The Nine Themed Gardens of Villa Ephrussi
The gardens of Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild are the true masterpiece of the estate, spanning seven hectares and comprising nine distinct themed gardens that circle the villa like a botanical tiara. The centrepiece is the formal French garden, a grand parterre of clipped box hedges, symmetrical flowerbeds, and ornate fountains that cascade down a series of terraces toward the Mediterranean. The fountains are set to music and activate every 20 minutes, creating a choreographed dance of water and light that is especially magical in the late afternoon. From the French garden, you can wander through the Spanish garden with its tiled Moorish benches and citrus trees, the Japanese garden featuring a traditional teahouse and koi pond, the Florentine garden with its Renaissance-inspired stonework, and the exotic garden filled with cacti and succulents from around the world. Each garden was designed by Baroness Beatrice herself, who travelled extensively and brought back ideas from her visits to the grand estates of Europe and beyond. The rose garden blooms spectacularly in May and June, with over 300 varieties planted in concentric circles around a central fountain.
Inside the Belle Epoque Palace
The villa itself is a treasure trove of fine and decorative arts collected by Baroness Beatrice over her lifetime. The interior is arranged as she left it, with rooms opening onto one another in the traditional French enfilade style. The grand salon features 18th-century Gobelin tapestries, a Louis XV parquet floor, and chandeliers of Venetian glass that catch the Mediterranean light streaming through the tall windows. The dining room is set with Sevres porcelain and silverware for 24 guests, a glimpse into the lavish entertaining style of the Rothschild family. The Baroness collected with an eye for quality rather than quantity, and each piece in the villa has a provenance: the writing desk of Marie Antoinette, the blue porcelain from the Kangxi period in China, the Renaissance bronzes, and the paintings by Francois Boucher and Jean-Honore Fragonard. The Boudoir, one of the smallest rooms in the villa, is covered entirely in 18th-century lacquered panels from a Parisian hotel particulier, creating an intimate jewel-box space. Upstairs, the private apartments offer a more personal view of the Baroness life, including her bedroom with its original furnishings and a terrace overlooking the Bay of Villefranche.
Planning Your Visit to Cap Ferrat
A visit to Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild deserves at least half a day to properly experience both the house and the gardens. The villa opens daily at 10:00 from mid-February to early November, with last admission at 17:30. The entry fee of approximately 16 EUR for adults includes an audio guide that brings the history of the house to life with stories of the Baroness and her extraordinary collection. Arrive early in the morning to experience the gardens before the crowds arrive, when the light is soft and the fountains reflect the morning sun. The best time for photographers is the golden hour before sunset, when the Mediterranean glows orange and pink behind the villa silhouette. Combine your visit with a walk through the neighbouring village of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, a charming fishing port turned luxury resort with a lovely waterfront promenade. The coastal path from the villa to the village takes about 20 minutes and offers stunning views of the Cap Ferrat peninsula. For lunch, the Cafe de la Plage in Saint-Jean serves excellent seafood and Salade Nicoise at reasonable prices for this exclusive stretch of coast.

St. Jean Cap Ferrat was at the beginning of the 19th century one of the most famous summer resorts in Europe. The most beautiful palace of the French Riviera and in total 9 different gardens of Baroness Béatrice Rothschild is in the form of a ship. 30 gardeners have been working for the vivid dream of Baroness Béatrice. Béatrice, wife of a wealthy Russian banker Maurice Ephrussiho, liked art, to which she dedicated all her life. She collect porcelain, sculptures and antique furniture, and when she died in 1934 in seventy-five years, she left the entire collection to the French Academy of Fine Arts.
The town is a resort of the aristocracy, the wealthy and celebrities. Some famous people spent holidays here, such as Charlie Chaplin, or Winston Churchill. Admission to the villa is 10 euros.
