  • Best for: Swimming, snorkelling, photography, and coastal hiking

Geology and the Famous Double Sea Arch

The dramatic coastline around Praia da Marinha is a masterpiece of natural sculpture, shaped over millions of years by the relentless action of wind and water on the region’s soft limestone cliffs. The most iconic feature is the double sea arch, a natural bridge formed where the sea has carved two adjacent arches through a narrow headland. This striking formation has appeared on countless postcards, travel magazines, and even Portuguese tourism campaigns, making it one of the Algarve’s most recognisable landmarks. The cliffs themselves are layered with horizontal bands of fossil-rich limestone, revealing ancient seabeds from the Jurassic period. At sunset, the golden stone glows with warm hues of amber and ochre, creating a photographer’s paradise. A short cliffside path leads from the main beach around the headland, offering spectacular viewpoints of the arches and the turquoise waters below. From this vantage point, you can also spot the smaller sea caves and rock stacks that dot the coastline, each with its own unique shape and character.

The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail

Praia da Marinha serves as one of the main trailheads for the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail (Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos), widely considered one of the most beautiful coastal hikes in Europe. This 6-kilometre one-way route follows the clifftops between Praia da Marinha and Praia de Vale Centeanes, passing a succession of breathtaking viewpoints, natural arches, sea caves, and secluded coves. The trail is relatively easy, with well-maintained paths and gentle gradients, making it suitable for most fitness levels. Along the way, you will pass directly above the famous Benagil Sea Cave, a spectacular grotto with a natural skylight that can only be accessed by swimming or kayaking from the nearby Benagil beach. Other highlights include the dramatic sinkhole known as Algar Seco, where the sea has carved a series of tunnels and chambers into the cliff face, and numerous miradouros (viewpoints) offering uninterrupted panoramas of the golden coastline. Allow around two to three hours for the full hike, and bring plenty of water, sun protection, and your camera for some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in Portugal.

Tips for Visiting

  • Arrive early: The beach is relatively small and fills up quickly in high season. Aim for 9am in July–August.
  • Walk the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail: This 6km coastal path runs from Praia da Marinha to Praia de Vale Centeanes, passing stunning viewpoints, sinkholes, and the famous Benagil Cave along the way.
  • Boat trips: Local operators run small boat tours from nearby Benagil and Carvoeiro that explore the sea caves, including the spectacular Benagil Sea Cave.
  • Bring supplies: There is a small seasonal café but no shops at the beach, pack water, snacks, and sun protection.

Praia da Marinha is one of the most beautiful and emblematic beaches of the Atlantic coast of Portugal. In 1998, it was awarded the distinguished “Golden Beach” award by the Portuguese Ministry of the environment because of its outstanding natural qualities. Furthermore, pictures of the beach have often been used in promotional material and “Guides to Portugal” distributed around the world.

This beach is famous mainly for its cliffs, but also for the pristine quality of the water. Advertising agencies and television producers often use Praia da Marinha in advertising campaigns.

  1. Praia da Marinha is as beautiful as every postcard suggests. The sea stacks rising out of crystal-clear water are iconic for a reason. We arrived at 8am and had the beach nearly to ourselves — by 11am it was packed. The rock formations along the cliffs are worth exploring. The Benagil sea cave is nearby and accessible by kayak. The Algarve coastline is world-class.
