Updated June 10, 2026 by europeexplored No Comments

Slovakia’s oldest zoo opened in 1955 in the shadow of Bojnice Castle, a fairy-tale Gothic castle that looks like it was lifted from a Disney film, and today ZOO Bojnice is the country’s most popular zoo with over 350 species housed across 41 hectares of wooded hillside in the Strážovské Vrchy mountains. Unlike many European zoos that expanded from cramped 19th-century menageries, ZOO Bojnice was designed from the start as a modern facility, with enclosures that prioritise naturalistic habitats and species-appropriate conditions. The zoo is a major centre for conservation breeding, particularly for endangered European species such as the Przewalski’s horse, the European bison, the Eurasian lynx, and the western capercaillie, and participates in international breeding programmes coordinated through EAZA, the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria.

Quick Facts: ZOO Bojnice

Visitors can easily combine a morning at the zoo with an afternoon exploring the castle’s ornate interiors, the 90-metre-deep well, and the surrounding English-style park.

Breeding Success Stories

European bison breeding group is part of the coordinated pan-European effort to restore the species after its extinction in the wild in the early 20th century. The zoo also successfully hatches and raises capercaillie chicks, a species that has declined dramatically across Central Europe due to habitat loss and human disturbance.
