The Gran Canaria of the package-holiday brochure, the resorts of Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas, and Puerto Rico, the all-inclusive hotels, the English breakfasts, and the sun loungers arranged in regiments that face the sea, is a tiny fraction of the island. Gran Canaria is a miniature continent: the sand dunes of Maspalomas (400 hectares of Saharan sand, deposited by the trade winds over millennia and now a protected nature reserve, the camels, the palm groves, and the experience of walking barefoot on the sand as the sun sets and the dunes shift colour from gold to copper to red), the pine forests of the interior (the Tamadaba Natural Park, the Canary Island pine, a tree that can survive a forest fire and regrow from the burnt trunk, and the hiking trails that wind through the forest, the views of the Atlantic on both sides of the island), and the mountains of the centre (the Roque Nublo, the Cloud Rock, an 80-metre basalt monolith at 1,813 metres, the sacred mountain of the pre-Hispanic Canarians, the Guanches, who worshipped the rock as a pillar of the sky). Gran Canaria is a family destination that offers more than a pool, and the children will remember the day you climbed the Roque Nublo longer than the day they spent on the waterslide. Here is your guide to family fun in Gran Canaria.

The Maspalomas Dunes: A Desert at the Beach
The dunes are the essential Gran Canaria family experience. A 30-minute camel ride through the dunes costs about €12 per person and provides photographs that are worth the price. The walk to the Faro de Maspalomas lighthouse, built in 1890 at the southern tip of the island, takes 45 minutes along the beach from Playa del Inglés. The chiringuito beach bar at the far end serves the best fresh fish on the south coast. Children can run in the waves, the sand is soft, and the sea is warm at 22°C in winter and 25°C in summer, making it the warmest swimming in Europe outside the Mediterranean. The sky over the dunes at sunset is one of the most beautiful sights in the Canaries. Go in the late afternoon for better light, bearable heat, and shorter queues.
The Interior: Mountains and Pine Forests
Drive inland from Maspalomas on the GC-60, the road that climbs from the coast to the centre of the island in 45 minutes. The temperature drops by 10°C, the landscape changes from desert to pine forest, and the view at every hairpin bend is better than the last. The essential family hike is the Roque Nublo walk from the car park at La Goleta. It takes 30 minutes each way on a well-marked path suitable for children aged six and above. The reward is the view of Mount Teide on Tenerife, the Atlantic on both sides, and the sacred monolith of the Guanches. Go in the morning as cloud builds in the afternoon and the rock can vanish into the mist. Another excellent hike is the Caldera de Bandama, a volcanic crater 1,000 metres wide and 200 metres deep. The walk around the rim is 3.5 km on an easy path, and the view of the crater, farms on the floor, and sea in the distance is a geography lesson and an adventure in one. Stop in the village of Tejeda, the most beautiful village on the island, for bienmesabe, the almond-and-honey dessert that is the essential taste of Gran Canaria. Lunch at Restaurante El Labrador costs about €12 for goat stew, papas arrugadas, and mojo sauce.
Water Parks, Beaches, and Las Palmas
Aqualand Maspalomas is the largest water park on the island, with slides, a wave pool, and a lazy river. Tickets cost about €30 for adults and €20 for children, with discounts for online booking. Palmitos Park offers a botanical garden, dolphin show, butterfly house, and birds of prey exhibition for a full day of family entertainment at €34 for adults and €24 for children. For beaches, Playa de las Canteras in Las Palmas is the best urban beach in the Canaries, with 3 km of golden sand, a natural reef creating a calm lagoon, and excellent snorkelling. It is free, safe for children, and the reef is alive with fish and urchins in clear water. For adventurous families, the wild beach at Playa de Güi Güi on the west coast requires a 2-hour hike each way but rewards with turquoise water and a sense of having earned the swim.
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a city of 380,000 people, and the old town of Vegueta is a UNESCO World heritage site with cobbled streets, colonial houses with wooden balconies, and the 15th-century Cathedral of Santa Ana. The Casa de Colón, where Christopher Columbus stayed in 1492 while his ship was being repaired, costs about €4. The Vegueta on a Sunday morning, with its market, street musicians, and cafes on the Plaza de Santa Ana, is the most pleasant urban experience in the Canaries. Lunch at the Mercado del Puerto costs about €15 for grilled octopus, papas arrugadas, and local wine.

We spent two weeks in Gran Canaria and loved every minute. The contrast between the dunes of Maspalomas and the pine forests in the mountains is incredible. Great variety for such a small island — beaches, hiking, and charming villages all within easy reach. Fantastic family destination.
