Disneyland Paris – France’s and Europe’s most visited tourist attraction

August 12, 2010 by europeexplored No Comments

Disneyland Paris is Europe’s most visited tourist attraction — a magical 2,230-hectare resort in Marne-la-Vallée, just 32 kilometres east of Paris, where two world-class theme parks (Disneyland Park and Walt Disney Studios Park), seven themed hotels, and the Disney Village entertainment district welcome over 15 million visitors annually. Opened in 1992 as Euro Disney, Disneyland Paris has weathered a famously rocky start to become one of the crown jewels of the Disney empire — and the only Mickey Mouse experience on the European continent, drawing families from across Europe and beyond to its Sleeping Beauty Castle, its unique European-themed attractions, and its distinctively French culinary approach that includes champagne and table-service dining alongside the churros and turkey legs.

Quick Facts: Disneyland Paris

  • Best time to visit: Midweek outside French and European school holidays for the shortest queues; January–March and September–November for the lowest crowds; avoid French school holidays (check the Zone C calendar — Paris schools), Christmas week, and August if possible. March–May and September–October offer the best balance of weather and manageable wait times.
  • Top attractions: Disneyland Park: Big Thunder Mountain, Phantom Manor, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the spectacular evening show Disney Illuminations on Sleeping Beauty Castle. Walt Disney Studios Park: The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Ratatouille: The Adventure, and Crush’s Coaster
  • How to get there: ~35 minutes from central Paris by RER A train to Marne-la-Vallée/Chessy station (the station is at the park gates); ~45 minutes from Charles de Gaulle Airport by TGV (10 minutes!) or shuttle bus; ~3.5 hours from London by Eurostar (direct service)
  • Tickets: 1-day/1-park ~€69–105 (dynamic pricing — prices rise for peak dates); 1-day/2-park ~€89–125; book online in advance for the best prices
  • Pro tip: Stay at a Disney hotel for Extra Magic Hours (1 hour early access to the parks), download the official Disneyland Paris app for live wait times, and use the Disney Premier Access paid fast-pass system for the busiest attractions

How Disneyland Paris Differs from the US Parks

Disneyland Paris has a distinctive character of its own. The park’s centrepiece, Sleeping Beauty Castle (Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant), is widely considered the most beautiful Disney castle in the world — taller and more ornate than its American counterparts, with an animatronic dragon living in its dungeon. The park’s version of Big Thunder Mountain is on an island in the Rivers of the Far West and is widely considered the best version of the ride globally. Phantom Manor — the Paris version of the Haunted Mansion — has a darker, more narrative-driven storyline unique to this park. And uniquely, Disneyland Paris serves alcohol in its sit-down restaurants, making it the only Magic Kingdom-style Disney park in the world where you can enjoy a glass of champagne with dinner.

Disneyland Paris is a holiday and recreation resort in Paris, France. It is located 32 km from the centre of Paris. Operating since 12 April 1992, it was the second Disney resort to open outside the United States (following Tokyo Disney Resort) and the first to be owned and operated by Disney. With 15,405,000 combined visitors to the resort’s Disneyland Park and Walt Disney Studios Park in the fiscal year of 2009, it is France’s and Europe’s most visited Tourist site.

Disneyland Paris comprises two theme parks:

Disneyland® Park
In a Magical Kingdom not so far away – somewhere between a place where you wish upon a star and dreams come true – classic Disney heroes and heroines live once upon a time in fairytales that are, happily, never ending.
