Wind howls through the sandstone spires of Bohemian Switzerland as you approach the largest natural rock arch on the European continent. Pravcicka brana spans twenty-six metres across, a monumental stone bridge carved by millennia of wind and water. The arch frames a view of deep forested valleys and distant mountain peaks that stretch toward the horizon. Pravcicka brana (Pravcicka Gate) is a Czech national natural monument and the largest natural rock gate in Europe. It is considered the most beautiful rock formation in the National Park of Bohemian Switzerland (Ceske Svycarsko) and a symbol of the region. Its dimensions are impressive, but when viewed close-up it seems to be even greater. The span arch at the bottom is 26.5 m, the height of the gate is 16 m and its width is about 7-8 m. The minimum thickness is 3 m, the peak of the gate is 21 m above the bottom.

The Geology Behind Europe Largest Rock Arch
The story of Pravcicka brana begins millions of years ago, when the area now known as Bohemian Switzerland lay beneath a warm Cretaceous sea. Layers of sand and sediment accumulated on the seabed, compressing over time into the soft quartz sandstone that defines the landscape today. Uplift and the retreat of the sea exposed these sedimentary layers to the forces of weathering. Freezing and thawing, wind abrasion, and the chemical action of rainwater slowly carved fissures into the sandstone plateau. Over countless millennia, these fissures widened into deep canyons, leaving behind isolated rock towers and arch bridges. Pravcicka brana is the largest and most dramatic of these remnants, a thin ribbon of stone that survived while the material around it eroded away. Geologists estimate that the arch is still slowly thinning, and protective measures are in place to delay its eventual collapse. Visitors are no longer permitted to walk across the top of the arch, but viewing platforms on both sides offer spectacular close-up perspectives.
Hiking Trails and the Falcon Nest
From the point of entry into the area there are several divergent paths and stairs to the observation platforms where you can watch Pravcicka brana or enjoy impressive views of the surrounding nature. On your way to Pravcicka brana you have to pass through the Castle Sokoli Hnizdo (Eagle Nest), built in 1881 on the site of an oak bark hut which served as a bar. Castle Sokoli Hnizdo was originally used to accommodate important guests of the local Clary-und-Aldringen family. Today there is the museum of the national park and a stylish restaurant decorated with original paintings. The Falcon Nest, as it is known in English, houses a restaurant and museum. Entry costs 4 euros. The Gabriel Trail, a 7-kilometre loop through sandstone formations, takes two hours. Edmund Gorge follows the Kamenice River with two boat rides through tunnels carved into the rock. The town of Hrensko, just 3 km away, offers accommodation and hiking start points. Many visitors combine a trip to the arch with a walk through Edmund Gorge, where the sheer cliff walls close in overhead and the only sound is the river echoing through the narrow passage.
Best Time to Visit and Nearby Attractions
The ideal time to visit Pravcicka brana is late spring or early autumn, when the crowds are thinner and the lighting conditions are best for photography. Summer weekends can be extremely busy, with queues forming at the entrance gate by mid-morning. Arriving before 9:00 am ensures a quieter experience and better parking options. The nearby town of Decin, 20 km to the south, has a beautiful chateau and a zigzag road carved into the rock face that leads up to a viewing terrace. The Bohemian Switzerland region is also home to the Bastei Bridge in neighbouring Saxony, a similar sandstone arch formation on the German side of the border that can be reached within an hour by car. For those wanting a full day of exploration, the circular hiking route from Hrensko through Pravcicka brana and Edmund Gorge covers about 14 km and ranks among the finest day hikes in Central Europe.
