The History of Pierrefonds Castle
Pierrefonds Castle (Chateau de Pierrefonds) is a nice picturesque castle located in France, about 80km north-east of Paris. It sits on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Compiegne Forest, a position that has been fortified since Roman times. The castle’s strategic location allowed it to control the road between Paris and the Champagne region, making it an important military asset throughout the medieval period.
The old castle was built on the place of today’s castle in Pierrefonds already in the 12th century. This great military strength has undergone a number of refurbishment over the centuries as well as its owner changed frequently. In March 1617, during the troubled reign of King Louis XIII, the castle was conquered by troops of the Chief minister Cardinal Richelieu. He decided to demolish a castle. However thanks to a huge range of construction, the work of destruction was not completed. The roofs have been destroyed and the walls were devastated by the canons.
Pierrefonds Castle then remained as a ruin for the next two centuries. Napoleon I bought the wreck in 1810 for just 3,000 francs. In the 19th century began a period of fashion traditions of medieval knights. The ruins of Pierrefonds Castle were captured between 1834 and 1866 by the French painter Corot in his paintings. These romantic depictions of the ruined castle helped spark a renewed interest in its preservation and eventual restoration. The site became a popular destination for artists and writers who were drawn to the picturesque beauty of the crumbling medieval walls surrounded by deep forest.
The Vision of Viollet-le-Duc
The future French emperor Napoleon III visited the castle in 1850. Later, as emperor, asked the architect Viollet-le-Duc in 1857 to carry out reconstruction of the castle. The project grew and later they wanted to build a royal residence here. Viollet-le-Duc built it much under the influence of his ideas about the Middle Ages. The fort was changed to the castle. Yet as a builder proved very good knowledge of military fortifications of 14th century. His approach to restoration was controversial even in his own time, as he freely added elements that may never have existed in the original structure, creating what some critics called an idealised version of a medieval castle. Nevertheless, his work at Pierrefonds is now regarded as a masterpiece of romantic historicism.
Viollet-le-Duc’s work at Pierrefonds includes the grand entrance gate, the massive keep, and the elegant residential wing with its richly decorated rooms. The painted ceilings in the Salle des Preux and Salle des Gardes depict knights and heraldic symbols in vivid colours that would have been typical of medieval decorative arts. The castle’s collection of replica medieval furniture and armour helps visitors imagine what life was like for the nobility of the period, even if many of these pieces are based on the architect’s own interpretations rather than historical originals. The elaborate chimneys, ornate dormer windows, and sculpted gargoyles that adorn the exterior are pure expressions of Viollet-le-Duc’s romantic vision of the Middle Ages.
Visiting Pierrefonds Castle Today
Today, Pierrefonds Castle is one of the most visited monuments in the Picardy region, attracting over 300,000 visitors annually. It has also become a popular filming location, appearing in movies and television series including the BBC adaptation of “The Hollow Crown” and several French historical dramas. The castle’s photogenic silhouette, rising dramatically from the forest canopy, makes it a favourite subject for photographers and artists. The surrounding Compiegne Forest offers excellent walking and cycling trails that provide stunning views of the castle from different angles.
Visitors can explore the furnished rooms of the residential wing, climb the towers for panoramic views of the surrounding forest, and walk along the ramparts that encircle the outer bailey. The castle’s souvenir shop offers books about Viollet-le-Duc’s work, and the nearby village of Pierrefonds provides charming cafes and restaurants where visitors can enjoy a meal after their tour. The village itself, with its medieval church and half-timbered houses, is worth exploring in its own right. Guided tours are available in French and English, and the castle regularly hosts medieval-themed events and exhibitions that bring its dramatic history to life.
