This alpine lake is one of the most visited places in the Austrian Gletscherpark area (the area south of Innsbruck). Rifflsee Lake is accessible only by cable car from the town of Mandarfen. The path is well maintained and suitable for most fitness levels, though the altitude above 2,200 metres means that even a gentle stroll can feel more strenuous than at lower elevations. For more ambitious hikers, the area around the lake connects to longer trails that lead deeper into the Ötztal Alps, including routes to the Pitztal Glacier and neighbouring peaks that top 3,000 metres. The highlight of any hike here is the moment when the sun breaks over the surrounding mountains and the water of Rifflsee transforms into a mirror of deep blue and silver.
Winter Sports and Glacier Skiing
When winter arrives, the Rifflsee area becomes part of one of Austria’s most reliable ski regions. The Pitztal Glacier offers snow-sure skiing from October through May, with over 40 kilometres of prepared slopes and a vertical drop of nearly 1,500 metres. The cable car that serves the lake in summer continues to operate in winter, providing access to the upper glacier slopes and the famous Rifflsee ski touring route. Ski tourers appreciate the challenging ascent to the surrounding peaks, while snowshoers can explore gentler terrain closer to the lake shore. The panoramic restaurant at the top cable car station is a popular warming hut serving traditional Tyrolean fare, with floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the frozen lake. For those who prefer a quieter winter experience, the cross-country ski trails in the Pitztal valley offer an excellent alternative to the busy downhill slopes.
How to Reach Rifflsee
Reaching Rifflsee requires planning but is straightforward. The journey begins in the Pitztal valley village of Mandarfen, where the Rifflsee cable car departs regularly throughout the year. From Innsbruck, the drive takes approximately 1.5 hours via the A12 motorway, with the turn-off at Imst leading south into the Pitztal valley. Public transport options include train services from Innsbruck to Imst, followed by a bus connection to Mandarfen. The cable car ascent takes about 15 minutes and delivers passengers to within a 10-minute walk of the lake shore. Day tickets for the cable car include return travel and access to the upper mountain area. The best time to visit for hiking is between June and September when the snow has melted and the alpine meadows are in full bloom, while winter visits from December to April offer completely different but equally spectacular scenery.
