Guincho Beach – one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal

July 3, 2011 by europeexplored No Comments

Guincho Beach (Praia do Guincho) is one of Portugal’s most beautiful and dramatic Atlantic beaches — a vast crescent of golden sand on the wild coast near Cascais, where powerful waves and consistent winds have made it a world-renowned destination for surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. Backed by the protected dunes of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and framed by the Serra de Sintra mountains, Guincho offers a raw, untamed beach experience just 30 minutes from Lisbon — a striking contrast to the calm Mediterranean-style coves of the Algarve.

Quick Facts: Guincho Beach, Portugal

  • Best time to visit: May–September for the warmest weather; July–August sees strong northerly winds (the “Nortada”) — ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing; late spring and early autumn for calmer conditions

  • How to get there: ~30 minutes from Lisbon centre by car (A5 to Cascais, then N247 coastal road); bus from Cascais station (40 min from Lisbon Cais do Sodré)
  • Entry fee: Free; paid parking in high season
  • Facilities: Several beach restaurants (including the renowned Restaurante do Guincho), surf schools, and equipment rental

Beyond the Surf

Even if you’re not hitting the waves, Guincho is worth visiting for the spectacular coastal scenery alone. The dramatic backdrop of the Sintra mountains — crowned by the fairytale Pena Palace — rising from the dunes is one of Portugal’s most photographed landscapes. The coastal road from Cascais to Guincho follows a stunning cliff-top route passing the dramatic blowhole of Boca do Inferno (Hell’s Mouth).

For a change of pace, the charming town of Cascais — with its cobbled lanes, seafood restaurants, and elegant 19th-century summer villas — is just 5km away. And the UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape of Sintra, with its palaces, castles, and mystical gardens, is a 20-minute drive into the hills.

If you are looking for the most beautiful beach in Portugal, you should visit Guincho Beach (Praia do Guincho), which is located at the Atlantic coast in the central part of the country, in the province of Estremadura.

Here, on Guincho Beach you can enjoy fine sand, which forms the dunes but also clear water that is ideal for surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. Therefore Guincho Beach is a popular destination for surfers from all around the world. It is regularly a home to Portuguese National Surfing, but also to the World Championships in windsurfing. Near Guincho Beach there are several surf schools and Surfcamp, where you can stay and borrow or get your surf fixed.

The beach also starred in the film – as a part of the movie about James Bond in 1969 (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service).
