Affordable chalet breaks for adrenaline seeking skiers

Updated June 11, 2026 by Claire No Comments

The myth that a ski holiday requires a chalet in Courchevel and a lift pass costing seventy euros a day is perpetuated by the luxury end of the industry. The reality is that Europe offers some of the best value skiing in the world in its lesser known resorts, where the snow is excellent, the lift passes are a fraction of the price of the mega resorts, and a self catered chalet can cost less per night than a Travelodge in the UK. The key is knowing where to look. Eastern Europe, the smaller French resorts, and Italy’s less fashionable ski areas offer the best value for the adrenaline seeking skier on a budget.

Bansko, Bulgaria: The Best Value in Europe

Bansko is the best value ski resort in Europe, and the gap between it and the Alps is widening every year. A modern lift system, a charming old town with cobbled streets and traditional tavernas, and a six day lift pass for approximately one hundred and seventy euros. Accommodation starts at thirty euros per night for a good apartment in the town centre. The skiing is on a mountain that rises to two thousand five hundred metres, with good snow cover from December to April. The downside is the queues for the gondola in peak season, which can be long. Rent your equipment in town rather than at the base of the mountain for better prices. The aprés ski is lively and cheap, with beer costing around two euros.

Jasna, Slovakia: The Low Tatras

Jasna in the Low Tatras of Slovakia offers the best skiing in Eastern Europe outside of Bulgaria. Modern lifts, good snow making, and challenging terrain that will satisfy intermediate and advanced skiers. A six day lift pass costs about one hundred and eighty euros. Accommodation ranges from fifty to eighty euros per night. The aprés ski is excellent, with bars and restaurants that are dramatically cheaper than their Alpine equivalents. The resort is less well known than Bansko, which means shorter queues and quieter slopes. The drive from Poprad airport takes about thirty minutes.

Kranjska Gora, Slovenia: Alpine Beauty on a Budget

Kranjska Gora is a family friendly resort with beautiful Alpine scenery and easy access from Ljubljana Airport. A six day lift pass costs about one hundred and sixty euros. Accommodation ranges from sixty to one hundred euros per night. The resort sits at the foot of the Vitranc mountain, which hosts World Cup ski races. The slopes are well groomed and suitable for intermediate skiers. The town itself is charming, with traditional Slovenian architecture and excellent restaurants serving hearty mountain food. The proximity to Lake Bled, less than an hour’s drive away, makes it an excellent base for a combined ski and sightseeing holiday.

La Thuile, Italy: Linked to France

La Thuile on the Italian side of the Petit Saint Bernard pass is linked to La Rosiere in France, offering the Espace San Bernardo ski area with one hundred and sixty kilometres of pistes. A six day lift pass costs about two hundred and ten euros, significantly cheaper than the mega resorts of the French Alps. Accommodation ranges from eighty to one hundred and twenty euros per night. The Italian side offers excellent value for money, with cheaper lift passes and accommodation than the French side. The skiing is intermediate friendly, with long, cruisy red runs that are perfect for building confidence.

Les Houches, France: Chamonix on a Budget

Les Houches is in the Chamonix valley but has its own, cheaper lift pass and accommodation. A six day lift pass costs about two hundred euros. Accommodation ranges from one hundred to one hundred and fifty euros per night. The skiing is on the south facing side of the valley, with stunning views of the Mont Blanc massif. The resort is quieter and more relaxed than Chamonix itself, but the Chamonix nightlife and facilities are only a short bus ride away. Les Houches is also part of the World Cup circuit, and the Kandahar piste is one of the most challenging downhill runs in the world.
