  • Dress code: Modest attire required — knees and shoulders must be covered

A Sacred Treasure in the Troodos Mountains

Founded in 1100 AD by Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, the monastery has been rebuilt several times following fires. Today’s complex is a magnificent blend of Byzantine and modern Orthodox architecture, crowned by glittering mosaics and frescoes that took over 30 years to complete.

The monastery museum houses an extraordinary collection of Byzantine icons, manuscripts, and religious artefacts — one of the finest ecclesiastical museums in the Eastern Mediterranean. Don’t miss the intricately carved wooden iconostasis and the courtyard’s beautiful arched cloisters.

The name “Kykkos” derives from a local legend — a bird was said to sing a prophecy about the monastery’s founding: “A mountain in Kykkos, a monastery in Kykkos, a golden girl shall enter and never come out” — referring to the veiled icon that has never been shown to anyone since its installation.

Kykkos monastery is the richest and most famous monastery on the island of Cyprus. It is located in the western part of the Troodos Mountains and north of the town Milikouri. The monastery was founded in around 1100 and is built in Byzantine style. The monastery includes a large surrounding land. In the monastery there is an interesting collection of icons. Most valuable is the icon of the Virgin Mary, allegedly painted by the evangelist Apostle Luke. This icon is one of the last three surviving. Additional icons come from the Russian Orthodox churches.
