Barlangfürdő in Miskolc-Tapolca is one of Europe’s most unique thermal spa experiences — a natural cave bath where you can swim through a labyrinth of illuminated limestone tunnels, carved by thermal waters over millions of years, deep within the Bükk Mountains of northern Hungary. Far from your typical swimming pool, this subterranean aqua-world combines the healing properties of thermal mineral water with the otherworldly atmosphere of swimming through natural cave passages — a genuinely unforgettable wellness experience found nowhere else in Europe.

The Cave Bath Experience

The thermal water that fills the cave is rich in calcium, magnesium, and hydrogen carbonate, known to be beneficial for joint and musculoskeletal conditions. The cave system itself was formed through the dissolution of Triassic limestone by thermal waters rising from deep within the Earth — the same geological process that created the nearby thermal springs of Eger and the cave baths of Egerszalók.

The main pool chamber features a domed ceiling of natural rock, with atmospheric lighting that transforms the cave into an enchanted grotto. From here, narrow passages lead to smaller chambers and a “starry sky” cave where fibre-optic lights mimic a night sky on the ceiling. The experience of floating on warm mineral water while looking up at ancient limestone formations is genuinely extraordinary — no chlorine-smelling municipal pool, this is nature’s own spa.

Additional outdoor pools and a modern wellness centre complement the cave bathing experience, with views across the wooded Bükk hills.

Barlangfürdő is the aquapark in the cave located in Miskolc-Tapolca in the regional centre of north-eastern Hungary. It is well-known for its therapeutic effects since the 16th century and a unique experience to swim, splash, play and walk around in a large cave system, which has water temperatures from 20-36°C with thermal water, and has warm, wet air inside even in the winter. The caves are around 150 meters long but naturally nothing is straight, and it’s all quite dark. The bath also has pools outside the cave. The Cave Bath is surrounded by a large park which has an artificial lake where you can row boats.

The basic adult price is 2500 HUF (approx. 9 Eur in 2010)
