In the south of France, about 30 km from Avignon, there is a small village of Roussillon, which impresses everyone especially because of its red saturated buildings that contrast sharply with the surrounding dark green hills. It lies on top of a hill and is known as one of the largest ochre deposits in the world. Roussillon is considered one of the most beautiful villages of France. Thanks to the nearby ochre mines, which are a major tourist attraction, the whole village has a reddish colour. Also, the local soil has all the shades of red, ranging from beige to dark red. It used to be mined 17 different colours of ochre: purple, red, orange, yellow, and many others.

The Ochre Mines: A Geological Wonder
The history of this site dates back to 230 million years ago, when all the area of Provence was under the sea. The sand at the bottom contained iron, which later oxidised, and thus created the ochre. This iron oxide pigment creates the spectacular colour spectrum visible in the cliffs around Roussillon. Already the ancient Romans used it to produce glazes on pottery. In the 18th century, the local residents found out how to treat the pigment to make it resistant to water. With this discovery, a new industry of colours began. Such colours could be used not only for surface treatment of ceramic products, but also in painting houses. The ochre industry boomed throughout the 19th century, with dozens of mines operating in the region and shipping pigment across Europe and beyond. The production of colours decreased in the 1950s of the 20th century. Nowadays, ochre is no longer mined here and the pigment is produced artificially. The village, however, maintains its original colour, and together with its surrounding landscape it is a protected area. The former ochre mines have been transformed into a nature trail called the Sentier des Ocres, which is the main attraction for visitors to Roussillon.
Walking the Sentier des Ocres
The Sentier des Ocres is a marked walking trail that winds through the former ochre quarries just behind the village. The path takes visitors through a surreal landscape of towering ochre cliffs in shades of yellow, orange, red, and deep purple, contrasting with the green of the surrounding Aleppo pines. The trail is divided into two loops: a short route of about 30 minutes and a longer route of about one hour. Both are easy walks suitable for all ages, with wooden boardwalks protecting the fragile ochre soil from erosion. Interpretive panels along the way explain the geology of the ochre formation, the history of mining in the region, and the traditional techniques used to extract and process the pigment. The colours are at their most vivid in the late afternoon, when the low sun illuminates the cliff faces and makes them glow. The trail entrance is on the eastern edge of the village and costs a small entry fee, which goes towards the maintenance and conservation of this remarkable geological site.
Exploring the Village and Practical Tips
In the village you can walk through the narrow and steep streets that are lined with houses with beautiful red-coloured facades, housing souvenir shops, art galleries, and small cafes. The most photographed street is Rue des Moulins, where the ochre-rendered houses create a warm, almost terracotta glow. The village also has a covered market where local producers sell honey, lavender, olive oil, and goat cheeses. The beautiful village of Roussillon is unfortunately flooded with crowds in the summer, so if you want to enjoy its unique atmosphere, it is best to visit in spring or autumn. May and September are ideal months, with pleasant temperatures and significantly fewer visitors. Parking is available on the outskirts of the village, with a free shuttle bus running during peak season. Roussillon is easily combined with a visit to the nearby hilltop village of Gordes and the Senanque Abbey, making for a perfect day trip through the Luberon region of Provence.
