the village is a very important breeding cattle and agricultural centre. It has a strong aroma of olive trees, orange trees and fruit orchards.

The historic center of Arcos is really rich in monuments. One of the most important ones is Basilica de Santa María de la Asunción which is the oldest in Arcos. It was built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries on the ruins of Arab mosque. A visit will costs you €1.50.

Another interesting sight is Torre de Santa Maria. This tower offers a really wonderful view of the city and its surroundings. It is a place where you can find the ancient bells of the 15th century, which are valued as the most beautiful in Andalucia. The tower is opened every day from 10:30 to 18:30.

The village has also the castle Castillo de Arcos that served as the fortress during the Arab period, although its appearance looks more like it was from the 15th century.

Leuven is famous Belgian university town, the local Catholic University was founded in 1425 by Pope Martin V and is the oldest university in Belgium and one of the oldest in Europe. Due to disputes between Flemish and French-speaking population, University had to be divided into two separate branches in 1968 – the Flemish Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, which remained in Leuven and the French-speaking Université catholique de Louvain, which was established in Louvain-la-Neuve. This city was founded in the province of Walloon Brabant.

The first mention of Leuven dates from the year 891, from the time when Carolingian King of East Francia and Holy Roman Emperor Arnulf defeated Viking army.

Convenient location at the river Dijle helped Leuven to become a major commercial center of the duchy. The city became a center of cloth. Famous linen was exported from here already in the late 14th century.

Leuven’s golden period occurred in the 15th century, when was founded already mentioned Catholic University. It has now about 27,000 students. Another important period was the 18th century, when a local brewery began to prosper. It later grew into the largest brewing company in the world called Interbrew, recently renamed to InBev. This brewing company includes well-known brewery Stella Artois.

During the First and Second World War Leuven suffered significant damage. For example, in July 1914, was burned and destroyed the university library with 300,000 rare books and manuscripts. After the First World War the library was renovated. During the Second World War, however, the library was again damaged by fire, in which disappeared other writings and rare books. Although a large part of the University of Leuven was severely damaged by fire and bombing during the wars, most of the sites managed to repair and make its original form.

One of the most important monuments is considered Leuven Town Hall built between 1439 – 1463, which is a typical example of late Brabant Gothic. Its facade is decorated with 236 sculptures from the second half of the 19th century. Very beautiful is also a church of St. Peter built in the turn of the 15th and 16th century. In its interior you can see the rare picture painted by Dirk Bouts – the Last Supper (1464-1468).

You can stroll through the cobblestone old-town squares, that are lined with houses, some of which date back to the 13th century. Most of these houses are now luxury hotels and pensions. Many historic buildings serve the needs of universities, which are hostels for students and professors, or perhaps a conference centres.

Beautiful building near Leuven is Arenberg Castle built in the 16th century, which is a typical example of brick architecture, and combines late Gothic style with the Renaissance. Arenberg family donated the castle with a park covering an area of ​​29 hectares to the University of Leuven in 1916.

Interesting collections can be seen at the Vander Kelen-Mertens Municipal Museum, which represents both modern and ancient art. On display are not only paintings and sculptures, but also photographs, films, design and architecture. Art lovers will especially enjoy the Art Museum, located in a building designed by Stéphane Beel. The building elegantly combines old and modern architectural elements.

The city also features a nice botanical garden Hortus Botanicus Lovaniensis. Founded in 1738 it is the oldest botanical garden in Belgium. Owns a large collection of plants, trees, shrubs, and tropical and subtropical plants.

And how did the period get its name? Just after Hallstatt village, which was at that time an important trading center. There was the salt mined in its vicinity, which was also exported to far away places. The history of the local salt mining extends at least from 2nd millennium BC up to the present and gave the region not only wealth and prosperity, but also created a specific cultural landscape, where nature blends with human activity in unusual harmony. It also led the Commission of UNESCO to add this area “Hallstatt-Dachstein Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape” on the list of World Heritage in 1997.

Very interesting on Hallstatt is that it has long been accessible only by boat across the lake, or along narrow mountain trails. The first road was built along the shore in 1890, but only thanks to the power of explosives. Despite of this apparent inaccessibility the people settled here anyway seven thousand years ago. The rich history recalls not only architecture of Hallstatt, but also the local museum, which collects extensive archaeological excavations. Many of them come from the necropolis on the plateau above the town, where were discovered the remains of 4,000 people. And those remains were the main reason to name the period as “Hallstatt period”.

It is understandable that many places in Hallstatt are related to salt. The local salt mines are reportedly the oldest in the world and you can see them in an unusual museum. Why unusual? Well, how many museums have you visited which had 64 metres long wooden roller coaster…? But the underground salt mines offer much more than this unusual attraction. You can learn about the life of people who mined salt here for thousands of years. The body of one of them was found here in 1734, perfectly preserved by salt. Notable is also an underground salt lake with an area of ​​1400 m2.

If you already have enough salt, you can target the other wonders of the underground world – Dachstein ice caves. And because we are in the Alps, it is not necessary to say that you can see lots of interesting also on the surface. Whether it’s a remarkable historical buildings, or simply “just” beautiful countryside with fresh air and a nice panorama of mountain giants.

There are lots of Austria hotels in the town as well as camp sites at the shores of the lake. Hallstatt is also a great starting point for your hiking tours around the mountains.

Visitors of Scillato can admire the typical Sicilian Baglio house from the 19th century. Its owner is old aristocratic Sicilian family since its inception. It is surrounded by extensive parks full of rare trees and centuries-old trees. This house is nowadays used as a hostel for tourists and there is even a swimming pool with cloak-room. The house stands on the edge of a protected natural park, the Parco delle Madonie and is situated near a large golf course.

Do not look for the sea in Scillato (in fact, not all of the places in Sicily offers swimming in the sea), but if you have a car, you can go to the beach town of Cefalu, which is located approximately 40 km away. Cefalu preserved its picturesque and medieval atmosphere. Above the town rises interesting reef La Rocca resembling a fortress, which was once overlooked by the temple of Diana. Cefalu’s dominant is the cathedral of 1131, which was originally a royal tomb, and the main temple of the kingdom of Sicily. The coast is lined with some beautiful sandy beaches.

The village offers some fascinating 17th and 18th century churches, some of which contain ancient mural paintings and wood carvings. The churches in Arbanasi typically have strong, high walls, small windows and very strong oak doors studded with iron nails.

One of the earliest churches in Arbanasi is the ‘Nativity Church’ or the ‘Cathedral of Nativity’. Extensive studies have found that the church was built in three separate stages which presents some interesting structural characteristics. The main body of the church is divided into male and female sections and the whole building is decorated with murals. The Nativity Church is one of the oldest and best preserved churches not just in Arbanasi but across the whole of Bulgaria.

The most important monument in the town of Valldemossa is certainly the Royal Charterhouse of Valldemossa from the 14th century. The lovers Frédéric Chopin – Polish composer and virtuoso pianist, and George Sand – French writer found a refugee here in winter 1838 – 1839. There are still the rare originals of Chopin scores and the manuscript of the book Winter in Mallorca by George Sand hidden in the cells number 2 and 4. In these rooms you can also see the pianos on which famous pianist composed their works. Every year the town of Valldemossa hosts an international Valldemossa Chopin Festival, where you can see and listen to the famous pianists from all around the world. Charterhouse includes also a church, the historic monastery pharmacy, library, museum and Royal Palace.

The character of the town and its monuments
Valldemossa is characterized by winding streets and colorful houses. They surround another significant monument of Valldemossa – the church of Sant Bartomeu from 13th century. Its entire interior is devoted to Catalina Thomas, who was born here and was declared a saint.

The area is suitable also for hikers – you can go from the town of Valldemossa to the tops of the natural park of Son Moragues, from where you can enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding area.

Marsascala history dates back to the 17th century, when there was a small and insignificant fishing village. It had a strategic position, which in 1614 was used by Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller of St. John – Fra Alof de Wignacourt. He rebuilt the town into a defensive fortress St. Thomas Tower, which protected this part of the island against the Turkish invasion. The village suddenly became a closely guarded place. Now, the fort does not fulfill its function any more, but it’s just a restaurant.

The Coast of Marsascala Bay is lined with a long promenade, where you can find many cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops – it is a centre of all social life. In the vicinity of the city there are constantly growing new villas and weekend houses. Especially the residents of the capital – Valletta, which is quite far away, use to spend a peaceful end of the week here.

Coast is flat and rocky. You can find sandy beaches in the neighbouring St. Thomas Bay. It offers ideal conditions for swimming, relaxation and water sports. The landscape around the city is made up of fields of orchards and vineyards, which give the place a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere.
