Bunratty Castle with Folk Park is located about 15km west of Limerick on the place, which was once the island on the north bank of the River Shannon. It’s a very strategic location and was occupied by Vikings already in 970 as part of a Viking trading camp. The first Normans built a castle here, but then lost it. The Bunratty Castle was built and destroyed several times during its history. The castle, which stands there today, was built by the MacNamara family around 1425.
In this refurbished and very impressive citadel you can find collections of furniture, tapestries, paintings and sculptures from all over Europe. A part of castle are gardens and completely reconstructed 19th century village.
The Bunratty castle is now famous for its medieval banquets, at which the “Bunratty Singers” perform. You can also attend the medieval feast which takes place on the castle.
The Bunratty castle stands on an area of 26 acres of Bunratty Folk Park, where are over 30 typical village buildings including the school building, doctor’s house, post office and other.

The Medieval Banquet Experience
The Bunratty Medieval Banquet has been running continuously since 1963 and is one of Ireland’s most popular heritage dining experiences. Guests are welcomed with a traditional goblet of mead in the castle’s main hall before ascending to the great hall on the first floor. The four-course meal is served by costumed attendants while the Bunratty Singers perform medieval ballads and Irish folk songs. The menu includes soup with soda bread, a main course of roast meats with vegetables, and a dessert of traditional Irish cheesecake or apple tart. The castle itself provides a remarkably authentic setting, with its stone walls, open fireplaces, and period furnishings transporting diners back to the 15th century. vegetarian options are available with advance notice. The atmosphere, enhanced by candlelit tables and the stone walls of the genuine 15th-century hall, creates an unforgettable experience. The banquet runs twice nightly, with seatings at approximately 17:30 and 20:45. Booking is essential.
Exploring Bunratty Folk Park
The 26-acre Bunratty Folk Park surrounds the castle and recreates Irish rural life in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Over 30 buildings have been relocated from across the region and reconstructed on site, including traditional thatched cottages, a blacksmith’s forge, a schoolhouse, a post office, a doctor’s house, and a village pub complete with period furnishings. Costumed interpreters demonstrate traditional crafts including bread baking, wool spinning, and thatching. The farm section houses Irish animal breeds including Kerry cattle, Galway sheep, and Connemara ponies. The walled garden supplies the castle’s restaurant with seasonal produce and herbs. The folk park requires at least two hours to explore properly and is particularly popular with families, offering hands-on activities throughout the day. Admission to the castle and folk park costs 15 euros for adults.
