Wörthersee’s Resort Towns

- Pörtschach: Known for its Belle Époque villas and the promontory with the landmark Johannes Brahms memorial, the composer summered here in 1877, 1879.
- Maria Wörth: A picture-perfect pilgrimage village on a small peninsula with twin churches and one of the most photographed views in Carinthia.
- Pyramidenkogel: The 100-metre wooden observation tower offers 360° views of the entire Wörthersee region, the Karawanks, and on clear days as far as the Julian Alps in Slovenia.
The lake is encircled by a well-marked 45km cycling and walking path, mostly flat and suitable for families, that connects all the main resort towns with constant lake views.
Lake Wörthersee is the warmest lake in Austria. It is located in the Province of Carinthia. The area around Lake Wörthersee is also called Austrian Riviera. The water temperature in the reservoir reaches 24, 28 °C during the summer months.
Near Lake Wörthersee you can find other lakes, which are much smaller. They are located mainly south of Wörthersee and extend to the borders of Slovenia. This area is surrounded by mountain peaks of Karawanken mountains, which together with the lake create a beautiful scenery.
Lake Wörthersee is surrounded by a number of resorts, a new modern town of Velden, Krumpendorf or Pörtschach am Wörthersee.

Water Sports and Lakeside Activities
Lake Wörthersee is Carinthia’s premier destination for water sports, and the warm summer waters make it particularly inviting. Sailing is especially popular, with the lake’s consistent winds providing excellent conditions for both beginners and experienced sailors. Several sailing schools around the lake offer lessons and boat rentals, with the main centres located in Velden and Pörtschach. Stand-up paddleboarding has grown in popularity in recent years, and the calm early mornings provide the perfect conditions for gliding across the mirror-like surface. Pedal boats and small motorboats are available for rental at most lakeside resorts. For those who prefer to stay dry, the 45-kilometre cycling and walking path encircling the lake is one of Carinthia’s most popular recreational routes. The mostly flat terrain makes it suitable for families, and frequent lakeside benches and swimming platforms offer opportunities for rest and refreshment. Several well-maintained public beaches with lifeguards provide safe swimming areas for children.
Belle Époque heritage and Resort Towns
The towns around Lake Wörthersee offer a fascinating glimpse into the golden age of Austrian tourism. Velden am Wörthersee is the undisputed queen of the lake, dominated by the magnificent Schloss Velden, a former Renaissance palace transformed into a luxury hotel that has hosted European royalty and Hollywood celebrities alike. The lakeside promenade in Velden is lined with elegant cafes, boutique shops, and the famous casino, which has been a magnet for high society since the 1950s. Pörtschach am Wörthersee, slightly quieter than Velden, is known for its beautifully preserved Belle Époque villas that line the shoreline, many built during the late 19th century when the Austrian aristocracy discovered the lake’s charms. The Brahms memorial on the Pörtschach promenade commemorates the composer Johannes Brahms, who spent several summers here and was inspired to write some of his most famous chamber works. Maria Wörth, the smallest and most picturesque of the resort villages, perches on a peninsula with its twin churches creating one of the most recognisable views in all of Austria.
