Bojnice Castle rises from the forest like a storybook illustration brought to life. Its pointed turrets and colourful rooftops pierce the sky above the medieval town below. A moat surrounds the base where peacocks strut across manicured lawns. Inside, gilded halls and ornate ceilings reveal the taste of noble families who once called this place home. The castle dungeon and tower offer glimpses of a harsher past. Each year the castle hosts an international festival of ghosts and spirits that draws visitors from across Europe to its candlelit corridors.

Bojnice Castle is not just one of the most popular castles in all of Slovakia, it is also one of the most famous castles in the world due to the fact that it has been featured in countless movies over the last century.

It was back in the 12th century when Bojnice Castle was first constructed. Back then it was nothing more than a wooden fort. Within the next century, the wood was replaced by stone. In 1302 the first private owner, Máté Csák, took control of the castle after it was given to him by King Ladislaus V of Hungary. A century later it was reverted back to King Matthias Corvinus and later bequeathed to his illegitimate son. The castle changed hands many times over the centuries, each new owner leaving their mark on its architecture and fortifications.

After the death of King Matthias, the castle and all of its lands were sold to the Zapolya family before finally falling under control of the wealthy Thurzos family in 1528. It was under the Thurzos family that Bojnice Castle, as well as many castles throughout Slovakia, was reconstructed for the first time. However, the current reincarnation of this picturesque castle can be attributed to John Palffy, who completely reconstructed the castle at the end of the 19th century using the romantic Gothic style inspired by French chateaux.

Architecture and Interior Highlights

Inspired by the beautiful castles of France, John Palffy undertook a passionate reconstruction of Bojnice Castle. Every single aspect of the reconstruction was overseen by John, and by 1908, when construction was finally completed, Bojnice Castle became one of the most beautiful castles in all of Slovakia and possibly the world. The exterior features pointed Gothic turrets, colourful tiled roofs, and a stone bridge crossing the moat. Inside, visitors can explore the Golden Hall with its ornate coffered ceiling decorated with intricate wood carvings and gold leaf. The Knight Hall is adorned with hunting trophies, medieval weapons, and armour collected by the Palffy family during their travels across Europe. The castle chapel features a beautiful neo-Gothic altar and stained glass windows depicting scenes from the life of Saint John of Nepomuk. The private chambers of the Palffy family remain furnished as they were in the early 20th century, complete with period furniture, portraits, and Flemish tapestries. The castle dungeon and tower offer a glimpse into a harsher past, with exhibitions of medieval torture instruments and prison cells that once held captured enemies and debtors. Over the centuries, Bojnice Castle has been the inspiration for countless storybooks and fairy tales, and its romantic silhouette has appeared in numerous Slovak films and international productions.

The Castle Park, Zoo, and Annual Festivals

John Palffy heirs fought over control of the castle and much of its contents, and as a result many historic works that were once contained within the walls were either destroyed or sold off. The property was transferred to Ján Baťa in 1939 before being confiscated by the government of Czechoslovakia in 1945. A huge fire damaged much of the castle in 1950, and it was decided that Bojnice Castle would be restored to its previous glory and turned into a museum. Today the castle is surrounded by a beautiful English-style park with centuries-old trees, ornamental ponds, and free-roaming peacocks. Adjacent to the grounds is the Bojnice Zoo, one of the oldest and most visited zoos in Slovakia, home to over 350 species of animals. On account of its charming design, the castle is considered a true fairy tale castle and hosts the annual Castle Fairytale Festival every summer, featuring costumed performers, medieval music, and theatrical performances. The International Festival of Ghosts and Spirits takes place in late spring, drawing paranormal enthusiasts from across Europe to explore the candlelit corridors after dark. Today more than a quarter of a million people visit Bojnice Castle every year, making it one of the most visited tourist attractions in Slovakia.
