Selecting Fantastic Holiday Villas In Cyprus

April 24, 2012 by Claire No Comments

Cyprus is one of the best villa-holiday destinations in the Mediterranean — the island of Aphrodite, where the sea is warm from April to November, the beaches range from the wild Akamas Peninsula (where sea turtles nest on Lara Beach) to the classic resort sands of Protaras and Ayia Napa, and the combination of reliable sunshine, excellent food, a landscape of mountain villages and ancient ruins, and a well-developed villa-rental infrastructure make it one of the most appealing options for a self-catering Mediterranean holiday. A villa in Cyprus offers something that a hotel cannot: space, privacy, your own pool, and the freedom to explore the island at your own pace, eating at village tavernas when you choose, cooking with ingredients from the local market, and settling into a rhythm that feels more like living than holidaying.

Quick Facts: Villa Holidays in Cyprus

  • Best regions for villas: The Paphos district (the most popular — the Coral Bay and Sea Caves area combines proximity to Paphos town with quieter beach locations; good access to the Akamas Peninsula for hiking and the Lara Beach turtle sanctuary); the Larnaca district (more traditional — the villages around Larnaca, like Pervolia and Mazotos, offer good-value villas and easy access to the airport); the Protaras and Ayia Napa area (the best beaches on the island — Fig Tree Bay and Nissi Beach — but the area is busier and more tourist-oriented); the Troodos foothills (for a completely different Cyprus — mountain villages, vineyards, cooler temperatures in summer, and a more authentic rural experience)
  • When to book: July–August — book 6–12 months ahead for the best villas (Cyprus is very popular with British holidaymakers and the best properties go early); June and September offer excellent weather with more availability; the villa season runs from April to October; winter villas with heating and fireplaces are available in the Troodos Mountains — a very different and underrated Cyprus experience
  • What to look for: Proximity to a village taverna (a villa within walking distance of a good Cypriot restaurant — meze, souvlaki, halloumi, and a bottle of local Commandaria wine — transforms the experience), a private pool (most villas include one — check the size and sun exposure), and air conditioning (essential in July–August)
  • Cost: A good 2-3 bedroom villa with a pool in July–August: ~€1,500–3,000 per week depending on location and quality; shoulder season (May–June, September–October): ~€800–1,800 per week
