Zell am See nestles between the sparkling waters of Lake Zell and the rugged peaks of the Austrian Alps, making it one of the most stunning destinations in Central Europe. The town wraps around the northern shore of the lake, its pedestrianised centre filled with Alpine architecture, boutique shops, and cafes where the aroma of fresh strudel mingles with mountain air. In summer, the lake becomes a playground for swimming, sailing, and cycling along traffic free paths. The Schmittenhohe mountain rises behind the town, offering hiking trails through wildflower meadows in warm months and world class skiing in winter. Zell am See is a beautiful mountain town, located on the western shore of the lake Zeller See. It is a popular resort for summer and winter sports. Its location between the lake and mountain Schmittenhöhe makes it one of the most beautiful places in all of Austria.

Already in 740, Salzburg’s monks founded a settlement at this place called Cella Bisontio, which ensured them prosperity mainly in salt trading. Local people were moving the salt on mules through Hochtor to the south, where they changed it with the wine. Hochtor is a place lying now on the high Alpine road Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, which was completed in 1935 and begins at Bruck, about 4 km from Zell am See. In 1348 the village acquired the right of market town, but the real boom came up with the railway which was built here in 1875. This developed tourism and mountaineering here.

Zell am See is the capital city of the Zell am See district in the Salzburger Land (the Austrian state of Salzburg). It sits at 757 metres altitude with around 9,700 residents. The town is surrounded by massive mountain giants, reaching heights of about 3,000 metres above sea level. This stunning landscape leaves no visitor at rest, certainly not hiking lovers. historic Landmarks and Architecture

The oldest building in Zell am See is the Vogturm tower, built at the end of the 10th century. Also called Kastnerturm after the trader Johann Kastner who purchased it in 1866, the tower now houses a small local history museum, the Heimatmuseum, where visitors can explore exhibits on traditional Alpine life, salt trading, and the development of tourism in the region. A major monument is the parish church of Saint Hippolyte, dating from the 11th century. Rebuilt several times over the centuries, it received its current Baroque interior in 1770. Inside, a Gothic winged altar from the late 15th century depicts scenes from the life of Christ, while fresco fragments from the 13th and 14th centuries survive on the chancel walls. The church tower dominates the town skyline and is visible from almost every vantage point around the lake. The town hall occupies Rosenberg Castle, a late 16th-century residence built by the贵族 von Rosenberg family. Its four corner towers and circular central tower give it an unmistakable silhouette. Nearby, Prielau Castle, originally constructed in the 15th century, operates today as a luxury hotel set in extensive parkland. Both castles offer a glimpse into the aristocratic history of the Salzburg region, and Prielau’s lakeside restaurant serves modern Austrian cuisine with views across the Zeller See.

Mountain Adventures on Schmittenhöhe

The Schmittenhöhe, rising to 1,965 metres directly behind Zell am See, is the town’s backyard mountain and the heart of its outdoor activities. A cable car departs from the town centre and reaches the summit in under ten minutes, passing over Alpine meadows and rocky outcrops. At the top, a panorama terrace reveals the full majesty of the Hohe Tauern range, including Austria’s highest peak, the Grossglockner at 3,798 metres, and the distinctive triangular summit of the Grossvenediger. In summer, the mountain transforms into a hiking paradise with over 70 kilometres of marked trails ranging from easy family walks to challenging ridge hikes. The Pinzgauer Spaziergang is a gentle three-hour loop that circles the summit area with barely any elevation gain, making it accessible to most fitness levels. Mountain restaurants serve hearty Austrian fare such as Käsespätzle, Wiener Schnitzel, and apple strudel on sun-drenched terraces. In winter, the Schmittenhöhe ski area offers 77 kilometres of groomed pistes catering to all abilities, from gentle blues to challenging black runs. Night skiing on the floodlit Familienabfahrt adds a magical dimension to the winter experience, with views of the illuminated town and frozen lake far below.

Lake Zell and the Surrounding Region

Lake Zell itself is the centrepiece of summer activities. The crystal-clear water reaches a pleasant swimming temperature of around 22 degrees Celsius in July and August. A lakeside promenade stretches for several kilometres, perfect for cycling or a leisurely stroll with regular stops at beachside cafes. Boat rentals are available from multiple jetties, offering paddleboats, kayaks, and small motorboats. The Seespitz peninsula at the lake’s southern end features a lido with swimming platforms and grassy areas ideal for picnics. The surrounding region extends the possibilities further. A short drive leads to the Krimml Waterfalls, Europe’s highest at 380 metres, and the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, arguably the most scenic mountain pass in the Alps. The historic city of Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart, lies just 80 kilometres to the north and makes an easy day trip by train.
