The Lake District: Scafell Pike and Catbells
The Lake District is the crown jewel of UK walking destinations, and Catbells is the perfect introduction. This relatively short climb near Keswick offers stunning views of Derwentwater and the surrounding fells without requiring technical skills. The trail takes about two hours round trip, making it ideal for a morning or afternoon outing. For more experienced hikers, Scafell Pike, England’s highest peak at 978 metres, is a challenging but rewarding trek. The route from Wasdale Head is the most direct, climbing steeply over rocky terrain to a summit that feels like the top of the world. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Isle of Man and the mountains of Snowdonia.
The Scottish Highlands: Ben Nevis and the West Highland Way
Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles at 1,345 metres, is a bucket-list walk for many outdoor enthusiasts. The Mountain Track, also called the Pony Track, is the standard route and takes about seven to eight hours round trip. The summit is often cloud-covered, but the sense of achievement is immense regardless of the weather. If you prefer a multi-day adventure, the West Highland Way stretches 154 kilometres from Milngavie to Fort William. It passes through the Lowlands, across Rannoch Moor, and along the shores of Loch Lomond, offering a constantly changing landscape of forests, lochs, and mountains. The trail is well marked and dotted with bothies and B&Bs for overnight stays.
Snowdonia: Tryfan and the Glyderau Range
Snowdonia National Park in Wales offers some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the UK. Tryfan is a distinctive peak shaped like a shark’s fin, and the ascent involves some scrambling that adds an element of adventure. The summit is marked by two standing stones called Adam and Eve, and jumping between them is a local tradition. The Glyderau range, adjacent to Tryfan, offers a wild, lunar-like landscape of jagged rocks and hidden lakes. The walk from Pen Y Pass over Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach is a full day of exploration with incredible views of Snowdon itself. The terrain is challenging but the rewards are extraordinary.
The South West Coast Path: Jurassic Coast and Cornwall
For coastal walking, the South West Coast Path is unbeatable. The stretch along the Jurassic Coast in Dorset takes you past the natural arch of Durdle Door and the white cliffs of Old Harry Rocks. Fossil hunting on the beaches is a popular activity, and you might find ammonites or belemnites embedded in the rocks. Further west in Cornwall, the path winds around wild headlands, past abandoned tin mines, and into hidden coves with golden sand. The section from St Ives to Zennor is especially beautiful, with heather-covered cliffs dropping into turquoise waters. Coastal walks offer the added benefit of pub lunches in picturesque villages along the way.
The Yorkshire Dales: Malham Cove and Gordale Scar
The Yorkshire Dales offer a gentler but equally stunning walking experience. Malham Cove is a magnificent limestone cliff formation that rises 80 metres above the valley floor. A path leads to the top, where you can walk across a dramatic limestone pavement carved by glacial erosion. Nearby Gordale Scar is a deep ravine with a waterfall cascading through a narrow gorge. The circular walk connecting both landmarks takes about three hours and passes through meadows filled with wildflowers and grazing sheep. The Dales are perfect for walkers who want beautiful scenery without the intense physical demands of mountain hiking.
